thanks for your help

Auto DVI should do the trick.... That should 'pass thru' what you are sent without any scalings.

If you tune ABCHD, FoxHD or ESPNHD you should see 720p. NBC, CBS, INHD, HDNET should be 1080i.

It always stays at 1080i no matter which station I am on (HD or nonHD). When I press info on the Samsung remote, it always says 1080i

On your cable box you probably have the output format on 1080i only. On my pioneer voyager HD box I found that checking 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i, gives me the best results in both SD and HD channels.

Well it looks like most of the manufacturers have some issues. It looks like the new Sony's still have green blob issues...or at least some reports of the A2000s with them are showing up. I wonder how Mitsubishi and JVC will do with their new sets.

anyone see or know much about the samsung 40'' and 46'' flat 1080p lcds? how do they compare to the 1080p dlps
post #7116 of 21315
During a brief freak over SSE, i was looking at the LCD sets. They looked great, but were definitley not as bright as my 5088. I couldnt justify the huge $ increase to go smaller/dimmer.
PQ, i didnt see any other differences.

With STB off press and hold guide and info at the same time on the box. A program will start to walk you through which resolutions you'd like the STB to output.

Guys, I'm not going to knock sony or cnet, and I'm sure not going to knock samsung.

However, why, when you read cnet's reviews for the a2000 and xx87 it seems really like the two are very comparable, or even that the xx87 is better, until you get to the score (80 and 76 respectively)?

I'm sorry if I am splitting hairs. The flaws the reviewers brought up as you read through the reviews of the a2000 seemed a little more important (disappointing VGA, color drop off / or inaccurate primary colors) as opposed to the xx87 (RBE, if you can see it, cannot resolve every line of 1080p).

Even AVS Forum's review between the 2 seemed to bring up certain issues, but still leaned more towards the Sony.

At this point in time, as I wait for my 6187 which, I hope, should come this Friday my main concerns are, based a little bit on the reviews are: pixelation during fast moving sports and refresh rate in general or gaming lag. Issues the Sony seems to resolve a little better. Additionally the price is coming down on these TVs.

However, Everything else seems to be better on the xx87s and gives you more bang for the buck AND, lately, I've had problems trusting Sony.

Sorry, just throwing it out there if anyone has any comments.

I cannot say enough that after comapring the two, the Samsung is just way more likelike. THe sony looked very flat to me. I don't have alot off faith in Sony's SXRD technology. As far as pixelation....I think that is going to be far more dependent on your source. On bad HD football feeds, I see lots of it. But on good feeds I don't see any at all. So, that's not the Tv.

You should feel good about choosing the Samsung
post #7120 of 21315
Buckfly - There is absolutely no gaming lag whatsoever. (I have a x87) I play FPS games too. I never see pixelation on HDNET INHD, HBOHD, however I do occacionally see pixelation (albeit very minimal and only for a split second) on ESPNHD but from, comments here and other research this seems to be the fault of the cable company and not the samsung - meaning this pixelization would probably be evident on the sony as well.

Hope I helped!

rRooster, NFLFAN05,

I hear ya both, but why does there seem to be an almost, romanticism, with these reviewers when it comes to Sony concerning the bottom line when you don't really read it in their reviews?

Oh, sorry, while I'm at it, does anyone know of a reputable calibration professional somewhat near the WNY (Buffalo, Rochester) area?

I just thought I'd take a shot. I know Eliab, Umr and Dave probably would not be able to make it out to these parts for some time.

Thanks in advance.

PS - I'm doing it again, sorry, but is the 24 gauge, 3' HDMI cable from monoprice.com the cable of choice or are there other recommendations. Thank you.

If anyone has the harmony 520 remote and has figured out how to get into the service menu, can you PM me. Thanks --CN

i have a 5688 on its way. Should be here any day. I have standard digital cable now. I know it depends on the service in the area with cable but i am considering a change to satellite HD or may go cable HD. I am curious to know how you guys who have been in this for a while feel about satellite over cable? Also, is direct tv and dish basically the same in HD quality?

If it turns out that you're overheating (I doubt you will) you should be able to exchange it for the 50" as long as you buy from a reputable dealer.

Hope you're watching happily soon!

There is no reason to spend money for anything more then these cables At 3', even the 28 gauge is fine (no sparklies, no artifacts) and I see no difference between it and the 24 gauge. Buy with confidence.

Well after reading throuh a lot of these posts (wow big thread) I'm really considering the HL-S5687W

I have a couple of questions though. I realize the answer may be deep down in the 200+ pages here but I just thought I could get some quick/current answers from some of you.

