So I snagged a Philips DVDR3455H/55 player on eBay, new in box, for $235 shipped. I read this thread for a bit first, and I wasn't particularly bothered by the lack of true "chase play" on Timer-set recordings, as I don't have the desire to do that much. I liked the DV input as well as the USB drive option. And DivX as well, so that's why I chose this player. ( I burned a LOT of DivX movies in college...)
I didn't see anything on Philips' web site about the difference between the /55 player and the /37 player. Same stats, specs, and features. I probably should have done a bit more research, though. The player is set up and seems to work fine with the default settins... I've recorded shows and it pauses live TV and all that. Menus are all in English. I have yet to play a DVD in it, though, so I'm wondering if it's a different region player, but I couldn't find that out. Regardless, I don't plan on using it as my main DVD player, as I already have a 5-disc progressive scan changer that I prefer to use (more convenient for box sets of TV shows). Though it would be rather annoying.
While I haven't tried all the features, the only problem I've run into is that the remote, while looking physically identical to the /37 remote, has [+ P - ] button where the [+ Ch -] button should be. The other side has the same [+ Vol -] button, though.
Since I have analog cable, I have no cable box, so I need to use this as the tuner. I can punch in the channel # just fine on the number pad, but the [+ P -] button does not seem to do anything at all. Neither does the [+ Vol -] button, but I don't care much about that as I pipe the sound through my receiver anyways.
It's rather annoying that I can't flip sequentially through the channels! There are different firmware upgrades on Philips' site for the /55 than the /37, none of which I've tried yet. I'm going to try the listed one first, but I'm curious if I can load the firmware for the /37 and get it to work....
Any suggestions? Anyone ever heard of the /55 model?
Edit: Upon further review, the /55 is a Region 4 player. Sucks for me not paying attention... Again, not a big deal due to my current setup, but I'll check and see if a firmware swap will fix that. Still no word on the [+ Ch -] button issue, though.
