Sounds like you drove a hard bargain and got a great deal. Sounds like a long time wait for shipping though?

They checked several local stores and none of them had any in stock. They said that Samsung was having a massive distribution problem and that the BB distribution center knew when they would get more in. When that happened they would have one of them shipped to my local store for pickup on July 20th.

BB has the 6187 on sale right now. According to the website it's $350 off of MSRP. Do the math. Just in my brief discussions with BB staff, it seems most were willing to do this anyway...regardless of sale. Hopefully not breaking any of the sacred forum rules with this.

All of this of course predicated on actually finding one of these things. In my area (Northern California) the 61" and the Costco 67" are pretty much vaporware. They don't exist. It seems Samsung hasn't quite figured out how to make these things yet.

Makes you wonder what's wrong. These guys are supposed to know how to make TV's...what's the deal.

A question for you owners out there: does the Samsung HL-SXX8XW Game Mode work on 1080i and 1080p resolutions? Someone with an Xbox 360 and a 1080p HL-S could test out the Game Mode in 1080i. I've asked this question over and over in another game-related thread, but no one has answered me conclusively yet:

LOL Chris... Thanks for the inspiration!!!

I saw your post and did the same thing last night with the same results down here in Florida on a HL-S6187W. Plus they threw in $5 BB bucks for every $150 of the purchase price. Not a bad deal at all.

They said the earliest I could get it was the 20th. Unfortunately, I'll be on vacation that week so it will come on the 29th. In looking over the shoulder of the sales guy, it looked like they had 144 units available as of the 20th.

By the way, newbie here to posting, but lurked a long time before making my decision on the Samsung instead of the Sony 60" XBR1.

Thanks to all for the knowledgeable posts that allowed me to purchase my first HD television with confidence...even though it cost more then my first car

I've read thru all the posts on sparkles in the other 1080p Samsung thread especially the posts by oldguy813. From what I understand he finally concluded the source material was the cause and had no issues with quality OTA broadcasts. This concerns me as my 5687W has sparkle with any material. I have the sharpness at 0 and contrast and brightness in the 40s and 50s, respectively but it's still not helping. I've even tried a Monster power conditioner to help reduce it.

The worst viewing comes from bright scenes on some of the "lesser" quality HD channels from Dish Network (input via HDMI). This programming is very hard to watch. All the Dish HD channels have noticable sparkle during bright scenes but the issue is less noticable on channels like HDNET and HGTV.

The Xbox 360 (set to 720p w/ Game Mode on component input) and Oppo DVD player (1080i with DVI-HDMI input) are falling somewhere in the middle of my sparkle concerns. The startup screen on the Oblivion game is horribly ridden with this problem but in-game it's only noticable during closeup lighting effects. DVD playback of course depends on the DVD disc but even great quality movies like Star Wars III have the sparkle at some point.

High signal strength OTA broadcasts are the least likely to have noticeable sparkle but bright scenes still are bothersome.

With some folks not seeing any sparkle and other folks seeing it only with certain sources, are mine abnormal?

thanx

I use my xbox 360 set to 1080i fed over component to a HLS5687 on Game Mode. It works great. Excellent picture and absolutely no lag or audio sync issues as far as I can tell. I only have three games, Call of Duty, PGR, and College Hoops, but these three look and work exceptionally well. I had heard that you should set the xbox to the highest resolution that your tv supports, so I set it to 1080i and let the tv upscale to 1080p.

Thanks again Tarheel72 (my previous thank you somehow got deleted when the AVS forum database was updated).

The one thing I wish this set had was more viewing options. On my Fathers sharp aquos he can stretch just the very sides of a 4:3 picture and maintain the aspect of the middle. I noticed, especially on the yes network that I can never get the picture just right, I need to zoom in and move the picture but I lose some of the score box.

But why bother with the stretch at all? Doing the native 4:3 display is the least distorting way to use the screen, anyway. On a CRT projector, you're supposed to use stretch modes (or irritating gray bars) to avoid burn-in, but on a DLP, you might as well just do the regular 4:3.

Chris.

While I was tempted to do this, I'm glad I waited. I got the call from TVA today for my 6187. Delivery will likely be in the range of the 13th to 17th due to the 4 day holiday weekend but possibly earlier. I was originally 31 on the list and was down to 17 about a week ago, so TVA is definitely getting some of these in. For those of you tracking your progress I ordered 4/26. Long wait, but this appears to be an issue with Samsung distribution and not TVA. Hopefully for those of you farther up the list it will start shrinking pretty quickly now.
I cancelled my order with TVA so all of you waiters should move up a notch. Now, that I have my television on the way from BB, I've got to consider a stand. I'm interested in opinions of what you guys like for a stand for the HL-S6187W.

Does anyone know how to reduce the "short, fat people" effect? It's not that bad but it kind of distracts from my viewing pleasure...

I prefer viewing in 4:3 to seeing "short, fat people", but I'm open to other possibilities as well.

