New LG-DN191H - Page 5

So i bought the display model from my store (i work at RadioShack). Like a fool i belived the "label" on the component outputs. SO i figured that i would get 720p out of the player on my Olevia 37" LCD. But no....480p. :-( Any news on getting this thing to do HD over component?

Did someone get sucess within US model to unblock regions?
Just received the LG DNX190MH today and whereas it happily plays at hi res through HDMI I have tried both suggested region unlock codes without success.

Nothing seems to happen when I key in the pause,3,1,4,1,5,9 - there is no display appearing either on screen or on the player display which then allows me to choose 0 for multiregion.

This appears to have worked for others so what am I doing wrong?

Hello,

I recently bought a HDMI upconverting dvd player from LG branded as DK191H , and from the model name and feature set, it seems to be very similar to the player discussed here. Basicly the dvd sports component out, hdmi out, divx playing etc...

I tried to use 720p out from the component port bue apparently my LG rz26lz50 LCD only support progressive scan trough the DVI port, so I'm buying a HDMI-DVI cable to test this.

But my question to you is, yesterday I tested a DVD and I noticed that the player had some ocasional stops. It happened like 6 or 7 times trougout the moie, it was almost as if it was buffering data or something, the image would pause and you could hear the drive spinning up. Doeas anyone else have this problem? I rejected the possibility of a dirty DVD since the DVD was bought yesterday.

UPDATE: I just added the HDMI-DVI cable to the mix ... basicly I have no picture in the TV unless I'm using a ripped DVD. I'm assuming this is an HDCP incompatibility of sorts. Is there any way around this? It seems rather silly to me that a copy protection systems stops me from viewing my genuine DVD's...

Thankd

Hello everyone,
I got a DN-191H a couple of weeks ago and I am relatively happy with it. I like the image quality when using the upconversion ports and it plays the .avi/divx files nicely, without stops or gaps. However, there are some things that are cutting down on my satisfaction with this player and being relatively new with it, I have a couple of questions for the hardcore users.
First, is there any way you can keep the aspect ratio of a divx/.avi file? I have some files with 2.35:1 or so image compression and they would look stretched on a 16:9 (which is roughly 1.78:1) screen. If someone knows of any setting that would keep the original aspect ratio, I would be grateful.
Also, my TV only has a DVI input port and therefore I need to use a HDMI/DVI cable and get the sound on the audio cables. However, even though the TV specs are stating that the DVI digital input works together with the audio analog inputs, I can't seem to make it work. I'm wondering if this could be because of the player itself, I was thinking that outputting the digital signal through HDMI might not allow the analog audio outputs to be enabled in the same time . This is right now quite a dragdown, because even though the component cables allow the upconversion, I can only play the commercial DVD's at 480 res through component, which is not that much of a quality gain. Anyone tried HDMI/DVI successfully?
Thank you in advance for the help.

Just picked up this dvd player today from BB. I had a JVC XV-NP10S that was several years old that started to crap out on me. Overall it was a nice player but more and more the movies I rented from Netflix would skip and freeze up on me. Also it was getting flaky on playing xvid files and often movies that I made copies of would lose audio sync about 3/4 of the way through. Aside from those recent problems, I never did like the way the JVC player handled FF/RW. It wasn't smooth even in 2x speed and I would always end up overshooting where I wanted to get too.

So far I am loving the LG. The FF/RW capability is exactly how I like it. I have put in all the discs that I was having problems with and they all played perfectly. No skipping. No loss of audio sync. Other than that, this dvd player is definitely more than I need. I don't have an HDTV so I can't benefit from the higher resolutions and upscaling. But at least now I have the capability if I ever decide to upgrade my TV. Right now I'm just using component and optical audio. Picture still looks great on my 32" AFAIC.

Just noticed this DVD player is going to be on sale day after Thanksgiving at Best Buy for $70 after rebate (via Black Friday ads websites).

Since I'm looking at getting a new upconvert, this caught my eye. Do people think this will be a worthy purchase for the price or something else better in same price range?

FYI, I have a Sony SXRD KDS-50A2000 and I'm really just looking at a stop-gap DVD player til Bluray vs. HDDVD gets sorted out.

EDIT: Best Buy has demanded that all their ads be removed from all the sites so you can no longer verify for yourself. Guess it's a good thing I downloaded it

Can someone please clarify for me? Can copy protected DVDs upconvert to 720p or 1080i when using an HDMI cable?
Yes, That's it. Copy protected upconvert through HDMI, unprotected upconvert through components.

Hi all,
Let me get this straight, there are no hacks that work with the dn191h and it can not upscale a purchased dvd.

True and Not True (sort of) It will upscale purchased DVD through HDMI ONLY not components.

Is this an overall good player to buy, or is there something sold by Best Buy for around $100 that is better?

I just bought the LG DNX190UH the one with the usb socket. Im not impressed at all. Its connected to my 37" LG LCD screen with the HMDI cable and picture quality is not that good. Its like watching VHS!!!!!!!!

was told to ask the following question in this thread. so here goes.

I know the player will play dvd-r and dvd+r of the single layer variety. I also know that it will play store bought dual layer discs, but will the player play dual layer dvd-r or +r variety? I haven't burnt any dual layer discs but plan to in the future.

I have a seven year old Pioneer player but purchased a new one for the Pioneer being old didn't always like to play home made discs. I've seen in some specs of new players that specifically say they play dual layer discs, but this LG player doesnt' say so. Does this mean it won't play them or they just didn't bother to include them in the list of playable discs?

