SONY's NEW SXRD 2006

Thread Starter
Word is that the 2nd generation of SXRD rear projection displays will hit the market in July 2006. My source is reliable within the corporate structure.

Early SXRD facts:

JULY 2006

Screen sizes 50,55 and 60" will comprise the new 'A' series. (SXRD light engine)
These displays will have cabinets with the speakers BELOW the screen.
Price point: Unknown

SEPTEMBER 2006

The 70" (non Qualia) SXRD to be released.
This will be the ONLY 'XBR' display this year.
This display will have DETACHABLE side mounted speakers.
Price point: $7K

Winter/Spring 2007
A 55" SXRD will be released with a depth of 12".

Thanks for the info. Think some of this info is scattered throughout the forum somewhere, but great to have it all in one place...

I am sure someone is going to pick it apart, as parts of it are new.

Thanks again...

I'm providing what I was told by a reliable source, so if they pick away at it, so be it.

I also was under the impression that the '2000' series referred to the flat panel 'Bravia' LCD line.

Maybe others have more info to fill in the blanks.

We already have a thread for Sony 2006 SXRD's.

Yup, saw it after I posted the new thread, maybe ADMIN would put this thread together with the older one.
Interesting... so your doesn't say any 60" XBR...

Definitely sounds like this 70 is a variant of the Qualia 006 chassis... I hope they still do the light-up logo, as I always did like that.

What is the difference between A series and XBR, if both are going to be LCos?
Hmm July...
So When would the 2005 model's go on sale??
Nothing about an 80" for next year, or was that just a rumor?

I knew Sony was gonna do it to us on this one...being that this was a prototype at CES I knew we were looking at '07 at best

Apparently the XBR is going to have a higher quality DRC (Digital Reality Creation)
chip and the detachable ears.

The 'A' series is reported to have the SXRD LCos light engine as well.

No 80" SXRD was mentioned by my source, only the 70" XBR.
I'll upgrade for 80. :D
Will the 50" A series be comparable to 2005 50" SXRD since the 2006 a models reportedly will be SXRD's?

It has been a rumor that Sony might chose to use newer and improved sxrd panels in the 2006 xbr line. Do you have any insight into this. Also with lcd and dlp heading to use lasers. Any word of Sony hooking up a couple of lasers with sxrd?

Dare I wish for the 10 bit version of DRC-MF V2? This is the processor in the Sony Ruby FP that beat several dedicated outboard processors in a comparison.

If they put that processor in the XBR, it's a major plus.
I had also heard from a senior sony person that the 2006 SXRD's would carry the Bravia brand too, even though they wern't LCD's. I guess the idea is that SXRD takes over from LCD when the size gets too big for LCD. Doesn't make sense to me, but this confirms what the OP said.

Thanks,
Mike

Ah I forgot about the superior DRC chip. Would certainly help to differentiate XBR from S2000... I wonder what the cost differential between those two chips is...

I am not privy to the details of the advancement in circuitry and parts in the new line of SXRD but will inquire and pass reliable information to you if it is possible.

Yep, I was afraid of that too. I'll wait for it though. I need that depth so it fits better in the room I'll put it in. I hope it's an XBR model.......

Although a bit off topic.........

UPDATE:

The following LETTER CODES refer to Bravia LCD FLAT PANEL displays in anticipation of the soon to be released Bravia 46" LCD panel (non Qualia) at price point of about $3700:

"U" series indicates no ATSC HD Tuner
"S" series indicates HD Tuner on board
"V" series indicates XBR displays capable of 1080p resolution, scheduled to arrive LATE SUMMER 2006.

That is what I understand to be the case.

Does this mean that this new "A" series is replacing the 2005 A10's?

If Sony is smart they will not advertise any performance improvements for as long as possible, as they have nothing to gain and much to loose. Namely existing sales and especially by indirectly admitting that their their present panels leave a lot to be desired. After all, they need to milk their mass rag "Product of the Year" awards before releasing an improved product!

This appears to be true, I don't know if SONY plans to abandon the present 'pass through' LCD 3 chip projection light engine.

Hmm, I was planning on getting a new tv and was lookign at the sony A10 or sammy dlp and the SXRD, but the '05 SXRD was kinda expensive for me. Maybe I will have to wait around now and see how much they charge for the new A series sxrd. Hopefully it will be close to the A10 prices, which would knock it down to my price level. Or at least maybe get an '05 SXRD for a lot cheaper once the '06 ones get released.
Also, anyone have any idea of when Sony will announce the MSRP for these new "A" series SXRD's?

No. There will be a new series of 06 LCD models in 46, 50, and 55" sizes. These look like they will be based on the current A-10 series, but will have 2 HDMI ports instead of 1. Looks like no more 60" LCD sets though. The A-10 is about the best lcd rptv out there, but heretofore topped out at 50" which is just too much smaller than my current KP57HW40 crt set.

The MSRP's will be around 3K for the 50", 4K for the 60", and somewhere in between for the 55". I posted all this in the SXRD speculation thread. If the original poster is factual about the XBR then that's bad news. If you get a 2006 50" SXRD apparently the internal processor is a downgrade from the 50" 2005 SXRD given the fact that this year's 50" is not an XBR. I was under the impression that the only difference between the 2006 A/S/2000 and the XBR's were features, not internals. This sux. Can anyone dispute this? What's next, the A2000's don't do 1080p, only have 1 HDMI, and the remote is optional?
If Sony dropped the 60 in. size on the 2006 XBR line this is a very good sign
that we are in for one hell of a set. There is only an incremental difference
in Sony's cost from a 60 in. to a 70 in. RP set since all of the light engine, optics,
electronics would be identical. So if Sony cannot produce the 60 in. XBR and
sell for a profit a $5499 then that means it is very likely they are going to go all
out on the 2006 70in. Sony XBR.

I cannot wait to see the baby!

I hope and pray that that it will do native 1080p24/48 and 1080p60 by
multisyncing.

This set may turn out to be an SED killer :-) Or least something that will
satisfy us until 80 in. SED becomes a reality...
