Thanks for the help.

This is the Best HDTV Forum, I've learned a lot here and still have a ways to go.

Check your local forums, but your cable provider probably isn't recompressing the signals. Most cable companies just pass through what they get from the local station or satellite. Verizon will be getting the same signal. You're probably seeing the result of multicasting that areyou4real explained very well.

Check out some sports on ESPNHD & ESPN2HD and it will probably look better, it's very likely that these channels are being forwarded as is.

If it's local multicasting you're experiencing then all you can do is complain to the local stations, which usually is unsuccessful.

Anyone going to CES?

Anyone have questions about Samsung's plans for 2007?

Post your questions here:

2007 Samsung DLP Information From CES!

Maybe those attending will take our questions for Samsung to CES, and find answers.

EDIT:
Apparently the problem I was thinking of is related to DNiE, but it sounds very similar.

I am having almost the same problem.

My PQ will be WAY off. Very bright and noisy, colors are ugly. Could not get the quick fix working to put me in my calibrated settings.

Last night after +1/-1 clicking nearly EVERY setting in the menu (brightness, contrast, warms, cools, dnie, etc. it finally worked after 5 min.

I am thinking it is not a DNIE problem because there is a difference when I turn it on/off. DNIE does not appear to be stuck on.

Even after I fixed it, when I changed inputs it got screwed up again. Ended up turning off the tv and retrying.

Does anyone know of any other methods or tricks to fix the glitch? Frustrating!

I finally got my TV (6187)on Saturday and spent most of the last 4 days tweaking the TV. I got most things looking great, except for some grainyness still on some stuff. Still trying to figure out what the the big tweaks I shoudl do in the service menu.
Here are some pics.

Thanks

A Big thanks to everyone that helped me out. You can view my gallery for some other pics.

What? No Wii?

Funny you mention that. My wife originally got me a Wii for my bday/xmas on launch day. We played the hell out of it the first weekend, but then never played it again for like 3 weeks. At that point, we discussed what we thought we should do. We determined that it was alot of fun, but the novelty really wore off quickly. It wasnt High-Def, so we played it on the TV upstairs (32" Wega), not our big HDTV in the theater room. We determined we would not be happy with the Wii in a year from now. I had gotten the Wii from Costco, so I could return it for full money back, but I found someone on Craigslist that wanted to trade his sealed 60GB for a Wii and equal cash (so it was Dollar for Dollar). So I trade my used Wii, 2 used games, and extra Wii-Mote and $225 for his sealed 60GB PS3 with receipt. The Wife loves HD as well, and liked the idea of having the PS3 for its long-term life-span and wanted to see Blu-Ray. After playing the Wii, I thought that was the best bet (and I really wanted one anyway). So we got the Wii to go with the 360 and modded Xbox .

I havent looked back, I am sure I will be a little upset when the Mario Galaxy finally comes out, but Long Live High-Def video Gaming

The Bush VS74377
Everyone that has seen it in person has said how great it looks in person. I was very hesitant to go with Silver, but it was on sale for $249 last week, and it was the only stand I saw that was 25" deep, so its got PLENTY of room, which was crucial to me. The glass is very dark tinted with a hint of Blue. I couldnt be happier with the stand. I highly recommend it

That is an awesome stand. I have the all black version which goes great with these sets.

Thanks for all the replies. My wife called CC and "negotiated" with them. She ended up getting a reduced delivery rate for them to come out and swap the TV's. I don't mind paying for gas since we didn't pay them for the initial delivery.
Hopefully I'll get one without any problems this time.

I have had my 6187 for about 2 months and love it. I do notice though that in certain situations it "pixilates", if that's a word, meaning the picture breaks down to boxy segments of poor quality, momentarily. This happens most often on an MTV channel with a concert during a dark sequences with fast motion and especially with flashing lights. On other channels or during HD movies I'm not sure I've ever seen it. I wonder if it's the TV or the source.

See this post http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...&&#post9336929

It's most apparent with fast motion or flashing lights which need more bandwidth than available to encode properly.

An FYI update. I started getting periodic "tiling' or "mosaic" images on my HD channels. Cable Co sent a tech to check it out (one of the senior ones as I have had other problems with my internet).

Bottom line, my signal strength was 'marginal'. He replaced the coax cable ends, one was bad (some corrosion) and signal strength improved. He then installed a "biased splitter" between my HD 5687w and the other SD TV. "Biased splitter" is my term but it routes more of the 'off the pole' signal strength to the HD TV, as the SD TV/TV signal has more tolerance (his words).

He stated that I did not have enough interior splitters to account for the signal loss or to require an internal signal amplifier. That problem usually occurs in more complex (more splitters/longer runs) installations. In my case there are only 2 splitters upstream of the STB.

Then the kicker. According to him each neighborhood has an amplifier on one of the poles that allows the signal strength for each 'run' to be adjusted. However, adjusting the signal on one run affects the other runs' signal strength (i.e boosting one run, lowers the other runs). The signal strength at my pole (my run)was still weaker than it should be and another work-order would be issued to have the neighborhood amplifier that provides my signal checked and "load balanced".

I have no idea if I have described this correctly, but this guy has been the most reliable and informative of the techs I have encountered. He hinted that mine may be the first HD installation in my neighborhood and "HD is growing and we are going to have to fix it sooner or later".