Anyone know when the HLSxx88W's will be up for sale in Best Buy Magnolia's?
I was showing my set to a few people yesterday and after pressing the power button on the TV itself, i then tried using the remote to adjust the volume and other settings. Nothing on the remote worked.
The LED on the TV would blink when i pressed a button on the remote but nothing would happen. The buttons on the TV itself wouldn't work either.
Not sure what made me think to check the Power button on the TV, but it was stuck in causing the problem.
Just thought id post this in case someone else runs into this. I have turned the TV on and off a few times since using the Power button on the TV and it seems to work fine. Must have just pressed it the right way to get it to stick.

If this has been confirmed already, sorry for the double post of information. Its just that I stopped reading at page 83

But if anyone was wondering, I used to have to output 1776x1000i from my ati x1600, but after a complete reinstallation of Media Center, I installed the new Ati Catalyst 6.6 drivers and got 1080p to work perfectly using DVI->hdmi to my 5087.

I usulally like to use the advanced settings to get everything up and running, but the Catalyst Control Center now launches initially with the choice to use a Basic automatic setup of the video card. I tried it, and in the flicker of the screen, it accomplished a perfect 1080p picture that I have been trying to obtain for the last 3 weeks.

So, FWIW, this is just my conformation that you can get perfect 1080p output/input and that it is as easy as letting Ati set up your signal.

Now, back to the Tour de France

Excellent! Thank you for this info.

When I get my TV (hopefully they start showing up at stores again soon) I will be attempting the same... Only difference is I am not running Media Center...just XP with Meedio, Sage, TheaterTek, etc. So I will probably be using Powerstrip.

Although my video card is a Radeon 9600 (non-Pro) so I bet I could just use the same driver as you....

I bought a Bell'O 2672, which measures 63"W if I recall. Beautiful stand, if a little more expensive.

I have a Bell'O for my old HLN, and it is nice. But the glass shelves (except for the top one) can only handle 50 lbs. As my receiver is 48 lbs, it's the only thing on the bottom. If you have a lot of components you're trying to fit, check their weight first (newer Bell'O's might have more capacity, too).

When this thread first started I thought there was a link on the first page to download what I can best describe as a topview of all the HLS tvs with sizing dimensions. I am looking for a topview with dimensions for the HLS5687W as I have a built in entertainment area. I have looked at the Samsung site and cannot find this. If anyone knows where this is and can direct me there I would be very appreciative. I am curious is the dimensions have changed from the link I downloaded a few months ago. I did create a template originally and it seems to fit but not by much.

I love that terminology = "Short Fat People Effect" (SFPE) has officially been coined (maybe it was coined earlier, but this is the first I've heard of it).

It never ceases to amaze me that people will spend thousands of dollars on HD displays, and then allow the SFPE to be displayed. Isn't the goal of HDTV to have a more realistic display (not a warped one)?

As you're in Colorado, I'll mention that I went to American Furniture Warehouse and got this stand, which has 3 shelves and lots of storage space in it. Good pricing (turns out it's flat-packed so I still need to put it together) but it should be exactly the right combination of practicality: Lots of storage shelving and durability, no glass.
I didn't think the link to which you are referring was in the first post, but regardless I can't it. Here is a link to it's dimensions, but they are in metric.

http://www.tvauthority.com/pdf/HLS56...dimensions.pdf

The fellow who posted the link originally had converted some of these dimensions to inches, so I can tell you that:

Top View
129.1 cm = 50.82"
78.0 cm = 39.71"
85.0 cm = 33.46" (base width)
35.5 cm = 13.98"

Side View
400.5 cm = 15.77" (depth)
4.55 cm = 1.79"
183.5 cm =7.22"
11.5 cm = 0.45"
415 cm = 16.34" (depth including base)
325 cm = 12.8"
375 cm = 14.76"

Front View
129.1 cm = 50.87" (width)
124.4 cm =48.98"
90.7 cm = 35.71" (Height)
100.4 cm = 39.53"

If you need to convert more dimensions you can do so with this metric converter.

Hope this helps.

after waiting more than 2 months for my tv from TVA, and with very little information from them, last week I gave up on TVA and went to HHG and they more than matched the PB price. Last night TVA called ready to ship my HLS6187w. I'm sorry TVA , you took to long and you didn't put out enough information as to when I would get this TV.
Placed the order for my HLS5687W. The place I ordered from was out of stock, but the price was amazing. So I have about a 2 week wait until mine will ship. So I have two weeks to figure out what to put it on and to pick out a new DVD player...

Before a lot of research, including reading this entire thread, I assumed my next DVD player would be the Oppo 971.. However, it seems like many people on this thread have issues with the Oppo and the Samsung and macroblocking. Do others on this thread have a good experience with the Oppo/Samsung DLP combination? I know UMR has that combo so it can't be terrible. I see some people recommending the Sony. For people who have sen both is the Sony noticeably better? I am not a big fan of Sony, so I would rather go with Oppo unless the difference is noticeable.

Thanks!

I had this same thing happen today. The remote was working, but wouldn't control the tv. I did turn the set off and then back on. The remote then started working. I didn't notice the power button stuck in though. It could have been.
