Based on the quotes below, If I want to use my computer to update the 4306 and say Oppo 83 (it also uses ethernet), and also play music and send pic's and home movies from my computer to the Denon, I need to run both an Ethernet cable and HDMI cable?

If you are only upgrading the firmware, then you just need to connect with an ethernet cable. The computer will not display on the Panasonic. It will display on whatever monitor it is currently connected to.

If want the computer to display on the Panasonic, then you need a cable to connect from the computer's video output to one of the 4306's HDMI inputs (or you can also connect the computer directly to an input on the Panasonic). This is not required for a firmware upgrade, but it will let you play video clips from your computer on the Panasonic.

You could also use a composite or S-Video connector if that was what was available from the computer. Of course, a HDMI (presumably via DVI->HDMI converter) would provide better quality output.

I am try to use the zone 2 component video output to a secondary display, the problem is most of my devices are HDMI, so the Denon will not down convert the signal to component. The only success i have had is with devices like my DVR which allow me to output both HDMI and Component at the same time.

Questions

1. What is the most effective way to get audio to the zone 2 without amplification?

2. Any splitter/switcher to solve the video problem, do i just ditch the zone 2?

Hi all,

Do you know if there is any way I could accidentally have disabled main zone preout exits? I am playing a 5.1 channel source in the main zone, I can hear all wired speakers, but nothing comes out from the main pre out connectors. However, zone 2 preout works!

I am sure it worked before, at least the SW pre out, since I have a subwoofer connected to it and it worked a month ago. Now, I took the Denon out to reorganize my cables and when I connected everything again the SW doesn't produce any sound either. That's when I tested out the other pre out connections and found out that only zone 2 works.

Should I take my Denon to technical support or can you think of anything I could have accidentally misconfigured?

Thanks!!

Can't see how that might happen, so (speaking from experience) make sure you are really on the 'outs' and not the 'ins'.

Ok I researched a little more, tested the channels through the speaker configuration option, and found out the cause of my mysterious problem:
the main zone pre outs shut down when the corresponding speaker is wired. For example if I disconnect the front left speaker, the front left pre out starts working and so on.

So, I guess the unit is not faulty, it is supposed to work like that. My question for the experts is: how can I have both the speakers connected and the pre out working? Isn't there any way to forward the main zone audio to another amp (the classic "line out" connector)?

You can play music from the computer with an ethernet connection. Any video from the computer requires a video connection, which can be HDMI (or any of the analog video types).
So it sounds like I need to run 2 cables, one Ethernet in order to update the 4306 and Oppo 83 ( I can move this one between the devices to update software), and 1 HDMI which will send both Videp and Music to the receiver

I'm just starting to use the 4306 (latest firmware) with Internet Radio and I notice that once a station has been played the stream remains connected even if you switch to a different source or put the unit into standby I checked no other zone/rec out is connected to that source....

This seems really bad and for users on a capped or billable bandwidth potentially expensive. Do you really have to stop the internet radio source manually and what are the best ways of doing this.... ? I just know we aren't going to remember to do this....

Can I upgraded firmware my Denon 4306 to play .FLAC file?

Sadly, no. It's one of the hand full of reasons I jumped on the 4308 when a good deal came up. The 4308 also happens to play OGG files without mentioning it in the specs

Oh, the GUI is also much better, but still a long way off ideal.

Thas just why i wait for the coming AVR-4310

Also do i thinks that Denon Link 4 will be on that unit.

Will the 4310 finally give me a reason to upgrade, though?

Hey everyone. Im having a problem with the AVR-4306. Every time i try to run the auto EQ calibration and hit start, it just goes back to the main menu. Anyone know what's causing this?

Aren't you suppose to hit the right arrow to start, not start?

That's correct. When I first set up EQ, I actually had to read the manual--the process wasn't very intuitive (much like the rest of the 4306, lol). I've since found that my PS3 also requires right arrow when going through the setup menu for new firmware.

I did get a request for the recovery firmware when the firmware update did fail

So here it is again,

Only use this when firmware update did fail and you brick the AVR-4306

* need a rs-232 cable for the job

after recovery update to the latest firmware 6.0.0.4

Dutchman01 or anyone else:

First off, I only know enough to ask basic (stupid) questions so forgive me in advance...