I did not think we were THAT backwoods. After all we all got indoor plumbing!

I am having some weird problems getting anything in OTA with the built on tuner of my HLS5687w. The first few times when I bought the TV back in July everything was perfect. Then I noticed a month or so later(I don't use OTA often) that it almost always needed to be 'milked' to get the OTA signal to come through.

What I mean by milking is I would have to flip through several dead channels getting the 'Weak signal' message on each until I was able to get white static/noise on my tv instead of the text box message. Once I saw the static I could then flip to any of my pre-programmed digital stations just fine with no issues until basically turning tv off and starting over the next day. It almost seemed like by default it wasn't trying hard enough to lock onto a signal until it would get the full on static then it would actually latch on too all my channels just fine. When the OTA was functional had little to no image/sound problems with the picture and usually had a tid over half the bars filled on the signal meter.

Lately though I have been unable to tune any digital channels. I use an Indoor antenna and am wondering did my internal tuner just die or is could this be related to some sort of signal issue or interference? I'm scared to do anything with Samsung only because the TV is calibrated so I wouldn't want them changing out a bunch of parts.

Any thoughts?

I'm new here, so sorry if this is not the right place for this question.

I just got my Sammy, and was checking out HDMI cables at monoprice.

Question: is it acceptable to get 28AWG cable for a 15 foot cable? Or at that length, does one need to go with 24AWG? It's three times the price, but obviously worth it if the other would not do the job reliably.

Thanks.

It's probably acceptable ... but based on how cheap it STILL is at 24AWG, I'd probably go with the thicker run at that length.

Like I said, it might be overkill but I'd still feel better if it was me.

I have DirecTV with some programs broadcast in 5.1 Dolby Digital. I had the DirecTV hooked up to the TV with HDMI and optical digital audio from TV to receiver - but apparently the 5.1 audio is NOT passed through to the receiver.

I had to connect the optical cable directly from the DirecTV box to the receiver to get the 5.1 audio. I have not perceived any audio synch issues with this setup

see if the noise goes away when you unplug it or changes in pitch by pressing a remote button with the tv off. if so, you probably have the same issue.

imo, this noise is present in an unnacceptable number of hl-s dlp sets. i've reached this conclusion after finding numerous accounts of the noise on the web. what's more, the salesperson at cc also commented that multiple hl-s units were returned to their store for this very issue.

others here have commented that the noise stems from a faulty power supply. as i found out, a switched-mode power supply (smps) does make this kind of noise - sometimes inherently, sometimes if faulty. if this set uses a smps, it is almost certain to be the culprit.

more detail can be found at these links:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Switched-mode_power_supply

"A malfunctioning SMPS may generate high-pitched sounds, since they do in fact generate acoustic noise at the oscillator frequency."

http://repairfaq.ece.drexel.edu/sam/...q.htm#smpsstsm

"Most switchmode power supplies when operating normally produce little or no detectable sound. The switching frequencies are usually well above the range of human hearing, but your dog or pet dolphin might be driven nuts!
However, under various fault conditions, and sometimes when lightly loaded, there may be tell-tail audible indications of the SMPS's state of happiness. The cause may be in the SMPS itself or its load."

here is another thread on this at AVS: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=773040

so . . . either samsung is using a crappy design or a lot of these sets have bad power supplies right out of the box.

i haven't decided whether i want to put up with it or not. i may try to exchange it for a third time and see what happens. from what i've read there is also a slight chance that a line conditioner may alleviate the issue.

it's too bad, really. other than the noise, i think it's a great set.

I just got mine today. As soon as I plugged it in, I heard a whine. It seemed to go away when I turned the TV on. I turned it off again and the sound seemed to be gone. Just to make sure I hadn't gotten used to it, I unplugged the set again and didn't hear any difference. Not sure why it would make that noise until you turn it on, but whatever it was, it seems to be gone now.

Always check more than just the price.

P.S. Someone else (in this thread I thinj) once said "Never buy a TV from a camera store."

Does this place charge shipping? Even if they are legit (which sounds doubtful) you might be better off going with Amazon. They are a few hundred more but they have free shipping.

I finally connected my 360 to my 6187..I am happy with the picture...Just like everyone else I noticed it doesn't take up the whole screen. I keep reading about 1 to 1 pixel mapping and overscan. I am happy with the picture the way it is, but if I was to turn off overscan in the service menu would that make the 360 w/VGA take up the whole screen....or is the overscan for something else......if it does make it take up the whole screen is it cropping any of the image off? thx
post #12749 of 21315
Are you sure it's worth saving a couple of hundred bucks?
The chains are selling for about $550 more. Deduct about $300 to $350 or so and now your down to $200 to $250 savings. Now you wait the 2 weeks or so to get the TV and there's a problem or you are simply disappointed. Every site I shopped I pay shipping back, and you have to deal with packing that baby up and get it shipped. At CC I had 30 days to preview the set and if I had a problem or for any reason I didn't like it I can return it, no questions asked, and they pick it up. I got delivery the next day, on Sunday!. When they delivered (free) they unpacked it, set it up, and made sure it worked, and gave me a quick overview. I'll buy a digital camera or a laptop for a 10% savings online but not a 61" beast.
Many have done it without problems but I just could't justify the headache if I had any problems.
