I'd get three S-7EX for up front, vertically oriented of course.

I heard the big TAD's at CES. OMG it was freakin' incredible. That was one of the major highlights for me. I went on two different days with two different people. They are not "audiophiles" by any stretch of the imagination. They were both very impressed

Eventhough they were in different rooms at CES, I was suprised in the sound difference between the TAD Ref 1 and the Pioneer S-1EX. I guess that's the difference in $51K.

No biggy.

Getting over the Pioneer name is going to be a big hurdle to get over for more dealers to carry them.

Not if you've heard them ...and word of their magnificence is spreading.
If you love music, you don't care about names, there is only cache amongst those who are interested more in the gear than the sound.
Hell, I've even heard Sony ES speakers that I liked some time ago.

Agreed...you have to show interest in hearing them.

Kal's article should help that.

Well once again I spent some time with the venerable S-1EX speakers. I had intended to compare them with the Focal Be1027 and the 1037. Unfortunately the Focals were no longer there, so I listened to the B&W 802D. All I can say is wow for both. I had a friend with me who owns a pair of Cerwin Vegas driven by a Panasonic receiver. Not a bad sound actually. Just to wet our palette we first listened to Paradigm S8v1. The amp and pre were McIntosh. I didn't really pay much attention to the Models. The S8 are an outstanding speaker. The bass was robust and it had an "all there" sound. I thought they were a bit bright sounding, which surprised me because I own a pair of the old MkIII with the textile tweeter. The sound stage was convincing. Well my friend was amazed. He actually said "MY GOD THOSE ARE ------- AWSOME". Now it was time for the B&Ws. After 30 seconds, I thought I saw a tear in his eye. Now the Pioneers, we both were blown away by the sound stage. It is huge!!! To make a long story short the 802D and the S-1EX sound to our ears much more natural and just plain better than the S8s. I know at the price difference you would expect a better sound but, the law of diminishing returns is at play here. The S-1ex did sound well worth the $3000 premium over the S8s, but the 802Ds compared to the S-1ex was very close. I liked the B&Ws bass, it sounded more natural in its decay than the S-1ex. In the end we were split, I loved the S-1ex he gave the 802d his vote. I think it was the Pioneers huge sound stage that that swayed me. just an amazing speaker. I will be picking up my set in early Sept.

"I liked the B&Ws bass, it sounded more natural in its decay than the S-1ex. " I agree but I found the mid-bass of the Pioneers less emphasized than that of the B&Ws. The result was that the B&Ws were more critical of placement and that could be a really big factor in comparisons.

Especially when talking about differances in soundstage.

Funny I just placed an order for the S-1EX. 6-8 weeks before delivery. Most expensive speaker I have ever purchased, but I actually love the sound.
MY FIRST TRULY HIGH END SPEAKER!!!!

Very nice. Certainly looks more affordable than thier flagship model. Wish I could hear them locally. I noticed they maintained the same time aligned front baffle design (all the EX speakers look like they are carved out of a large circle).

Not really. They had a pair on the floor at CEDIA but, in the midst of all the traffic and noise, all I could say about them is that they played.

I read the review.. Great read Kal.. these seem very nice! You know, funny, i saw these listed on our accomodation page and never thought to check them out. I'm in the mood for a speaker upgrade... been using PSB Stratus series since '00. I like the idea of the 3 center's across the front. Can they (S-7EX) be vertically stand mounted? I'll look into it...

I've read a bit about the S-3EX at a few Japanese web sites. I'm glad to see Pioneer making the line a bit more afordable. $6000 is still a nice chunk. That's the same price as the S-2EX book shelf speaker. I still wonder how the system compares withthe S-1ex. Its not really just a smaller version as it doesn't have the beryllium tweeter. Very sexy design I love that curve. Cant wait to get mine.

Wow counting the days now. Will be getting my S-1ex in 2 weeks!!! I can hardly wait. This will be my first true Hi-end speaker. What an upgrade from my Paradigm 9se MKIII, which has served me well. Next step is to get an Icepower amp. Maybe a used Bel Canto pair.

what do you drive your 5.0 system with kind of amps (the S-1EX) I have been looking for the sherbourn and eartquake cinemagrande amp--
post #88 of 149
Currently I'm still waiting for the speakers. I was told it would take 6 weeks to get the speakers and its been 4 weeks 6 days so I should see them very soon. I will eventually complete a 5.1 system based on th S-1ex. I plan to use ICEpower based amps in the system, but not necessarily Bel Canto. I will use my old Acurus A200x3 as the primary amp until the upgrade.

Do you have a complete 5.0 Pioneer EX ssystem?

Would you mind telling me where you ordered this speakers from? I am in Houston and I couldn't find any dealer around here carrying it.

Best regards,
Andrew
