Frankly there are things that can be wrong with it that may not be apparent with a few minutes of demonstration. With prolonged use (1 to 2 hours), heat could be a factor and you could start experiencing random shutdowns. Other failures can be so random and intermittent that a single demo wouldn't necessarily reveal them. I think that's why you didn't get an immediate response to your inquiry. It's all about the risk you are willing to take.

Otherwise, I'd listen for whining upon start-up and during play. An initial click and hum and even brief high-pitched whir (1 second duration) is acceptable. That's just the ballast firing up the lamp and the subsequent spin-up of the color wheel. The fans will make some noise, but it shouldn't be distracting. That's all I can think of. Good luck.

Thank you so much for the insight. Very much appreciated.

Hey everyone, I have a 2006 HLS6187W with a problem that I cannot seem to find an answer to, so any info is welcome. I was watching the other day and with no warning there was a 'pop' and no picture just random alternating green and reddish pink banding or bars. The tv would not shut off with the remote or the center power button.

Since I could not shut it off, I pulled the plug. I let it sit for awhile, plugged it back in and it turned on, no picture but the light was working. The set would still not shut off. The front led light on the bottom was continuosly blinking red. It seemed to be about 10 or 11 flashes before a short gap int ime and then another 10 or 11 flashes.

I replaced the bulb about 6 months ago, the original bulb had about 12,000 hours on it.

I have since bought a new TV but would hate to get rid of this one if I can fix it relatively cheaply and use it in a spare room or give it away to someone.

Thoughts anyone?

I hear you say the "light was working", but it may not have been adequate enough to display a proper image. Did the prior lamp completely die or did it just get dim? If it just got dim, you may try putting the old lamp back in (assuming you still have it) just to see if your old dim picture is back. Then you know it was just the lamp. The lamp is the only thing I can think of that would cause a "pop". Anything else would likely quickly turn into an expensive guessing game, and that's not worth it for this old of a set. Good luck!

So I replaced the lamp, ballast and color wheel on my HL-S6187, and nothing fixed the loud grinding sound coming from the TV. Any ideas what else could be wrong with it? I already replaced the TV, but if I could fix the issue, I could probably get a little bit of money out of it.

I have weired problem with my SAMSUNG DLP. See if anyone has problem like this. I would like to open TV to see what is going on at the time of violent static sound.

OK I'm not sure my HLS5087W is worth fixing, I love this TV and it has a great picture (or had) so my first question is has any one found a new tv that has as good a picture as this one? Last time I looked all the "new" TV's had overly garish colors and less range in the blacks. It took me 4 months to decide on this one so I might as well start looking now.

Now on to the problem with the TV, first it was a whirling noise, I guessed it was the color wheel but have been putting off fixing it as the second problem I have not found an answer for yet, the volume is really low, where most watched with the volume between 10-20 deepening on the source I now have it at 100 all the time and it's still low. no popping on anything that leads me to suspect a bad speaker it seems like the amplifier has died, but I have not found any test or fix for this issue so I don't have any idea of the cost.

Just this morning it will not turn on at all it tries but no picture and after it makes several attempts to start it goes to 3 blinking lights. so I'm not sure this is worth fixing now, bad ballast is likely so that would be ballast, color wheel, bulb and maybe fans (or the entire light engine) but non of that fixes the sound problem. Any ideas on fixing the sound problem or is the TV finally dead? mad.gif

I just replaced mine with the Panasonic VIERA TC-P60GT50 and couldn't be happier! Beautiful colors and deep blacks. I bought mine at Best Buy, they matched Amazon's price and then two weeks later, BB dropped the price another $200 so I went in and got a price adjustment. Great deal on a great set!

Thanks for the info Inna, I have been armpits deep in work and have not been able to get back to fooling around with the unit or even get back on here to check for responses. Will try putting the old bulb back in tonight and see what happens.

