Monitor Audio Owners Thread - Page 107

Hello Guys,
Im quite new to AVSforums, and have not too much experience with audio.

I have just got confirmation of order a set of Monitor audio speakers:
BR6
BR1
BR LCR center
BR W 10 Subwoofer

Im picking them up at saturday.

still not sure about recyver, which one could do the best job with these speakers? Im thinking about ONKYO TX-SR605, is it good enought receiver for that speaker set? or I should look for more expencive DENON, or NAD?
yes I do need a hdmi 1.3 connection (my camcorder records 5.1 channel audio, and the only way to listen to it is to connect camcorder via an HDMI cable to 5.1 chanel system, otherwise I have to hear only stereo).

one more question: BR6 have a 4 ohms resistance, and they do have a bi-amping possibility, but on ONKYO SR605 manual says it is recomended to use a 8 ohms or higher resistance speakers while using bi-amping function. so Im wondering if it can be to high load on Onkyo recyver??? any suggestions?

thanks for any recomendations

I have RS6,S and just upgraded my receiver from an older Onkyo that had 100 w.p.c.to a Yahama rxv 2700 that Pushes 140 w.p.c. I can tell a diffrence, some people will tell you that a 100 w.p.c. receiver will be fine but the more power seem,s to open these speakers up a lot. Also added a hsu vt-1 sub and could not be more happy with with the sound in movies and music.I also have a Onkyo 805 that pushes about 130 w.p.c. and it does, a fine job but I belive I like the Yamaha just a little more.

If you look around you can get a really good deal on some nice receivers as the new year lineup will be out soon for most manf.To push a 4 ohm.speaker you need to go with a higher end receiver or even seperate amp.

Just an update... I got my GFA-555 MkII in today around 3pm and just shut the system down a few minutes ago. For some odd reason, it took a good 45 minutes to an hour for the amp to start sounding the way it should. Maybe it sat for a while and the caps needed some time to charge and normalize.

The jury is still out on whether or not the brightness of the RS6's are completely solved or not. So far so good. I played a mixed collection of CDs tonight and everything sounded the way they are supposed to. The Adcom has certainly helped! The bass is tighter and even stronger sounding, the midrange still sounds great and the treble seems to be matching up nicely now. It doesn't sound disconnected like before. The soundstaging has opened up quite a bit and imaging has remained precise and spot-on.

I still have some more listening to do before I decide if I keep the RS6's or not. One other thing I'm going to try is replacing the stock binding post jumpers with some heavy speaker cable and see if that does anything.

Anyway, here's a fwe pics of the "new" old amp!

Ok we no longer have a local retailer that sells Monitor Audio's. Can you buy them on-line? If so where? Of course I would like to get a good price for some. Any B/M stores sell and ship them? I like floorstanding fronts but not a must? We heard them long ago( I think they were the silver and gold series) and we fell in love with them. That was like 2 years ago. Well we have saved up and now no one sells them here locally .
They will be 98% for movies and waiting for a Epik Caliber sub . A Denon 3808 will be running them Is the Denon enough reciever(Power) to run them?
Magnolia seems to be an authorized dealer. And there's usually one of those in your local Best Buy.
Yes thought so to but they don't carry them and very high prices even if they did. I tried to get them to budge on the Denon 3808 but they wouldn't even consider matching prices with Ultimate Electronics,so I bought it their

You should PM AudioArchitect (the thread maker) as he is a dealer and may ship.

Ok thanks I'll try that

I was in the same situation. I purchased my GS60's and GS10's from Andy at Saturday Audio (out of Chicago). I live in NY and he gave me a great price, no sales tax and shipped them to me via UPS. Saturday Audio is an authorized dealer and you can find there website and phone number on line.

I'm keeping the RS6's...
I haven't (yet) purchased, but am looking at the RS6. I actually was going to buy tomorrow.

I have to put the center in a cabinet and I see that the silver series center is rear ported. The center for the gold series is closed.

I'm hoping somebody here has figured out what to do about this issue. Stuff a sock (and if so, is the sound not effected?) Go with the gold center (and if so, is the timbre matching ok?) Can't think of anything else.

Has anybody talked to MA about this?

I did a search for "rear port" for this thread and got no hits.

Yes, you can plug the port to reduce the bass output, which should be offset by the increase in bass caused by putting it in the cabinet. And yes a sock will do. Preferably a clean one.

However, you may find that plugging the port reduces the bass too much, so try it both ways. If you will be using an AVR that has built-in Room EQ, like Audyssey, then the EQ will also help balance the bass of the speaker in the cabinet.
I've had my Gold Series speaker for about 2 months now.
I noticed a slight distortion to voices while watching a few movies.
Took a look at the cabinets, drivers, etc searching for the cause.
Turns out that most of the driver mount allen screw/bolts on all 5 of my speakers were loose. Some very loose. So I snugged them all and it seems to have
taken care of the issue.
You might want to check yours.

I hope these dont keep vibrating loose. If so i guess I might try some blue locktite.

