Same here. I tried it the other day and was able to eliminate most, if not all of the pincushion effect. Unfortunately, it didn't last.

Pinecrest brings up a good point about the bowing of the screen. I have to wonder, is there a way to shore this up so that it is flush against the sides? Then again, would it even matter that much?

Ive changed both gammas (excellent change, loved the difference) and played with the iris (mixed reaction - blacks went from really nice to unbelievably inky buuuut I couldn't quite work around a sense of overall 'murkiness' to darker scenes) and have had no trouble making subsequent changes (including setting the iris back to where it was to start).

One thing to watch out for, though - one navigates the various menus with the up and down arrow keys on the remotes. The left and right arrow keys are not used for navigation but will change the highlighted value. It's easy to forget this and make changes without intending (or even realizing).

To make matters trickier, 'factory reset' is a big do-not-touch item and is way too easy to stumble across while looking for other stuff. It appears first on one of the menus (forget which off the top of my head) and an errant keystroke there probably wouldn't be good.

But other than that the changes you want to make are really straightforward and easy to undo if you don't care for the results.

What is Gamma anyway? What am I doing when I set it to zero?
I've noticed a strange thing on the SD SCIFI channel on Comcast. Not only is it smaller horizontally with black bands on both sides being a 4:3 SD channel but in addition it has black bands on top and bottom! I'm forgetting if I see this on any other SD channels. This makes the overall picture quite reduced in size! I'm ending up having to choose ZOOM1 to view it in a decent size and use the whole TV. I then only cut off a tiny bit of the picture on all sides. Does anyone else see this on any channels? Why would SCIFI channel have SD material with bars on top and bottom? Makes no sense. Since almost every other channel looks normal (SD (only black bars on left and right) or HD(with no black bars)) I don't think I have my 6187 setup wrongly or Comcast receiver setup wrong. Either way, I'm very glad that ZOOM1 seems to be a good way out with this weird showing channel.

Technically gamma has to do with both the way the eye responds to light (as things get brighter it takes more and more light for the eye to register the increase) and the way crts worked (as things get brighter it takes higher and higher voltages to get more light out of a display tube).

In practical terms different gamma settings change the way brightness and contrast interact over the entire range from totally dark to totally bright. Have you ever been playing around with brightness and contrast and wished the combination you liked for dark scenes didn't wash out brighter scenes? Gamma (indirectly and in limited fashion) lets you play around with that.

At least that's how I look at it.

Somebody who knows what the hell s/he's talking about might see it differently

Yeah, that's not unheard of. NBC did that with the last season of the West Wing and HBO has shown the Sopranos in both regular 4:3 and letterboxed 4:3 for at least one season, maybe more.

I can't seem to find a manufacturers date but mine does not revert back to on either. My firmware date is 11/02/2006 and I have accidentally pulled the plug, settings still there.

You need to buy a "Dual RCA Jacks to 3.5MM Stereo Plug". It's like $3 bucks.

It could be that the material that SD SCIFI is showing is in the original LetterBox format. That would mean that the black bars top and bottom were coming from the channel and not from your TV.

Most of their material is probably old movie stock. You can read more about the types of aspect ratios used in movies by clicking on the "black bar" link at the bottom of my post.

That's exactly what it is. I've noticed many movies on SCIFI showing in a letterbox format, and a quick change of the aspect ratio on my old Panasonic 47" was often necessary to fix it.

The manufacture date is printed on the label on the back of the TV.

How do you even check the firmware date?

I just got my TV today (its not setup yet beyond building the stand and connecting a dvd player to make sure it worked at all) but its manufacture date is November 2006, so I would be VERY interested in what the manufacture date of yours is.

I won't cry if I can't turn the overscan off, but I'd sure like to be able to just in case I decide that I want to connect my PC via HDMI instead of VGA.

plaque says decemeber 2006, SM is where you check the firmware date, from what I read (see page 448 or so).

It's not old movies though, it seems to be everything on Scifi channel including the very latest Battlestar Galactica series. Letterboxed SD stinks but at least Zoom1 helps tremendously. Leaving it alone makes the picture way too small.

Just about everything SCiFi shows is filmed in HD. But SCi Fi isn't an HD channel so almost everything is in letterbox which is perfect with an HD set. You just hit zoom and it fills the screen.