My 4306 is probably a VERY early unit with antique firmware:

Main: = 00.56
Sub: = 00.36
DSP = 00.02
E IMG = I200510271026
E BL = B200510231011
E CNE = C20051027
E MAC = 005cd-115987

I input Optical Audio from a TiVo HD Dvr and a PS3 into my 4306. I have connected it directly (CAT5) into my Verizon FiOS router. I am running the HDMI directly into my Panasonic plasma monitor. I am thinking about trying to input component video into the 4306 so I can connect a different monitor via a component output too...

I tried to read (and understand) the Denon manual several years ago --- but quickly realized that I was pretty much unable to decipher it. I had previously fancied myself as being able to figure out technical procedures fairly well, but that manual convinced me that I was an incompetent noobie and better off not even trying to figure this complex receiver out.

But, I figure that it is definitely possible to connect and configure this receiver much better than I currently have it? I just don't have a clue how to begin or even how I might benefit. I'm guessing that maybe the 7.1 from the PS3 would be one big improvement???

At any rate, would it be worth bothering with a firmware upgrade for me? What would be improved? It sounds like I could use a XP Pro SP3 system connected directly to the 4306 with a cross-over cable? Maybe I wouldn't even "brick" it? Would I actually benefit from a firmware upgrade?

I have 7.1 home theater speakers connected. Not sure if I am getting full (or for that matter any) 7.1 audio out from the receiver...

Have I convinced everyone just how dumb I am or should I go on? I've probably said enough.

Thanks for ANY help and suggestions...

Hi welcome,

If you did read this topic you did get all the answers

Yes the firmware update's are real improofments

you get in short when upgrade to 6.0.0.2 and after that one the firmware update 6.0.0.4 the follow fixes and update's

* Audessey Update (improofment low freqency)
* Net Audio update (can browse now when you play)
* Net Audio speed update
* Fix for Program true Webgui the Radio preset list
* Memory fixes
* 7.1 over HDMI input

* some minor fixes

So far as i know, everyone is happy with the latest 6.0.0.4 firmware
including my self.

have a nice upgrade
Finally got around to the 6.0.0.4 update.

I actually did the 6.0.0.2 update and then realized that I was already at that firmware on purchase. Fortunately, it didn't mess anything up and was successful.

Then I did the 6.0.0.4 update and that went good, too. Was about twice as long as the earlier update (about 15 minutes total) but now showing:

Main 01.00
SUB 00.50
DSP 00.04

Very pleased to hear my PS3 start up tone and have a Blu-ray in now. Thanks Dutchman.

I have the PS3, Denon 4306, and recently upgraded to 7.1 sound. I read a bunch of posts on the topic and I seem to have it all working now but some of what I did didn't seem to match some of the posts. Could someone please chime in on my two examples below:

For the movie Jumper (DTS HD 5.1 Master Lossless Audio) I went and disabled all Audio Output Settings on the PS3 including DTS 5.1, and all Linear PCM 2, 5, and 7 channel sound. This left Dolby Digital 5.1. This caused the PS3 to send Dolby Digital 5.1 which allowed me to use Dolby Pro Logic IIx Cinema on the Denon and I verified all speakers were being used. Without disabling the output settings the receiver showed Multi Channel 7.1 and only 5 speakers were in use.

For the movie Narnia Prince Caspian (7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio) I went and reenabled all audio setting's on the PS3 and the Denon went to Multi Channel In 7.1 and I verified all speakers were being used.

So the 7.1 seems like definitely the correct choice but I was wondering if I did the DVD HD 5.1 Lossless case correctly i.e. turn off all output modes on the PS3 except Dolby Digital. Is that what I should have done? Is there any sound quality loss going from DTS HD 5.1 to Dolby Digital on the PS3?

I wish I could easily swap back and forth for comparisons but I have to stop the movie and restart it from scratch on each test (minutes go by...).

Thanks a lot in advance for any help

Are you connected via HDMI? Just go back through the audio setup on the PS3, let it detect what it is capable of doing and leave it at that. Since the PS3 decodes internally and sends the signal a LPCM, you should always see Multi Channel In on the Denon display.
I left my PS3 in autodetect and it has done everything fine. On the Denon side, I have PLIIxC enabled for the <7.1 native tracks.

As Kevin noted, you should only see MULTICH IN on your 4306 front display. Never heard of a 4306ci, though...

Yes, there is sound quality loss. DTS HD is a lossless format, and may be 24-bit and up to 192KHz. Dolby Digital is a lossy format, 16-bit, and up to 48KHz. Audio information is lost when converting from DTS HD to DD.

