Yes, I must think this way too. Actually, I'm pretty confident that they'll sound great in my room, but my track record says otherwise.

Sure it won't sound as good as the reference stuff I have, but a hell of a lot better than it would sound on my car stereo.

I hear you. Possibly wasn't clear in my original post. It's a contrast thing, at least for me. The top-notch recordings sound more better ( sic ), the better the gear, and the not-as-good recordings sound not as much better ( sic ), with better gear. That's probably as clear as mud too. But I hope you get my gist.
( I learned late in the game, and lots of dollars later, how
important the recording is in evaluating. So I often feel
compelled to point that inevitable out: garbage in, garbage out. )

As you already have heard, the ribbon tweeters, I think,
are the best vodka -- like drinking 100% oxygen.

I wish one of you left-coast big-spenders with
12.5 MA Platinums, would pop for an ICE power amp,
do some A/B'ing against your 5000 watt/channel space-heaters,
and submit an exhaustive and detailed report.

I like that. And having heard these wonderful tweeters, it is a very good analogy.

No surprise to me. They always come back. Congrats on the Platinums though. I had a strong feeling they were for you if you had the room.

I was waiting for you to chime in.

I don't know what I was thinking ever leaving the MA family. Will you forgive me for being unfaithful?

Great to see you come full circle Tim. I have been thinking of checking out the Platinums as well, but I have been resisting since my GS60's are only 5 months old. I look forward to hearing how they sound in your room. It is always good to hear "real world" experience over "store demo" experience.

Hey Scott -

Good to be back. Great group of guys here.

Hopefully the Plats will play nice with my room.

You know me, I'll certainly post my experience with all sort of pics to go along with it when they are up and running.

Hello Everyone,

I am new to these posts and am very interested in purchasing the MA RS6 and the RSLCR. I live near Vancouver, BC, Canada and was wondering if there are any Canucks out there who can steer me in the right direction as far as reputable dealers and fair prices for these speakers.

I am upgrading from the Klipsch Reference line. My audio gear consists of Emotiva DMC-1 processor and the Emotiva IPS-1 7-channel amp. My listening is 80% HT and 20% audio. Would these speakers be a good match for my gear? The IPS-1 is rated at 150 Watts per channel.

Thanks in advance!

I have 7 Monitor Audio Platinum speakers on the waya set of PL300's, the PL350 center, and four PL100's as surrounds. All of them will be in the high gloss Ebony finish to go with the rest of the dark wood furniture in our home.

I have to say, thank God they offered the ebony finish because most speakers only come in maple, cherry, rosewood, black ash and sometimes gloss black. The ebony is a much better fit for our decore and more interesting, IMO.

The Focal's were fine speakers overall, but it has been a long time since I was honestly impressed when listening to a set of speakers. The MA Platinum's did that for me. It seemed that many of my recent speaker purchases had turned into nothing more than trying to find the least offensive speaker, rather than something that really wowed me. And with the Platinum's, it wasn't the sort of whiz-bang wow factor that can wear-off and eventually lead to listening fatigue, but rather I was wowed by the smoothness, refinement and incredible detail. No edge, no sibilance, no harshness, just sweet sweet music.

Of course with my luck, I'll get them all set-up in my room and think they suck. Wish me luck on that one. But honestly, if the Platinum's don't sound as good in my room as they did in the dealer's mildly treated demo room, rather than change speakers I will see what I can do to integrate some inconspicuous room treatments.

The Platinum's are due to arrive on 5/7/08, but it could take a couple of days to arrange delivery since they are coming through a freight company.

I'm both excited and a bit apprehensive, but even so, I will be sure to report here how things sound once they are all set-up.

Tim, congrats on the new setup you have on the way. You were mentioning your older speakers above and said they were exciting at first or had a wow factor, but then it just manifest itself as listening fatigue. Were you referring to the GS60s?

No, no, just making a general comment about how some speakers can initially impress you and then when the honeymoon is over, they become too much of a good thing. Like a speaker with boosted treble that gives the illusion of added detail. The GS60's could be a *little* edgy, and I mean a little, but never fatiguing to these ears.

I am going to pick up a pair of RS1's for my rears.
What speaker stands do you guys recommend?

Buying big ticket items to please my wife is not my normal practice of course, it just worked out that way this time. I make a good living but I still have plenty of compromises to make.

Thanks BTW. I know that you aren't one to get into colorful subjective descriptions of the sound quality of your systems, but I hope some of what I wrote about the Platinum's rang true for you. That ribbon tweeter is something special, and the other drivers seem to be equally up to the task of matching the sound quality of the tweeter.

