I see rainbows, but the picture quality is so nice I try not to let it bother me. Mainly it's just when there's a white image surrounded by black or dark colors.

Yes, that's Discovery HD paused on a digital cable DVR box, connected via component at 1080i.

BTW, the manual states that the three HL-Sxx87s support 1080p over VGA, HDMI, and component.

I was elated to see they finally updated their remote!!! I know it is stupid, but I think that really completes this TV.....no more days of that boxy old 1980's style remote...

So the faster color wheel doesn't eliminate rainbows? Interesting, Samsung all but guarantees no more color breakup. Oh well, no biggie.

can someone check sound/video lag with an xbox? i know these issues plagued previous samsung sets. thanks

Let me clarify this. I've never owned a DLP set before, or even watched one outside of a store, so I'm not sure what kind of rainbow effects they have had in the past. I am guessing that with a slower color wheel, a white object moving across a black screen might leave a rainbow trail. I don't notice anything like that happening here.

If there is a static white image on a black screen, like text for example, I can see rainbows if I dart my eyes back and forth across the screen in an unnatural way. Basically I only see the rainbows when I'm not focusing on the bright colored object, and it's moving fast, or my eyes are moving.

This is only distracting in a movie or video game if something happens in a scene that causes my eyes to change their focus from one side of the screen to the other in an instant, and there's bright stuff moving around against a dark background. Also, I think the bright whites this TV produces causes some fatigue for my eyes, and makes it easier to see rainbows. I'm going to run through the Avia calibration as soon as I get the DVD back from my friend.

The new color wheel, with five color segments isn't "effectively" fast enough to eliminate the possibility that some will see rainbows.

If you go back and read whatever made you think that Samsung was guaranteing that no one will see rainbows, you probably will find that they didn't say that.

Even when Samsung describes their new color wheel free LED set they don't guarantee anything.

Just a couple of quick questions from a relative newbie to the HD scene. I'm looking into buying my first HD set this summer, and the HLS6188W is a strong contender when it comes out. First, I've read through this entire thread and only got one date, that of May 2nd, for when the 88 series will debut. Is it safe to say that this release date is pretty accurate? I'm talking availability in the BB and Circuit City stores, BTW. Second, I've read a bunch of stuff about wobulation on this forum. I was just wondering if ANY 1080p HD set exists in the market today that is NOT wobulated AND can accept TRUE 1080p inputs (unlike the SXRD). If so, I'd like to know which models they are. I'm generally not making a big deal out of this 'wobulation' business, and have come to the conclusion (after reading countless posts on this forum about it) that having a wobulated set is not bad and no biggie. But if a non-wob set with the 1080p inputs exists today (or will this summer), then why not get it, right? If it doesn't, I'll most likely be picking up the 88 series Samsung this summer! AFAIK, all the HLS model 1080p's from Samsung can take 1080p inputs.

Every single 1080p rear projection DLP from all makers are wobulated at this point. I've seen some rumors that Mits stuff might be non-wob 1080p at the end of the year, but I'm not waiting for that.

I'm waiting for the 5679 LED.

Actually, they're only required to transmit ANALOG over the air stations unencrypted. Digital signals such as ATSC have no such requirement. At least according to the FCC documents I read. I have heard that some cable company's use this "loophole" to not transmit those channels in the free and clear, which I find strange since its costing them money to encrypt them...

Anyway... So from what I understand the 87/88 accept 1080p over both of the HDMI AND the VGA port? I assume the HDMI inputs follow normal (though technically not-HDTV compliant) overscan. Does the VGA input use any overscan?

Also, has anyone noticed any lip-sync issues with normal 1080i/720p input when they run the 5.1 seperately to their preamp/receiver?

Lots of pictures posted already, so i'll just post the one. I'm looking for a good stand that my wife will approve of (something enclosed that will hide the cords). Currently, I have the OPPO OPDV971H, my Xbox 360, and my HD Digital Cable box hooked up. Need to get my Denon receiver, and M&K speakers in here, but I was too anxious to worry about all that this weekend. Most question have been answered, I believe, so here's just a few thoughts.

