That's what is sounds like to me.
The version that you have linked too at Amazon is the Letterbox version.
"Format: Closed-captioned, Collector's Edition, Color, Dolby, Letterboxed
, Widescreen ..."
Did you check the disk or the box it came in. What made you think it was identical to the Amazon version. Was the picture on the box the same?
I think you have the Letterbox version, but what you say about what's on the disk contradicts that. Since the DVD behaves as if it's Letterbox then maybe you are mistaken about it being Anamorphic.
Letterbox Widescreen movies do not have good picture quality. You can read the link about black bars at the bottom of my post for more information. I watch them with the black bars on all four sides.
According to what you say, they may have mislabelled this disc?
If you use Zoom 1 on a Letterbox movie, the image will be enlarged an equal amount in all four directions, and there will be smaller black bars top and bottom. The image won't look as good as playing it with black bars on all sides.
If you use Zoom 2, the image will be enlarged until it fills the screen. Some material will be cropped from the ends of the image, and you will lose more PQ.
Letterbox wide screen movies were made with 4:3 film stock. To get a wide image they just masked the top and bottom of each frame of film, and used the center slice of the negative for each frame to get a 2.35:1 aspect ratio. There is not very much information in such a small negative.
There are two fairly recent releases of "The Thing". One was released in 1998 (The Thing - Collector's Edition (Collector's Edition
)), and it's Widescreen Letterbox
, 2.35:1. It will display the way you describe. Note that the box picture matches the one a Amazon.
The second new transfer to DVD was released in 2004 (The Thing (Collector's Edition) (Special Edition
)), and it's Widescreen Anamorphic
, 2.35:1. This version has a different picture on the box, and it should display the same way your other Anamorphic DVDs display. It may be mislabeled.
If you rented it someone may have put the version you have in the wrong box.
Here is a link to the Internet Movie Database (IMDb) were the different DVD releases of "The Thing" are described. The Thing
If your other Widescreen Anamorphic
, 2.35:1 display correctly then it's not your setup. There is something wrong with the copy of "The Thing" if it's labeled Anamorphic but it plays Letterbox.
Just treat it as a Letterbox version and you will be fine.
