OK, I changed the name of my files from .MP4 to .mpeg and .mpg. With this setting, I am able to see the list of files but they won't play. The files are within the dimensions you listed above.

Any other tips?

BTW... Now I can't play these in QuickTime either.

Thanks for your help.

Not sure about the divx/xvid thing. Ration for "full" widescreen is 1.85:1. Certain movies will just come that way. I don't know of any dvds you can buy that has a 1.85 version and a 2.35 version. I think that decision is made at the studio when the dvd is produced.

Problem: when outputting audio over hdmi, there is a "fluttering" sound that comes through the speakers. You can hear the sound of the movie as well but the fluttering sound is overbearing. I tried the analog audio and it was okay. I tried optical on my mother's a/v receiver and that worked fine. Is this a set up issue? Can you give me the set up parameters to fix this.

If not, I'm sure my uncle doesn't mind running a L/R analog out to the tv. But which jacks are paired with the hdmi input. I didn't see any analog audio inputs assigned for hdmi pairing in case you don't want to use hdmi audio.

Thanx

Any thoughts?

ryvanya: Thanks for your help. I'm not sure on your problem. I have a very basic setup with this player. HDMI to my TV then I use my TV OUT composite connections to connect to what really is a PC speaker system. It works and I didn't notice any 'fluttering' of the sound but I'm not really sure what I should be listening for either. I think the unit may be defective.

Hi just got one of these... Is there any way to turn off the automatic stretching of divx/xvid movies to not fill up the whole screen.. such as a divx file that is in the 2.35:1 ratio, it automatically takes away the black bars and stretches the movie and it looks all messed up.. I have found no setting to turn this off where it will leave the black bars in... any help please???? thnx
post #156 of 260
I think it may be sending too many channels via hdmi to the tv. I looked up the instructions on the website and it mentioned possible distortion causes. I'll update the final result in case anyone else has the problem.
Has anyone else gotten MPEG4 files to play? If so, what is the file extension and what did you use to create?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I was just getting ready to ask this myself. I just tried my first xVid file and it played without a problem but it filled the screen when it should have been letterboxed considering it was at a 2.40:1 aspect ratio.

Any ideas?

What is the file extension of the file? What did you use to create it?

.avi

Here's the specs on the file from GSpot:

Type: OpenDML AVI
IMRR: 1.00

x:y: 608x256 (2.38:1) [=19:8]
Bitrate: 796 kb/s
FPS: 23.976
Qf: 0.213 bits/pixel

It was created with Nandub v1.0rc2

I have a Samsung LN-S4095D (or is it DX honestly I don't know) and when I hook this player up via HDMI my picture is fine until I go to 1080i when it starts flashing purple every so often, it happens both with a movie playing AND in the menus.

It's pretty random but I'd say it's like every 1/2 a second or so it flashes purple (took a while to get the picture) I've linked to 2 pictures of what's happening.

I've tried the 2 HDMI cables I have (not very good ones though I think) and both HDMI ports on the tv, happens with both ports and both cables, the HD cable box works fine with both cables on both ports at 1080i.

I've already returned it one and the second one does the exact same thing.

So any ideas? Go buy a new cable and see if that one works, or is there just something going on here that I wont' be able to fix?

Normal
Not quite normal

Anyway, any help would be much appreciated.

So you have gotten the .avi files to work, what about .mp4?
I haven't tried MP4. The issue is it stretches the files to fit the fullscreen instead of displaying it letterboxed.

Guys

Regarding the SOUND, which player do you recommened? I have read lots of complaints regarding the DN191H's sound capabilites. What if you run Optical into a Bose Lifestyle system? WIll the lack of a digital decoder still just run 2 channel sound? It seems like both players have good capabilities but the Phillips has no optical out.

What do you recommened regarding sound/running optical in the DN191H? Thanks!

Its on sale at BB today for 69.99!

I got one of the DN191H models for Christmas. I have an older Samsung 32" HDTV CRT that only has a DVI connector, but since this model upscales via HDMI it should work with a DVI-HDMI cable, correct?

I bought this player because it was cheap ($79) at BB, and a buddy of mine bought one and I was impressed by the picture. I have 4 other DVD players, so if this is a disappointment I'll chalk it up to a learning experience and be done with it.

My TV will support up to 1080i; my questions are:
Over HDMI will this player upconvert *protected* disks to 1080i (actually DVI-HDMI in my case)?

As one other posted asked, can you play MP3s and show pictures from a media card at the same time?

We took one of these players, hooked it up to a Dell 42" Plasma via component, made a copy of Miami Vice and played it and the opening scene with the speedboat racing was awesome.

I'm still curious to know about the it stretching the picture when playing DIVX when it should be letterboxed.

How will this player handle having an HDMI cable and component cables plugged in at the same time?

I have a projector capable of 720p with HDMI, but my receiver and TV do not have HDMI ports. Obviously, I'd like to upconvert for my projector so I was thinking that I could get an HDMI cable and run that straight from the player to my projector and also have component cables to the receiver for those times when I just want to use the TV. Everything is neatly placed in my entertainment unit so I don't want to have to pull out the DVD player to swap the cables every time I switch my monitor. So will this player allow me to keep both plugged in at the same time and still output an upconverted image through the HDMI port?