I always wished for the smoothness of a fabric dome with the detail of the best metal dome, but it wasn't until I heard the Platinum's that this became a reality. For that matter the detail from this tweeter exceeds the best metal tweets I have heard. That is really something worth getting excited about.

just curious, what do you use for a BD player? I've been using the new Denon DVD-3800BDCI now for about a month, this unit has un-believeable sound-quality (not to mention first-rate BD video-quality). I dream of having Platinums with this unit.

My Lexicon prepro is only HDMI 1.1, so I've been holding out for a player that decodes Dolby TruHD and DTS MA. For now I'm using a PS3, which with the latest firmware gives me the decoded hi-rez audio I need.

yeah, the Denon DVD-3800BDCI does have on-board decoding for HD audio formats, and is one of the few that passes codec's through, both, 7.1ch analog OUT's and HDMI (LPCM). I know there are a few MC-12 users on the DVD-3800BDCI thread.

I considered the Denon, (I'm a long time Denon fan) but I'm also waiting for a player with the final BD 2.0 profile. I basically want it to do everything so I don't have to replace the damn thing a few months after I buy one. I'll probably wait until Sony updates their ES player. The PS3 does all I need, but I don't like having to use a game controller as a remote. No good for the wife either. Too confusing.

Buy the blu ray remote for the ps3?

I believe that remote is bluetooth, no? I need a standard IR remote so I can add it's functions to my Pronto touch-screen universal. But thanks for the recommendation.

The UPS man delivered my speakers today (GS60/20/LCR). I rearranged my whole room and have them setup in a way I think I will remain pleased with. Now for the break-in to begin. I have to say, they are better out of the box than I anticipated. I don't even want to hear a pair of Platinums. Ever. I cannot remember the last time I was so excited to listen to well known albums twice in a row. I suppose it was around the time I got my 9i's. I have done my upgrading all wrong. Got the new Onkyo PR-SC885 on Monday and all new speakers on Friday. The new pre/pro isn't even broken in yet, lol. And now I want an SACD player. And IC's. And a new TV console. This is all evil.

I really need to get a bluray in the PS3 with DTS MA or DD TruHd so I can play around with some uncompressed movie soundtracks. Right now, I am just loving having Cat Power in the room with me. Really, I am sure the RS series has improved on my 9i, but these GS's are pretty big step forward IMO. Diminishing returns are in full swing now. Oh and I like the Santos Rosewood more every time I look at it.

As far as sonics, I will certainly post more after a some break-in time, but even now their handling of voices is incredible, as is their transparency, midrange, detail, midrange, ability to play brilliantly at every sound level I have tried. Did I mention their midrange? The size of soundstage is almost unreal, to the point I have already had my cousin ask me why I play cd's through 3-channel DSP. Which of course I don't. Case in point, right now I couldn't be happier. Ok, maybe with Plats I would be happier, but I already feel like I am providing my GS series with a mediocre front end... I would have to take a 2nd mortgage out to provide the Plats with a worthy front.

Edit: Tim, first off GRATZ on the Plats. Second, you are correct. The PS3 remote is bluetooth. So, you would not be able to program it to your universal remote.

Tim, congratulations on your platinum purchase..can't wait to hear your detailed review of them..
I have found myself a good deal on an used martin logan depth and will probably look to upgrade from silver to gold in 2nd half this year..
when using w/ subwoofer, do you think the difference between gs20 and gs60 will still be significant?

As far as PS3, there are a few IR to BT receivers out there that will allow you to use your universal remote w/ PS3..

Grenamc -

Either you are a night owl like me or you decided to get up in the middle of the night to write that post.

I'm thrilled for you! You sound like you are really beside yourself with your new GS's, as you should be. That's what this hobby is all about.

How do you like them compared to your MK's? I'm sure I don't need to ask that based on your description of the sound, but it would be interesting to hear where you felt the largest improvements were gained.

Oh, and as tempting as it might be, if the Platinums show up on your dealers floor, do not listen to them. It's like looking into the eyes of God. OK, that's a bit much, just having some fun.

Enjoy the GS's, it really doesn't get much better than those unless you spend a lot more, and even that is no guarantee.

Thanks for the congrats and thanks for the links. I thought I had heard something about devices like those.

No, I do not think there would be much difference at all by going with the GS20's instead of the GS60's if you are crossing over to a sub. The only difference would be that you could play the GS60's a bit louder, not much though.

You should love that sub. From what I have heard, it is very tight and articulate.
