This will allow my surround sound speakers (R&L Front) to be placed on the floor underneath the "overhang" of the screen.

Any comments on the plausibility/safety of doing this would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance... nice forum!

No problem, for me anyway. I would just like to correct one misconception, though. The base of my 5687 is 39.5 inches wide, not 33 inches wide. The stand on which is sits is 40.5 inches wide.

With the set turned on, hit: Mute-1-8-5-Exit, this will pop up a menu with all the TV information on it. The firmware version and release date are in the first column on the left, about the forth block down. Just hit Exit again to close the menu screen.

Is that the service menu?
Will entering that reset your settings?

Exactly why I didn't buy mine off the Internet. The thing is. I've looked in some of the other forums and this seems to be an industry-wide problem. There are a lot of manufacturers putting out TVs with defects that are getting exchanged. What has happened to Quality Control. I think Sony, Samsung, Mitsubishi, etc., know that most consumers aren't very TV or product savvy, and won't notice minor flaws. Many people on here do...and recognize that you should get what you pay for. I'm on my second 5688 (the first one had a bad coating on the screen) and for now I haven't had any issues. I even checked for how bad the smudges were using Day After Tomorrow (ice scene) and some white commercial the other night, and didn't see any. I have the 5-year warranty though, which gives me piece of mind to enjoy my TV. I've even been tempted to exchange it to try out the 5679 (my Tweeter said they'd let me, even now that my 30 days is up) but I don't think it is worth an extra $1000. I like my 5688 and have received many compliments. Also, I get a bulb replacement as part of my Tweeter warranty, so that gets me 6 - 8 years of use (assuming the existing bulb dies before the warranty is up). Also, the 5679 cabinet is ugly. It looks cheap, and I think "Zenith" for some reason when I see it. I like the 5687/88 design. I'll keep my eye on the LED's picture quality though, for a purchase in the far future

I have had my HL-S5687W for about a month. No problems until now. The picture is very clear but it's gets darker then lighter than darker then lighter and it keeps on doing it for about an hour then it stops. I have an HDMI cable connected from the TV to the HD-receiver. I also have componet cables connected fom my DVR to the TV and it is happeing on both receivers. So I am sure it is not the cables. Has anyboby experienced this? Does anybody have any idea's. I have also called Samsung and they will send a tech out to look at it but that might take a few days. Any help would be great. Thanks...
Could it be a defect in the bulb? Does it do it when you watch TV and DVDs, or just one?
It does it with both. Two different receivers also. Very strange but it does stop after about an hour, then it works fine.

I'm in the market for a new TV and the samsung 1080p sets have caught my eye. They are pricey but seem to be worth it from what I seen. However I cant decide between the 56" or the 61" model. Is there that much of a difference in screen size to warrent the extra money? (Keeping in mind that still need to buy a stand/warrenty)

I sit about 8 to 9 feet back from the TV so I'm not sure if the 61" version is all that practical or worth the price difference between the 56"? Has anyone got any comparison pictures or any advice on which one to go with?

Well it would have to be shipped back whether it was local or not (unless you picked up your set yourself).
When I thought I had a problem, Crutchfield (from 4 states away) was ready to pick it up at their expense no problem.
Whether you buy locally or from the internet, it is a must to buy from a reputable dealer.

Samsung DLPs are considered inexpensive (by some) for 1080P sets.

I sit 9' back from my 61" set and my family likes the immersive feel.
Only you can decide how immersive you want to be vs how much you spend as well as whether you don't mind the set dominating the room.
One of the best things you can do is take a tape measure to a showroom and measure out 9' from a 56" set and a 61" set and spend some time. I did that repeatedly over a period of time and took the wife once.

I am in total video bliss right now watching the FSN HD presentation of the Houston Astros versus the Diamond Backs in Arizona. I have been waiting since June to see a game on this channel since TWC only broadcast a select number of games. Man oh man is it sweet I feel like I could reach out and touch these guys when they do the close ups and that is with 720p coming through my SA 8300HD connected via HDMI.

