This statement is technically true, but it can lead to the wrong conclusion.
When an input device uses HDMI there is a two way handshake. One of the things sent back to the input device is the type of audio available in the receiving (TV in this case) device. Your TV is a stereo device, so the HDMI input device will send it digital 2.0 audio. So, in effect the TV is passing on the input digital audio as it was received.
That's what you call a "Catch 22".
The digital audio output can handle 5.1 audio and does if you are using the TV's internal tuner.
He stated that my receiver should denote that on a HD channel (even through a satellite connection) I’m getting DD 5.1.
Based on all the previous owner reports for Samsung, Mitsubishi, Sony, and HP that I have read for the past year, the Samsung rep has misunderstood the implications of his first statement, or you have a set with different hardware and firmware than all those who have reported.
What you want to do has been tried by very large numbers of people.
I will check tonight since I’m at work but recall that he's right.
When you do be sure to let us know which A/V Receiver you have, and how you tested the 5.1 pass through.
