I've had it with this upgrade

I just can't get it done.

First, I have Verizon FIOS for broadband and use VOIP for phone. So whenever I dial out, it'll stop anywhere between 4 units and 200 units. Just can't get it done. I know that people say you need a real phone line. I tried it at a friend's place, but he's in an apartment, so maybe that's a problem, too.

But then I read that it might be a problem with MSN's phone lines. So I've opened an account with both AOL and MSN, but I can't get a handshake connection. It keeps telling me that my username/password combo is wrong.

For AOL, I input -- aol.com, username@aol.com, password.

Then I tried MSN after reading that maybe AOL won't do it. So with MSN, I type MSN, msn/username, password. Nada.

Could it be that my problem is more the ISP number than the phone line? And how complicated is it to get an image for the hard drive itself? I'm not upgrading the HD because I think this UTV may really be obsolete within the next year.

Any help? Thanks.

I had trouble at first. I finally connected my UTV to the phone junction box on the outside of the house and it worked great.

For the AOL entry did you try it both ways? With and without the @aol.com username?

Is there a generic entry option were you can just use the username/password along with the access number you are using?

As far as using the default MSNTV/WebTV dialup download option there was a trick where people could try alternative local access numbers... by pulling the phone cord after it attempts to dial the first local number. (Is that correct fellow UTVers?) The UTV will then attempt to dial out to another local access number. You might have better luck with that access number. Check the UTV FAQ for details I think.

Harden....with the effort and time you have put into this, you could have got 3.7 off the net, found a "registered" copy of winhex, read the instructions, made a couple mistakes...asked for help and done the upgrade 500 times over.
Why are people still trying to do the phone line thing...

Use your computer!

klassic,

But doesn't opening up the UTV void your warranty (yeah, I know it's a dying product).

I'm just concerned that opening up the box will be tricky and easy to break something, no?

I don't know what warrenty you would even still have on a UTV... but you will break nothing if you open it.
Take out the 2 little screws out of the back and open it up like a clam shell (the top back side hinges up and over the front.
There is one ribbon cable going from the mother board to the front panel...just flip the top right over and leave it like that, or just pull the ribbon cable from the connector on the mother board.
It is really quite easy.. once you do it you will see.
Once the front panel is disconnected you can still work all functions with the remote...you just won't see any lights flashing. I suggest leaving the power on before unplugging the UTV, so you know it is turned on if you need to power it up with the cover removed

If you don't care about any recorded programs, just pull out the drive and zero it with MHD3. Then load the image
If you want to keep the recordings you will have to "hot swap" the drive to beat the security.

All info is in this forum.
You will, however, need the 3.7 image... you might have to chant the name Kazak, or hope someone else will post it again..... my feeling is Kazak is reading this and will take pity once again. I still don't have highspeed ;)

Take on the challenge, you will feel good about yourself after...."I did it!"
There are a lot of people on here who can guide you whenever you are stuck.
That's what forums are all about... and it is a little boring in here.

Harden,

Unless you have an extended Warranty the original Warranty is long over.

Just remember to REMOVE the Access Card BEFORE opening the case. Since it is hidden behind a flip down panel it can be easy to forget. Also notice that the lid is "hinged" by pivoting at the front. Place the UTV on the edge of a Table to allow room for the cover to move and easier to slot it back in to the proper holes later. There is a Ribbon Cable on the RCA (Two on the Sony) UTV which if you remove it (making it easy to completely remove the Lid) just remember to replace it again. It only goes in one way so be gentle.

The Power Supply isn't protected so take care not to stick or touch it with anything. Even unplugged it might cause a nasty jolt (like a TV or Microwave).

I've messed with 6 UTVs (Sony and RCA) over the years and I've damaged one Access Card Reader by forgetting the Access Card was in place. (I've lucked out several more times with it in place and the Card just "flexed" when it hit the Cover)

I'm still using the UTV with the Damaged Card Reader today. Had to spend about an hour or so bending the contacts back into place and delicately replacing the Card. The Card is keeping the Reader in place so if I remove it the reader tends to "Pop" up. Replacing the card at a bit of an angle Pops it back down.

If you've ever worked on a PC Computer just treat your UTV the same way... It should survive OK with some general safety guidelines.

Once again, here is the 3.7 image. I found a new place to upload it to. This place does not have a down load limit. It does have a time-frame delete limit of 30 days from the last time it was down loaded though. Since this is a free site, you may have to try several times to get it though. Just keep trying! It will work for everyone.

Here is the 32MB image:

On the first page, scroll down and click the free button, then on the next page scroll down to: No premium-user. Please enter ### code, enter the code, then click the download mirror button. Wait for your turn or try again if to many connections have been made.

And I would like to again recommend using a usb2.0 drive enclosure instead of opening up the pc. Winhex works perfectly well with one. I've got one I paid about $15 for on sale. If you don't need to use it all the time - say just for a quick backup - you don't need one with a fan or any fancy cooling arrangements. You _do_ backup your pc's don't ya!