1. How long does the bulb last in this unit and is it expensive to replace?
2. Considering ordering from Amazon due to the very nice price plus free shipping.......does anyone have experience ordering from Amazon?
3. Extended warranty...should I purchase one that covers bulb life?
4. 56" is a big tv....we will be sitting aprox 9 to 9.5' from it. Will it be ok at that distance?
5. For now I will be using a progressive scan DVD player using component connections....will it look ok on this set? Or, should I get an upscaling player for now? (Waiting on HD-DVD)

Oh yeah...I will be replacing a Toshiba 50H82. Its about 4 years old now......how much of an improvement for DVD watching will the samsung be?

Any help is much appreciated!

Thank you for the quick response, Screamin.

I'm ordering right after I type this post. I'm almost as excited about my set-up issues (stands, cable) as I am for getting my TV.

It's like Christmas when I was a kid, except without the gray hair and balding!

Buckfly, it just might be advisable to wait for a known, respected calibrator. When I got my first Samsung HLN in 2003, I had a local ISF calibrator calibrate my set. He didn't do a very good job. Being ISF certified doesn't necessarily mean the calibrator knows his stuff. If you choose to go with a local guy, do your homework and, if possible, get recommendations.

I now have Gregg Loewen of LionAV do my calibration. I've had my 5687 since July, and Gregg won't be here until late October/early November. IMHO, it's worth the wait. In fact, your area is part of his Northeast U.S. tour which includes my calibration. Should you be interested, you might contact him to see if you could be included.

With guys like Gregg, Eliab, UMR, Dave, or any of their associates, you can rest assured you'll be getting a good calibration.

Regarding the HDMI cables: There are, of course, other well made cable recommendations. I have several Monoprice 28 gauge, 3' HDMI cables, and one 24 gauge, 15' Monoprice cable. I also have a 24 gauge, 12' HDMI cable from Blue Jeans Cable. All perform flawlessly. Blue Jeans' HDMI cables cost, proportionately, a bit more, but they offer a wider variety of lengths, which I found convenient for my needs.

Just wanted to hear from existing customers and experts if it is worth buying the warranty on this piece. The sad part of buying it from Amazon is that their warranty doesnt cover the bulb replacement. Is it still worth? I think the price is like $299 for 2 yrs and $499 for 4 yrs. Do you know if I can purchase the warranty from someone else?

Thanks,
MG.

Buy with your Visa and they cover your second year.

Hiya Cooper. I also just got a 5687 and I'm sitting the same distance. It looks fine once you get the out of the box blowtorch mode dialed down. I'm using settings of contrast of 40, and brightness at 30.

I bought a Sony NH75 DVD player and Star Wars Attack of the Clones looked great to me.

I am also looking to get an extended warranty. Anybody with some suggestions would be appreciated.

I have a tech coming out later this month to take care of mine (my MINOR smudges that he's probably going to give me the evil eye for making him fix ... hehe), just trying to get an idea of what people have been seeing.

Thanks!

I can comment on this. I saw the smudges on my set (really brought to life during a calibration by Eliab). Called them up and the tech showed up 3 weeks later with the replacement screens. Here's the amazing thing. Both screens were replaced and THE SMUDGES STILL REMAIN. Absolutely baffled by this as both Eliab & I were convinced we were seeing smudges. The tech is now going to put in a request to replace the light engine. We'll see how that goes next. The way I did it was to bring up a test pattern that clearly showed the smudges prior the replacement. Once the tech put the screens on, I then brought up the same test pattern that clearly showed no difference post-screen replacement.

Thank you very much Rijax.

However, and this is for anyone else out there, will I see the potential of my TV doing my own calibration during my first 30 days (given my return policy)?

Thank you.

Well im returning my HLS-5687W due to rainbows which is driving me nuts. I bought my set from TVA and my problem is that now I have to pay for shipping to return it. Tried to get a quote from UPS and DHL and they said the pacakge was too big. So now im stuck, what would be the cheapest way to get this tv back to them? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hoof, wasn't it Mach1 that delivered the TV?

If so, just ask them. Good luck and please let us know how you made iout, considering that some of us might be in the same boat.

Thank you.

Yeah, that should do it.

Worth noting however that when I enabled all the resolutions on my SA 8300HD my HD channels looked much worse than only enabling 1080i.

Anyone else with any reports on which way looks better for them using this TV? Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

My buddy just ordered the 40" 1080p LCD. It should be here next week. I'll check his out then...still "bigger is better." I won't go smaller than 56" ever again...haha.

I have just enabled 720P and 1080i. So far I haven't really seen any difference between the two. I haven't enabled any of the other resolutions yet.

No doubt, htwaits, I cut and pasted it awhile ago.

I have files in Word just dedicated to informative posts people have put on this thread going back some time. I thought it would be easier than doing searches which don't seem to get me anywhere.

Additionally, (and seriously) "htwaits on aspect settings" is one of those saves.