Thanks. I don't have an AVR yet, so I'll make sure I get one with Audyssey. I don't know much about Audyssey. I didn't know it could adjust individual frequencies for individual speakers. Awesome!

Oh, and should I be putting some sound attenuation material behind, beside, and above (below?) the speaker in the cabinet space (+ or- a sock)?
I have an RSLCR in a cabinet.I ended up with the rear port unplugged.Just my personal preference...but the RSLCR comes with a foam plug for the port, socks not necessary.

I purchsed a pair of GS20s from brandnamez.
Ordered February 7th. Shipped February 12th. Good communication.
One of the feet on the base assembly was not threaded
to accept the spike. Sent them an email, they responded quickly and I had
a new foot assembly within 10 days.
That said they are not an Authorized Dealer so take that into consideration.

You could also try matthew@theaudioarchitect.com
He quoted me a good delivered price and is an authorized dealer but he didnt have stock and I did not want to wait.

Interesting.
I called them today and they said that they don't ship current models. Said I have to go to Chitown and pick 'em up.

I found a good price on the GR20. On the MA website the GR20 is discontinued. Is there a big disadvantage to the GR20 vs GS20, or more likely, the GR20 vs RS6?

IMO there is very little, if any, audible difference between the GR20 & GS20. I've had my GR20s for almost 4yrs & very recently spent several hours listening to GS20s whilst auditioning a Leema Antila CD. I bought the Leema and back at home with it in my system the GR20s were noticeably faster and more dynamic that what I'd heard from the GS's. I would think this was due to my Musical Fidelity A5 pre/pwr against the Leema amplification the GS20s were hooked up to. As for the RS6, I'm sure all will agree there is daylight between those and the Gold series, simply no comparison.

thanks.

A little late to respond to this but just in case, here is my opinion:

I didn't do a direct in-room comparison but I did listen to both extensively and even with the fuller range I preferred music out of the GS20's. I have a good sub so was not worried about the full range but even on source direct (no sub) the GS20's are not exactly lacking. To me they were just more transparent and precise and went well with my musical tastes.

Also, Paradigm seems to be sensitive to some sources. I felt they lost a lot of musicality when hooked up to Arcam, for example.

In general, I just much preferred the GS20's.

Also, RS6 to GS20 is a large step up for musical complexity and range.

Are the RSFX surrounds bi-amp/bi-wire capable? Can't seem to find anything that says they are or any pics of the backs of them.

Found a pic in the press area of the MA website. There is only one set of binding posts on the RSFX's.

Ok well we have been looking around to buy Monitor Audios and the ones we really wanted (pair of GS20's with a pair of GS10's with the GS center) are a little out of our price range .
So now we are thinking of looking at either
Option 1: 2 pairs of GS10's with a GS center
Option 2: pair of RS8's as fronts with a pair of RS1's as rears and the RS center
The price difference is around $850-$900. I have heard the GR's(which I guess they are the GS's now) but have never heard the GS10's or the RS8's.
So is the extra money worth the GS's or are the RS8's a better deal? My guess is that the GS10's will sound more like the GS's than the RS8's do but is it a $850-$900 difference? I'm assuming the floorstanding will give us more depth and range in sound quality and performance?
I will tell you we will be running them on a Denon 3808 and about to get a Epik Caliber subwoofer for this system. It will be 98% Movies on a ToshibaA35(love this thing). I will not go Blu until I can get a player for what I got the A35 for($149) and bitstreams DTS-HD/MA.
So does anyone have experience with these two speaker lines? How close are the RS8's to the GS10's in sound quality and performance?
Which is a better buy and why?

Have you considered buying used?

Yes I have just feel real leery about used. I would hate to get ripped off and I doubt the warranty transfers?
Superman.... I have not recently compared the GS to the RS line but about 3 months ago I was on a mission to pick up the RS8's and pair them up with a RS LCR. We have Magnolia (stand alone store, not the best buy crowd) and they had the RS6's and the RS8's set up side by side. If you go the way of the Silver line give the RS6's a good look. They cost less money and I found the RS8's to sound very good but muddy in comparison to the RS6's. The RS6's were very lively and seem to match up with the LCR seamlessly, I could not be happier with my purchase of the RS6's and RS LCR. Now I am after the RS CPW's or the RS FX for surround but no one has them set up in Portland, OR. Based on my experience with the recent purchase I think I wil be safe with either. Anyway that's my .02. Good luck.

I've been in this hobby for roughly 10 years, and I have never seen a speaker crap out if it didn't do so with the first few months. So I wouldn't worry too much about the warranty. CD / DVD players, now there's something to get a warranty on.

As far as getting ripped off, that seller has plenty of positive feedback and Audiogon in general has more trustworthy participants than a place like ebay. If you are interested in those speakers, just ask the guy to speak over the phone so you can get a sense for whether or not you trust him.

The biggest issue with buying used speakers is shipping damage. But that is what insurance is for.

Well, good luck!
