Me too. I got my extended warranty in the mail from Samsung. And with me having the screen flicker on me once while plaiting my 360. Something about a ballast. Anyways, I might just do it unless someone says its a bad idea.

My warranty will be up in March as well. I too got the Samsung offer to extend. I still have another year coming from Visa....and I will most likely get an extention beyond that, but there are much more cost effective EW plans than the one Samsung has offered. It is wayyyyy pricey....

I posted this in the Nintendo forum, but I figured I'd give it a shot here as well...

I have my Wii hooked up to a Samsung HL-S5687w via component, so naturally it's set to 480p at all times. However, when I turn off the Wii and change sources (to HDMI or whatever) and then come back to the Wii later on, the image doesn't look as sharp. In order to resolve this, I need to go back into the setup menu, drop down to 480i, and then reselect 480p. Suddenly, the image is sharp again.

Does that make any sense? I'm guessing it's a TV issue rather than a Wii issue, but I'm not sure where to even start on this one.

Thanks.

I've noticed with the HLS-6187 in its 16x9 mode will not show the entire picture on cableTV. Words displayed on the very bottom of the screen will only show the top half of the letters. With my HLT-xx89 there is an option for "Just Scan" which appears to alleviate this problem. However I do not see such a mode with the HLS, at least not in the same portion of the menu. Does anyone know the difference between 16x9 mode and just scan and how to get the entire picture to display on the HLS-6187?

At this point, I'm starting to think that I should have my set replaced. Anyone had any luck with Samsung replacing a product they've tried to repair 4+ times?

I bought HLR6167 when it came out first (July 2005). I have problem with blub - ballast and they fixed it. Later on tv had few white areas on the screen and it was picked up by local repair shop for fix under warranty. They kept tv for almost 6 weeks waiting for the parts. Meanwhile samsung cancelled their contract with that repair shop so they send the tv back -- unrepaired....

I made big fuss about it with samsung customer service... and they agreed to replace the tv... and I got HLS6187 as a replacement...

i'm a recent purchaser of the Sammy BD-P1400 and can't wait to experience blu ray in all its glory and pixels.... I was wondering if anyone has this or similar setup?? Just looking for experiences and performance.. trials and errors..

BD-P1400 -> HDMI-> Denon AVR 2807 -> HDMI -> Sammy HL-S5687W..

any input will be greatly appreciated..

My factory warranty is also about to expire soon too. Samsung sent me the extended warranty information, I think they wanted somewhere in the 700$ range for like a 2-3year extended warranty. But I had already bought the MackTape warranty when I bought the tv for an extended 3 years so I'm good to go. I literally laughed when I saw the price samsung was offering for the extended warranty.

This set continues to WOW me.

A couple of weeks ago I had noticed my set flickering (the brightness). I checked this thread out and saw a few people had the same problem. I called up samsung and they had no problem having a tech come out to check it out. My only complaint with them was that the woman on the phone typed the wrong symptoms into the computer so I had to clear it up with the service company.

When the tech came out he replaced the light engine. A couple of days later the set started shutting itself off and flashing all three leds on the front panel. I called up the company and they said they will just put another new light engine in. They are coming today.

Anyone else have any experience like this? The tv has been flawless since I got it last December until now.

Are there any other warranty options besides the samsung one once you've already had the set for a long time?

Doctor,
i've noticed this on some channels that stretch their image. for instance, i believe TNT HD....i saw a Jeep commercial that cut off some of the letters, as well as a Levi's commercial. when i saw the same commercials on CBS HDor ABC HD, you could see the letters just fine, it wasn't stretched or zoomed at all. and i always view using 16x9. does it happen on all channels? on all inputs?

I have a XBOX 360 connected to my 5687 via component cables. i've noticed during the start up screen, the sphere, the image does not render completely.. it looks like it's missing polygons.. i'm experiencing the same thing during game play... is anyone experiencing the same thing?
My 18 month old HLS-6188 has developed the triangle of darkness in the upper right corner and I suppose has a collapsing light tunnel.
I'm not a buyer of extended warranties (still not terribly sorry) so I'll need to get this fixed on my own.
Anyone have any advice on who I might call to fix it in the Long Island, NY area?
Also, did I read somewhere a while back that there is a list one can add one's name to for a class action suit against Samsung? A search didn't get me anywhere so if anyone has any info or a link, I'd appreciate it.

If it looks anything like the following pics (my old console), the GPU is separating from the board and you need a console repair/replacement. It's speculated to be a precursor to the RRoD, but it could persist for quite some time before it finally declares itself. Even if your results don't look like the following pics, I doubt your problem has anything to do with the TV, but rather the console.

Wow that sux I have never seen something like that on my set. Sometimes when the GPU overheats you do see blue artifacts like that. That happened to me with my Sony HDtv 2 times while playing 360

I think you're exactly right. My xbox did the same thing not too long ago. A couple of days later I got the red rings of death.

This is a DLP thread, it is not about plasmas.
DLPs don't suffer much from glare issues.

1. Noise. (Expect some faint fan noise, but make sure it's acceptable to you.)

2. Bowing. (AKA pincushion. Expect some, but make sure it's acceptable to you)

3. Image tilt. (This is a board alignment problem usually, however, the flimsy bezel may just be out of plumb. If it's the latter, you'll easily fix it by torquing the frame a little. Not an uncommon problem if care is not taken during transport. If it's the former, send it back. Even though a poorly aligned board is relatively easy to fix for a serviceman or adventurous end-user, there's no sense settling for anything less than perfect on a new TV.)

4. Shadows at the borders.

5. Flicker on solid backgrounds.

#'s 1, 2, & 3 if present, will be apparent right out of the box and will not likely change or worsen for the life of the set.

#'s 4 & 5 are deal-breakers if evident on a new set, however if these problems ever surface, they'll more than likely occur after there are several hours on the set.

Anyone have any luck hooking up a Toshiba A3 via HDMI to your Samsung HL-S5687W? All I get is a black screen when playing HD. I sent an email to Samsung and got no reply and Toshiba was not much better with their response.

Thanks

John
As I responded in another thread, I *haven't* had this problem with my A3 and my HL-S6187. Have you tried more than one cable?
Yes I have tried two seperate cables. Did you upgrade the A3 to firmware 1.3?

John
Yeah. I got the player about 2-3 weeks ago and immediately did the firmware upgrade, so I never even tried to hook things pre-upgrade.

I hooked my HL-S5687W to my PC via VGA. It works great. There is one weird problem. When I play a video file in Windows Media Player 10, the TV displays the video with the controls of the media player (Play, FF, Rew, etc.) visible for a split second, and then the tv blinks off and displays the video full screen (and the media player's controls disappear). It seems as if it's an auto setting that senses the resolution of the video file, and automatically displays the video full screen without displaying the media players controls. Which becomes a problem if I need to hit pause, rewind, ff, etc.

Does anyone know how I can have the TV display the video with the controls of the media player visible? I have tried several other media players, and I encounter this issue with all of them.

Any ideas?

What video card? I might be the video card software settings that are doing that. My 2600xt is setup to do something similar between my monitor and hls5687w.