I have a HL-S6187W that has been an awesome TV since 2006. The other day when I turned it on it flashed a couple of times, then had digitized black and white boxes alternating over the screen that was frozen for about 30 seconds. After that the screen is just black. After about 2-3 minutes the TV shut itself off. Now when turning it on the lamp led on the front will blink green for a minute, stay off for a minute, blink green again for a minute and shut itself off again. The screen remains black, no on screen display. After opening up the back, the lamp is still functioning. I inspected the power supply, ballast, and all power connections as well as metered them and all read to the proper levels. I have pulled out the light engine, inspected the DMD board and chip, color wheel, light tunnel, and all seem to be normal with no abnormalities. All the capacitors seem to be fine as well. Then I moved on to the AV input and digital board. The only thing I noticed on the digital board was some slight warping/sagging on the side where the DNIe chip sits. I'm pretty sure it's an issue or malfunction with the digital board but wanted to check here to see if anyone has run into the same problem. I'm not a TV repair expert but am savvy enough to not be afraid to dig into electronics. I really love this TV and if I can repair it on my own fairly cheaply I would rather do that than replace it. Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Here is a picture of the warping on the digital board:

How did you open the TV? Do you direction or any web site for the information where to start and what to watch out for? I wanted to see the what happens when 'violent static noise' starts in my TV. See one of my above post for the link. SAMSUNG wants $130 for in home diagnosis. And parts and labor additional. I am thinking total cost may go higher than the value of this TV. Rather use that money to buy new LED TV. Not SAMSUNG.

Dear Closeups - There are a couple YouTube videos which will show you how to open the TV. Google is your friend, try it out.
I will say after reading back on some of your posts, it appears that you have been playing with this issue since May. 11 out of 13 of your posts have been about this issue. Your final comment cracks me up -

Sorry to hear that. I'd say 99.9% of the people who bought one of these new, have been VERY happy with the longevity and quality of this TV, myself included. Speaking of that, you never did mention if you bought this TV new or if you picked it up used????

edit:
As a matter of a fact, let me make it really easy for you - because I'm that kind of guy, and would really like to see you enjoy your Samsung TV (rather than some other brand).

I typed "open hls6187" in Google, and changed it to search Videos. The top video that came up was this one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cx4pbNjsxfU

Watch the first 1:45 of the video and you will see that you need to take 14 screws off the back to get to the inside of the TV. Do this at your OWN RISK if you turn the TV on with the back cover removed. On top of this, the TV may have a fail-safe switch which actually may not allow the TV to come on with the cover removed. That, unfortunately, I can not help you with.

PS - I don't think $130 is unreasonable for in-home diagnosis. Basically, they have their truck roll charge included in that, and it would probably take the guy an hour minimum to diagnose.

There's a blue switch behind the lamp door. Just tape it in the down position to allow diagnostics with the back removed.

It was a BRAND NEW when I bought this TV. I am sure many of SAMSUNG customers may not agree with my opinion about the quality. But seeing the complain rate, it does seems SAMSUNG is pushing hard to put product in the market even if that sacrifices the quality. You may not have heard the 'White-Spot' Issue but this was one of the major Quality problem with some DLP model. And mine was one of the them. Because of the class-action, SAMSUNG had to fix it free. So, you could be lucky (or people like me are unlucky) this time. Another problem with SAMSUNG support is that you will never get a person who would try to resolve the problem. They all respond with standard response. I have been going back and forth for months until 'Executive-support' team took a look. And that is after I posted problem on YouTube. Then again. Answer was not helpful. Basically, its not worth spending what SAMSUNG suggest to fix this TV. If you had to go through same problem/hassle as I am, probably you would not like to deal with same company that is not cooperative and took months to response. Good luck to you and your Samsung product.

Seeing the complain rate where? On forums and blogs that were built on troubleshooting problems? Get out of town!!! I'm not saying there aren't problems but forums like these often over exaggerate them. If there are 500 owners of a TV and 50 complain it seems like a lot but when you look at overall ownership which could reach hundreds of thousands and sometimes millions its a very small drop in the bucket.

I have a Samsung HLS5687WX DLP TV.

Every source, other than 1080p, is distorted with colored lines.

For example, if my DirecTV box or PS3 is not set to 1080p, the screen displays colored lines and distorts the image. Setting the system to 1080p fixes the image instantly but I'm having trouble setting the DirecTV box to 1080p.

This is true on both of my TV's HDMI ports with two different HDMI cables. This has never happened before.

The attached image shows my TV screen with my PS3's output set to 720p rather than 1080p.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, including permanently forcing my DirecTV box (HR24-200 or HR21-700) to 1080p mode.

Thank you.