Anyways, just wanted to say I am totally enjoying my 6187w that I got back in June through TVA. My set was manufactured in May of 2006. I have not experienced any of the problems mentioned in this thread so far and hope I don't have to call Samsung any time soon.

These are my settings:
Movie mode, DNR on
10
45
0
35
50/50
warm2

I am so upset! My 6187 was dropped off today while I was at work. I get home to turn it on and a noise that sounds like metal grinding on metal is emitting from the box where the lamp is housed. I called the tech and she could not believe the noise it was making. I had to schedule a service appointment.

Thank you for the correction! I have had a hard time keeping my numbers straight today.

With your working setup as an example I feel I am on much more solid ground (printed off the picture as an example). With a 39.5 inch base on a 40.5 inch stand I am just squeaking by. Hmmm.. If I move that chair a little more and that corner hutch with the china I might be able to get a 6187 in..... nope... the boss would kill me, best quit while I'm ahead.

Somebody help me out here.

Is there a Panorama stretch mode on these new HLS sets? My old HLM/HLN model has Panorama stretch that makes 4:3 material the correct AR in the center with progressive stretch toward the edges.

My Dad purchased a 5687 on my rec and now he only gets black bars or everyones "short and fat".

I'm looking at the manual from Samsung's website and it doesn't list a progressive stretch mode. Can this be true????!!!!

My Dad is pure J6P when it comes to TV and neither option is ok at all.

Tell me there's a Panorama mode in there somewhere.

Thanks,
Ken

Thanks! I've read the whole thread, but still didn't see too much info regarding entering the SM for the 88 series (I only saw it for the 87 series, maybe its the same). Thanks for the link.

No. It is not the service menu and no, it will not reset your settings. It is a "view only" screen. You can't make any changes there.

I have posted on this thread and on the JVC Pro thread requesting if anyone has done a compare. Some have commented on parts of my posts (very fiew) and NONE have answered my questions. I am interested in a 70" set.

The theory espoused here seems plausible to me. I'd call Samsung about it.

There's several options on the remote (at least on the 5088). Press the "P.Mode" button. It cycles through different screen types. None of them are called Panorama Stretch though.

Also, if you have DirecTV and one of the newer receivers make sure it isn't on "Native" in the DirecTV setup menu. Setting to "Native" seemed to have an impact on the "P.Mode" function on mine (i.e. less useful).

If the xx87 series is completely different from the xx88 series I apologize in advance.

The controls are pretty much the same... just a few hardware differences between the two. Tips and tweaks for one pretty much work for the other (with just some minor differences such as overscan sticking, etc).

Just last night I was watching my 6187 from about 8-9' back on the couch, and thinking again how glad I was that I went with the 61" set. It's big, and the size creates a level of awe and immersion I never thought I'd get in my living room.

It's an individual preference, but I for one find the 61" set works from that distance.

Whoops...I wasn't sure what screen he was talking about. I just looked back a few posts and saw that I think he was just referring to the TV information screen. When I went into the actual service menu and made one change, and then went back out. All of my user settings were put back to the default ones for all inputs. I had to reenter all my contrast, brightness, sharpness, etc. values.

Guys, I have a question. I ordered a DVE disc from Amazon about a week ago and received it on the mail yesterday. I was looking at the back of the packaging and it states that there are 3 versions of DVE ( I think not counting DVE PRO) - DVE for PAL, NTSC COMPONENT AND HDTV. The version I got from Amazon is NTSC COMPONENT.

Did I get the right version for use on the 6187? I looked at Amazon and they only have two versions listed - NTSC COMPONENT and PAL.

Just curious if anyone else uses a backlight like the "IdeaLume" behind their sets? In my smallish room, the 5687W puts out such a bright picture that I find myself getting eye fatigue when the room is really dark.