Thanks

Ron

I just bought this last week @ Best Buy. A few days later I got my first HDTV, a 32". Over the weekend I hooked up the two via HDMI. The picture is amazing! But my problem is that while it plays nice and smooth my original movies, it wants to pause every few minutes if I play a backup dvd. Does this mean the player is bad? I only ask because these worked fine on my old cheapo Apex $25 player and expected the new unit to play anything under the sun? Any ideas?
I find it pauses on normal dvds every few minutes. So i'm returning it 2morro
post #137 of 260
Darn. As I'm glad it doesn't seem to just be mine freezing, I really am not looking forward to tearing it down, packing it up, and brining it back. Is this a prevelant problem with this model? I don't want to exchange it for another just to have it happen again...

I bought the LG DN191H unit at Best Buy, and it has very good picture and sound on my rear projection crt hdtv. Protected commercial DVD movies play smoothly and look great over the hdmi cable. Component output is switchable between 480p, 720p, and 1080i for your unprotected backups. (I hope you let the kids play with your backups while your valuable originals are kept safely locked up!)
  • In short, protected content can only be sent in hd to the hdmi port. Unprotected DVD can play over the hdmi or component ports.

I have seen no evidence of the pausing others have noted. I have played xvid and divx avi movies, mp3, wma, vcd, and svcd. The only thing that has not played was a custom vcd with movie encoded at very non-standard data rates and with very long filenames. I will experiment this weekend to see if it is the long filenames causing the problem.
  • Briefly, anything that had a reasonable chance of playing, HAS played.....

Seems like a pretty good buy to me......

I exchanged the faulty unit at Best Buy the other day and couldn't be happier. This one does play all my originals and backups (yup, keep the originals boxed up in the basement away from the kids in waterproof plastic bins ) with exceptional quality. Glad I stuck w/ the model and tried it again.

I am a computer geek, but am new to all this terminology for A/V equipment. I do know that my player is hooked up to the tv via HDMI for its outstanding picture. Now I just need a quality (and cheap priced) audio system to complete my home theater experience to replace my old $100 theater in a box.

Anybody having luck using a hdmi-dvi adapter? Thinking about buying this dvd player for a westinghouse 19" lcdtv.

Ok, so I thought I would try a hack to get up-converting over component out-put. Well I didn't do it but I found a very strange phenomenon. When you turn on the player and open the dvd tray, then push 1, pause, 1 pause, the red circle with a stripe through it appears in the upper right hand of the screen. Then if you repeat the process with the number 2: 2, pause, twenty-one times, the red circle shows up again. then if you do it with the number 3 ten times it shows up again. For each number there is a different amount of times required to get the red circle to show up. Strange. Unfortunately when I restart the machine the same pattern doesn't get the same results. The amount of repetition needed to get the red circle changes. I also tried another approach. I started with: 1, pause, then I did 2, pause, then I did 3, pause and so on through the numbers again and again. each time through different numbers got the red circle to appear.

So, why do certain numbers make the red circle appear? Are they part of the code? Why don't the numbers yield consistent results? I know I sound like a nut, but get out your remote and try it and tell me it doesn't make you wonder what's going on. I am hoping someone with a mathematical mind will do it and find a pattern. Good luck, and maybe together we can figure this out.

When my LGDVB418 started giving me problems I looked at one of these and remembered having gotten one 9 months ago and opening it up seeing a Zoran Vaddis 888 chipset in it I took it back-didn't like the video compared to the 418. Guess what I got to replace the 418? Another refurbished one off of ebay-I couldn't be happier. BTY-the 531 firmware that everybody advises to be installed in the 418 is identical to the upgrade disc that LG sent out to correct the infamous audio sync problem that the 418 suffered from.

HELP!!!!

I have seen multiple posts about people being able to play MP4s on this unit, what are you using to create the files? I have tried multiple DVDs full of MP4s (using Handbrake to create the MP4s and are encoded using xVID encoder).

Everytime to try I insert the disk it tried to read and then says check disk.

What am I doing wrong???

What are you guys using to create the Divx MPEG4. I cannot get the player to recognize any disks that contain MPEG4 files. What am I doing wrong.

I just got this player from my loving wife who knows nothing about A/V but was being sweet so I'm going to keep it and live with it until HD DVD or Bluray. Anyway, I put in Gladiator Widescreen and it looked great however it had bars on the top and bottom of the screen.

I have a 40" Samsung LCD LNS-4051D I think is the model.

I tried a few things without much luck. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong or will I have to live with WS DVD's being played with the bars on top and bottom?
It's the aspect ratio of the movie. Look on the back of the dvd case. It should say 2.35:1 ratio. That is OAR and is unavoidable unless you want to squeeze and zoom.

I recently bought one of these players for my uncle. He got a 32 inch lcd for x-mas and bought a cheapo $30 dvd player to go with it. I tanked it and bought him the LG. It is running directly to the tv via hdmi- not going through a receiver at all.

Problem: when outputting audio over hdmi, there is a "fluttering" sound that comes through the speakers. You can hear the sound of the movie as well but the fluttering sound is overbearing. I tried the analog audio and it was okay. I tried optical on my mother's a/v receiver and that worked fine. Is this a set up issue? Can you give me the set up parameters to fix this.

If not, I'm sure my uncle doesn't mind running a L/R analog out to the tv. But which jacks are paired with the hdmi input. I didn't see any analog audio inputs assigned for hdmi pairing in case you don't want to use hdmi audio.

Thanx

Yep, it does say 2.35:1. What should I look for to make sure the DVD's I buy/rent are true fullscreen widescreen? What about DIVX/XVID files, what resolution should they be?

Thanks for your help.