1. WOW. This tv looks great. I have about 11 ft. of distance, and I'm really glad I went with the 61.
2. Xbox 360 looks great, no lag, no problems I could see. I don't think I've even turned the "game mode" on yet
3. The NEW King Kong looks incredible. The scene where KK fights the TRex's is awesome, no motion problems.
4. I can't seem to figure out how to get my OPPO to upconvert... but, that's a question for another thread.

This set is great. So glad I waited and got this one. A really great set, and a good price, I thought (message me direct if you'd like specifics). Very pleased with the Best Buy service.

The new SXRD models and maybe JVC are expected to accept 1080p inputs.

All 1080p DLP RPTV sets are wobulated at this time. so far the 2006 720p sets are too.

I am building an HTPC to drive this TV. The parts arrive on Wednesday, so I'll post here about how everything looks using the VGA port.

I agree, I bought the Sammy 860 I believe, the new one that CC has for ~100. The picture was horrible. I asked around and everyone said go oppo, sony or toshiba for the divx. I was going to get the Oppo but then I noticed the new sony upconverting 5-disc changer and saw me making less trips to the store to buy the same dvd i bought last week. I am the proud owner of a 3yr old boy and 5yr old girl 5-disks safe at one time was the thought, angels singing in the background was the sound

Picture blows the sammy away. Now to wait for the 5679 to see if it lives up to the hype.

I see, and will these sets be out before, let's say, September at the latest? If not, then I see the 88 series Sammy the way to go! I know this is really obvious, but bear with me: The Sammy 87/88 series both have an HD tuner built in, so I can just pull in OTA HD with a $15 antenna right?

so the new HLS models are not made in the 67" screen size as was the 2005 HLR model? A 65 -67 is a good size for me.

Have any of the owners noticed banding or macroblocking noticed in the 2005s? i'd explain what to look for but im a noob here. any of the veterans wanna chime in?

Does anyone have a picture of the samsung TR-50X3BX matching stand. Is it all black?

How many of you have an Apple Mini Mac hook up to you Sam 1080 sets? And how good is the VGA vs. the HDMI?

Now that I'm an official owner (er - waiter), I can post my problem/question. I have a great center channel (B&W), but it is 12" high, so I would have to take out the center shelf on just about any stand I have been able to find. With the height of the pedistal below the picture, that puts the sound quite a bit below the picture, and doesn't leave room for any other components. The alternative is to use one of those shelves that catches the back of the set. This looks pretty dorky, and probably vibrates so much that it degrades the sound. Suggestions?

After months of study and waiting, I finally took the plunge tonight! YIPPEE!!

My HL-S6187W will be here this Saturday. I went to the local BB where they had the Sammy setup with an HD feed (via component) right next to the Sony 60" SXRD (with the same feed).

IMHO, the Sammy looked much better, especially the whites. There was a hockey game being shown for a while and the SXRD made the ice look yellow/greenish (plus, there was an ever-present green blob in the lower right corner of the SXRD). I also had them bring up an SD (coax input) channel and it was tolerable.

I have a Comcast dual-tuner HD DVR (Motorola box DCT 3412) and I just bought the Sony DVP-NS75H upconverting DVD player. Both of these should feed nicely into my Sammy via 1080i over HDMI (cables ordered from monoprice). I can also try out my PS2 via component. I'm not too interested in the HTPC setup, but maybe I'll play with that some time later.

The BB guy said they had no plans to carry either the 88 series or the 79 (LED lit DLP) -- a surprise to me.

I also ordered the Avia disk to help me tweak the setup. Is there really that much more that an ISF calibration would do for me? (opinions please)

I'll post again this weekend after I get things up and going. Hopefully, I'll be saying "the water's fine... jump on in!".

I thought the 5679 was not wobulated. Are you sure it is wobulated?

what's 'wrong' with wobulation? (other than it makes one sound like they are talking to a 6mo old...)
