Help! Need system for around $1500

Nick,

Lots of pretty decent equipment can be had for $1500;

AV receivers : Onkyo TXDS575X $499
Harmon Kardon $599

DVD : Toshiba DVD 1200 @ $199

Speaker Systems : Atlantic Technology System T70 @ $999
Polk Audio RM6200 @ $900

These are just a few examples of some good combinations. These are MSRP so you will find them cheaper at stores and online.

If you look around on the net you can get an atlantic technology system 170 for about $1050-1150, then add one of the new Kenwood receivers (vr410??) that received (no pun intended) rave reviews in stereophile guide to home theater, and for about your price range you have one VERY BUTTKICKING digital surround system.

P.S. I have the System 170 and it is incredible for the price, particularly the subwoofer.

It's great to have all this great gear. But I'd instead put all that money into software (Movies) I'd have SOMETHING TO WATCH ON ALL THIS GREAT GEAR. Doh!

OK, that sounds fine, but he would still need a DVD player.
Is the Kenwood VR-410 worth $500? The VR-409 goes for $400, and all that it is missing is 5 pre amp outputs (remember he is not a home theater nut like the rest of us), and it uses a regular remote, where the VR-410 uses an R/F remote. Then there is the VR-407 which is $300, and it doesn't have any optical digital outputs(I don't think he would ever get to that level), but has an extra SVideo output (probably wouldn't get used by him either).

Any tips as to where to get the Atalntic 170? I see the T70 all over, but I know that the 170 is like a big brother to the $800-$900 T70.

Thanks.

You guys are forgetting cables.

I'm thinking of the Sony 845ES recvr. and 560(?) DVD, polk speakers, couple of monsters, and a Home depot spool of 16ga.
Best guess....$1,250.00. jdb

A guy that I work with is looking into getting a digital surround system for his living room. This is not for a dedicated theater, but more to enhance the enjoyment of movies on his large screen TV. Here is what he needs:
Dolby Digital and DTS receiver
DD & DTS DVD Player
full set of fronts, center, rears and a powered sub

I know that this is pretty hard for some of you that spend $15,000 on speakers alone, but I figure that if we can get one more person a little bit closer, then all the better.

I appreciate, as I am sure he will too, all of your help.