Samsung HL-S5088W vs s5087w

I want a new HD tomorrow but im not sure whats the difference between these two besides:

The HL-S5088W has some additional features, including a CableCard slot, a TV Guide EPG, two FireWire (IEEE 1394) ports, picture-in-picture, and a slightly improved sound system

Which should I go for? Is there a difference in PQ?

Whats firewire for?

Whats a EPG?

Anyone have a problem turning on their set? Two days in a row my set refuses to turn on without multiple resets. Today it took disconnecting from my APC Smart UPS 15000 to fire the tv on. Set in question is HLS6187. PM for a GREAT price at BB

Where is the date stamped on the HL-S DLP's?

On the outside of the cardboard box is a label w/ model #, etc. and manufacture month.

I got the '88 and am happy with it, but many people don't need it. It all depends on your particular setup. Here's some comments:

Cablecards don't currently give you many features (like DVR functionality) found in HD cable boxes or an HTPC. It may make sense for a flat panel on a wall, but not so much for a DLP. If you will be using a cable box or HTPC that provides PIP, then you may not need it in the TV. Unless you are using an antenna, the TV Guide feature will not work. EPG = Electronic Program Guide, like the TV Guide or a cable company's electronic guide.

If you have or plan to get components with compatible firewire ports then you can use them to control compatible eqiupment through the TV (or vice versa, maybe?).

The sound system on the '88 is still rather poor if you have or plan to get any reasonable set of amplifier with speakers.

If you are hooking up a computer or equivalent device, the 1:1 pixel mapping is another reason to get it. This directly scales the image pixels to the displayed pixels to provide a clearer image.

I bought the TV 3 months ago. Every once in a while, the TV would turn itself off for some reason. When I go to turn it back on, there are two loud buzzing noises and the picture will not come back on for about 20 seconds. Now for the last couple of weeks, it does it EVERY time I turn the TV on. And it will shut off repeatedly......sometimes it will shut off again in like 30 seconds, or about 5 minutes. And evertime I try and turn it back on, there are those 2 loud buzzing noises and a 20 second delay before the picture comes back on. Does anyone know what is going on here?

I have a tech from Tweeter coming out to my house next week to try and fix the problem.

Thanks,
Craig

I have been having this same problem. I called Samsung and they set me up with a service company here in Vegas. Won't get to talk to them until Monday. Was hoping to find some info on what could be the problem. I got my 6188 in December and have love it up 'til now.

Mine has been shutting off after the first 45 minutes to and hour, and with each startup it powers off sooner. Tonight I got fed up after it started shutting down after being on for one minute.

I have done the hard reset thing but that doesn't seem to work. Wish me luck.

I am guessing these shutdown problems could be heat related.
I'd suggest checking to see if there is malfunctioning fan somewhere, such as in the power supply.

Not that all your answers will be here, but the TECH LINKS page has alot of information that is useful for both n00bie and 0ldie alike.

I have a 5687, it's about 2 months old. The pictures great, everything works fine. But an odd thing started to happen today. When I turn on the TV the green lamp light flash (as normal), the picture starts up and looks good, then the green lamp light turns off and stays off.

I know that the lights are used to indicate issues, but in reviewing the owners manual every lamp combination EXCEPT this one is listed. Does anyone know about this?

Now looking @ the Mitsu but i'm worried about the shawdow details on those.

I have both an HLS DLP, and my old standby, a 3rd generation Pioneer 50" plasma which I've had for almost five years. After many a long XBOX session on the plasma, there has been no permanent image burn-in at all. Any residual onscreen graphics are quickly erased after 15 minutes of regular moving TV images. Now that plasmas are in their 9th generations, the likelihood of permanent burn-in is nearly impossible. But, my lawyer said to say "YMMV" and this is "M2CW".

Cheers,
Doc

PS: XBOX 360 in HD on the 61" HLS from 8 feet away is AMAZING!

Your TV is operating normally. My green light is off even as I type this, using my HLS as a 61" computer monitor. I suppose it goes off so as to not be even the slightest bit distracting.

Now if we could just get Samsung to move the IR port to one side or the other, so my center speaker doesn't block it from working!!!

Cheers,
Doc

The HLS "87" and "67" model sets seem to reset when the TV goes to full stanby (fans are turned off).

This week there have been reports that December build HL-Sxx87 sets will now stay OFF.

Check here for more details about "overscan".