The advantage you gain by downconverting to DD is that the 4306 can apply the Dolby PLIIx processing to generate 7.1 channels from the 5.1 signal.

When the PS3 converts DTS HD into Multichannel PCM (which is a lossless conversion), the 4306 cannot apply Dolby PLIIx to the sound. So 5.1 DTS HD audio can only be played as 5.1 channels.

There is no 4306ci. Perhaps the poster was thinking of the 4308 receiver.

When I initially set up the 7.1 system I was seeing multich in on the 4306 display but I didn't have sound coming from the rear speakers. Checking chmilar's post he basically is stating what I read earlier i.e. the PS3 has to output Dolby 5.1 in order for the Denon to be able to apply PLIIx processing (thus all 7 speakers in use).

Does sound come out of your rear speakers when your watching e.g a DVD with 5.1 DTS sound? If so, how were you able to select PLIIx processing?
Does anyone know how to set up a wma internet radio stream using the Radio Denon feature? What I've done with mp3 streams is 1.)find the radio stream online 2.) play the stream in winamp 3.) using winamp, I can find the URL of the View File OPtions of the stream 4.) I enter that info into the radio denon website 5.) manually update my 4306 radio stations

At that point I have the mp3 stream available to my 4306 without having to boot up my computer. I haven't been able to figure out how to do the same with wma radio audio streams.

Thanks!

That might be true for the XMB (since I never really checked) but I know that I get rear channels in Warhawk and SOCOM since I can hear people creeping behind me sometimes.

I also know I get 5.1 DTS and Dolby Digital but do NOT get 6.1 legacy tracks unless I change from LPCM to Bitstream, which is supposedly a flaw in the PS3 decoding IIRC.

Hi Folks

I was playing with different HDMI signal types out of my Arcam DV-139 tonight (looped thru the denon into my 1080P telly), and now all of a sudden the amp won't pass ANY SD Progressive signal to the telly from the DVD player (i.e 480P or 576P). All I get is a big oddshaped Green or pink box and the telly says the input is "VGA" - huh???
It will pass ANYTHING else, eg 1080i/p, 720, 480i/576i but not that SD prog signal! And it's still upscaling to anything from an analog 480i/576i input, including 480p/576p.

Any ideas??? Have I broken something? Why would it not pass only those signals?
I have the last firmware.

Cheers

Hi Scenaria,

I have been wanting to update the firmware in my 4306, but the link at Rapidshre no longer works, and I'm particularly concerned about having an experience like yours. I have three questions:

1) Where can I get the firware update you installed?
2) Where do I find "Restore Program" you referred to?
3) What are the specs of the RS-232 cable you used? (Strait-thru/Null Modem)

Thanks in advance for your assistance!

Kent Smith

Did some reading and saw that others had a similar problem.. found the restore application, tied in the box via RS232 and ran the restore program.. eveything was updating like a charm then BAM now I have a failure while it was loading the "main".

Now my box might as well be a door stop. its completely dead. cant even power it up anymore.

other than sending it off to denon (of which I would prefer not to) is there any other tips? I have tried resetting it, I have tried pulling the power for extended time with no luck. Its almost like the fuse is blown.. havent checked that though..

im pretty confident the firmware got toasted and simply wont even boot the machine anymore.

I've owned my 4306 for a few years now and just now stumbled on how to receive DSD Direct (displayed) while playing SACD's in stereo and multi channel. The manual does not tell you directly that bass management must be in LFE only to avoid the PCM handshake (DSD->PCM). The problem I'm having is when in stereo DSD Direct, it offers (subwoofer on or off) and displays the subwoofer box on the right hand side of the receivers speaker signal display. However no LFE is sent to my external subs. On the other hand, multi channel DSD Direct sends LFE, Plenty of bass there. Is this just the way it is or could it be my player? I run a 2930 CI via DL3. My front speakers are small paradigm studio 40's so I rely on several external subs for the lower end.

It's been great reading all these forums over the years. I've learned so much.

Thanks for reading and any replies. Mike Bros.

I've been trying to upgrade to the 6.0.0.4 firmware, but the executable upgrade program will not connect to my receiver. I can connect to the receiver's configuration menu using a browser, so the problem seems to be with the executable...
  • My firewall is disabled
  • When prompted, I enter the correct IP address for the receiver
  • the executable does not like that IP address, so
  • I let it search the network for the receiver, which it doesn't find
  • The IP address is assigned by DHCP.
  • I'm connecting through an ethernet switch on the same subnet.
Anyone else had this problem and solved it?
