Im really surprised. I think Sony is in trouble. This was their bread and butter game. One of the biggest reasons to own the PS2.
You mean Vice City? It already came out for PS2 a while ago ;)

Kidding, I know you mean in the now known series that isn't top down.

Do you have a link or anything that mentions this news? :)

Peter Moore said XBox 360 only. There ya go listening to Gamespot haha.
This is a shocker. It's also good for MS and the 360.
Maybe the episodic content is for 360 only.... for the Marketplace.

Maybe the episodic content is for 360 only.... for the Marketplace.

I don't thnk they could state it any more clearly. GTA4 for 360 only. I'm reading the blog of the conferance and apparently Peter Moore has GTA4 "tatooed" on his arm.

12:22: "Major announcement about one of greatest franchsies of all time." Says its so exciting that he has to take his shirt off. Shows Halo 2 tatto--GRAND THEFT AUTO IV tatoo on other arm. Grand Theft Auto IV October 16 2007 to Xbox 360 ONLY.
That's a pretty huge deal. I can see lots of "horse armor" being sold on Marketplace for this game. :p Seriously, this is a good move by Microsoft.
NICE!!:D If this is true then M$'s competition just got owned. :)

On IGN they clearly state:

"12:20pm: After the Viva Pinata demo ends Marketplace talk starts. It provides users different ways to purchase games. The Fight Night demo helped to increase EA's game sales by 5 times. There will be downloadable TV content ready this week including a Gears of War docudrama that starts on Live and finishes on MTV.

The HD DVD player is shown and it is about 1/3 the size of an Xbox 360. It will be ready this holiday season.

On October 16th 2007 Grand Theft Auto 4 will be available on Xbox 360. There was no mention of an exclusive to 360.

The Crysis demo was shown for PC with real-time footage. It is basically the same footage that has been shown by EA. "

Per Team Xbox, 360 gets GTA4 first. With exclusive episodic content via Live.

"...I'm reading the blog of the conferance and"

your reading someone's descriptions of the event, misinformation is possible.
As per the official GTA4 site, it isn't exclusive, nor is it indicated that it will come out earlier for the 360.

Look for yourself:

http://rockstargames.com/grandtheftauto4/

ETA: Apparently R*'s official e-mail states simultaneous release for 360 and PS3. Someone's not telling the whole truth.

ETA2: "Following the announcement during the Microsoft press conference, Rockstar Games issued a press release confirming that GTAIV would be hitting both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 simultaneously in the fall of 2007."
Sorry, misinformation.

Lots of people are confused right now, but it looks like Rockstar's official statement is a simultaneous release.
I could care less if it's exclusive, I'm just happy MS is on a level playing field with Sony this time around. I hated how they seemed to get the short end of the stick during the last generation.
If nothing else, it appears MS has neutralized a big advantage Sony had.

with Xbox Live, gamers might be able to buy some horse armor for their GTA 4 too :p
post #19 of 44
lol, MS fanboys dreams given hope then crushed immediately after (not this board but some others, countless topics invading the PS3 boards about exclusitivity).
I'm watching the press conference right now and Moore didn't say anything about exclusivity.
Fanboy wars aside, their is definite value to exclusivity. The more platforms a game releases to, the less time is spent polishing the game and molding it for the specific hardware.
I guess the episodic content will be exclusive but the whole damn thing WILL be Xbox 360 exclusive even with a "simultaneous" launch. How? GTA October 26, PS3 Nov 11.

Still not exclusive, since GTA4 is coming out in 2007, not 2006.
GTA 4 is also going to be released on the PS3.
Wonder if hands will have fingers now?
yes we are aware it's not exclusive.. But really who cares? That game was fun the first time around for about 3 hours..

Wow, this is interesting. It appears MS was offered GTA 3 for Xbox exclusively and turned down Rockstar, thinking GTA would hurt their corporate image, lol.

Under Allard, the third-party division had failed to spot Grand Theft Auto III as the killer application. Allard had organized a group of game managers to evaluate proposals for games. They asked questions of developers, such as, "What would a gamer do in 60 seconds of game play?" The process was secretive, and it had been nicknamed "The Star Chamber," after a 1980s Michael Douglas movie where a group of judges meted out street justice in secrecy. (The movie itself was named after a secret medieval society of judges who vindictively abused the powers of the courts). Unfortunately for Microsoft, the Star Chamber turned down the proposal from RockStar games for Grand Theft Auto III. The Star Chamber members sent the proposal back to RockStar Games with the suggestion to beef up the game. When RockStar later cut a deal with Take-Two Interactive to create an exclusive for the PlayStation 2, Microsoft didn't even get a last-minute chance to bid for the deal itself.
More juicy tidbits here.

Also, MS inked a deal with Epic instead of Valve, and Epic pushed MS to up the RAM to 512MB on the 360, hurting initial release availability.