Of course, all of this wouldn't be necessary if someone could figure out a hack to get the damn thing to output 720p through component cables. :-)

Anyone have any ideas on DIVX/XVID playback stretching to fill the screen even when the aspect ratio is 2.35:1?
I have a LG-DN191H and it was working great over component. I just bought an Onkyo TX-SR674...so I plug the 191 into the SR674 (via HMDI) and then into my Westinghouse LTV-27w7 (via HDMI).

Now, over HDMI, it seems to play a few minutes and then LOCK UP. I mean, I have to unplug the DVD player to reset it.

I guess it's going back. I'll try another from BB and see if the same thing happens.

I'm wondering if it's a HDCP issue with my Onkyo. I also have the stupid 8300HD problem as well....(over HDMI)

I am thinking about getting this DN191H for my home use and just stumbled across this thread. It sounds like a solid player for most users.

I have the DN191H connected to my 32" Samsung HDTV, and the picture is much improved over standard DVD, with one exception. I found that dark portions of the display show serious artifacting. If I am watching a dark movie like "The Matrix" the effect is so apparent it ruins the experience of watching this. It is connected using a Philips 6' DVI-HDMI cable to the TV. It does this regardless of the resolution setting. In the owner's manual, it states if you experience problems such as this your TV may not be compatible? What gives? Anyone else have this issue? I have planned to take the unit to a friends house and connect it to his TV with the same cable to rule out the unit and/or cable being bad.

Just bought the LG-DN191H, I have the same problem. I thought it was the cable, will exchange it tomorrow and see what happens.

To answer someone else's earlier question about dual layer DVD -R's, it will play them. Funny thing though, component upconvert doesn't work on them, as if the copy protection is still there. Tried MI3, dual layer copy and couldn't get 1080i through component. It might be my crappy TV though, 65" samsung CRT HDTV...been nothing but problems.

Does anyone know what the idea/reasoning is behind protected DVD's not upconverting? (for component) I mean, what is the reason that [whomever] wants component upconverting locked out?

Because the component output is an analog signal and can be copied easilly, where the HDMI output only upconverts when HDCP software is on both sides of the cable and does not allow for copying the information.

Hi, I've had this player for about six weeks. I've played mp3, on cd and music on dvd that I podcasted from itunes it sounded great the PQ. I think is great this replaced a old tosh. I have a 65" mitz. and the 480p after using AVIA on it with this dvd player was WOW AVIA has you cut contrast so the pic. looked a little soft but the colors, wood looked like wood, and not just brown, all the colors that you didn't see before It's like seeing them for the first time. I saw none of the problems you, are having. it played dvd-r,dvd+r, I have tryed the hacks like the rest of you with same end. nada. I am using component, but couldn't get 1080i. but was trying to get it on the fly not stoping the movie but just ll'. I will try this , it is a little hard because I only have one set of inputs and have to change them with a HD cable box. butt will try again. I didn't get dvd burner till Christmas, And I'm new to that also. Keep looking for the hacks because the switcher boxes for component vid. aren't that good

Hello,

I am new to the forum and have a quick question.

About a month ago I purchasd the LG DN191H because of the price and the ability to play Divx.

However, I seem to be having some problems with it and hope you can help.

I have burned two CD-Rs of Divx files. The LG recognizes one of them no problem and plays it without any stutters or audio loss. The other CD hangs up and freezes or sometimes won't play at all. I burned both of them using NERO.

The other problem is that my LG has issues recognizing DVD+R and DVD-R. I have some old DVDrs from about a year ago that play fine, however I just burned about four more and the LG only recognizes one of them flawlessly. The other three stutter and hang up or won't play at all.

Is anyone else having issues like this? Is there any advice?

Thanks for your help!

Hi,this is minetoo again, this is to Chrissaid, did you try those old burnt dvds on your LG dn191h with the component vid. outputs into HD on your TV? this model will upscale to 1080i I was only able to do it once and that was last night. with a friends copy of one of his movies. But he uses a PC. and I use a mac. every time I try a copy my tv gos back to 480p but his dvd didn't it played HD 16/9 1080i on my tv. so the Lg dn191h will upscale but I don't know why it didn't work from my copys.
Hi, this minetoo again, I'm sorry about not answering your Q. I have had no problems except above. I have played cd-r, DVD-r/+r DVD-rw, the only time had problems when tryed to jump chapt.forword and back slow remote freezes up. but no more pic.image.then my HD cable box nice PQ. I ran AVIA on it and My vids. are great. I haven't tryed Divx files But I will.
I'm really upset that this player seems to stretch all the xvid/divx files instead of using the black bars. If anyone knows how to get it to use black bars, please let me know!
you're all so lucky that you can get DVD-R and DVD+Rs to work in your LG. I keep trying but to no avail. They either stutter or hang up. I tried playing them on my friend's Zenith and they all work fine. So I'm not sure what the problem is. Are you all using a specific brand of DVD-Rs?
