It's been a few months, but we've been enjoying our Monitor Audio speakers very much in a 7.1 configuration for our home theater. I picked up the majority from Audiogon.

I am very happy with these speakers!

RS6 Fronts
RSLCR center
RSFX surrounds
RSFX rears
SVS PC-13 Ultra subwoofer

On vacation this week so I treated myself to a stop at a local shop yesterday. I knew this would get me in trouble. Auditioned some speakers and liked what I heard from a pair of BR6's, BRLCR center, and BR2's for the rear. They're on sale until 1/4 so I might pull the rigger if I get approval form the minister of finance (wife). I'll be driving them with a Pio Elite 84 in a 2700 cf family room that's open on one end to the kitchen.

One question I have is how good are MA subs, BRW10, compared to HSU, ed, Epic in the $500 range?

If anyone is interested in a pr. of GS20's, let me know.

Wanna trade for some nice Aerial Acoustics 7B's? We'll swap in Portland.

Mhm... you actually bumped an owner's thread. I've never seen that before

Well I don't really have anything new to report about my system besides the fact that the center is now off the ground.

Would also like to note my finding of a new musician that has some fantastic sound CDs out. Jake Shimabukuro is a fantastic ukulele player. His material really shines with my MA's tweeters.

Hey guys - I'm hoping someone could help me with a (probably boring) GSFX placement question!

I'll be using 4x GSFXs as sides and rears, but i'm not sure where exactly to position them on the wall.

From various guides i've read, the general message has been 'put them high up', which is do-able (see the speakers in red). But i'm wondering if having them that close to the corner of the ceiling, will have adverse affects on the sound? If that's the case, then I guess the blue position would be better?

If I did put them in the red position (which is ideally where i'd like them - out of the way) - will the same height for the sides be okay?

I also read about the manual being wrong in terms of what switches to (on page 136) can anyone confirm if the manual is actually wrong?!

Oh and last question! I haven't seen it mentioned - but how will the 12v trigger work with my Onkyo 906?

Appreciate any feedback, here's a lovely diagram!

EDIT: Oops, sorry - didn't realise how big that was!

Guys, if anyone of you could spare the time to answer me, I would be very grateful!

I currently own a pair of Mission m35i and a NAD C325BEE. I love the deep punchy, precise bass but I dont know what to say about the mids and highs. the sound is very dark and lacks "something". I had the opportunity to listen to RS6 which sounded more to my taste but once i cranked the volume passed hour 9, the bass was clearly much less powerful than the one M35i is capable of. I didn't have the chance to listen to RS8 and I was wondering if the RS8 has a more powerful bass than Rs6 (much more, not just a slight extension). MA has a more bright and open sound than Mission, however it lacks the lows pretty much. Should I upgrade my speakers to RS8? I cannot listen the RS8, the dealer said I would have to purchase them blindly, they only get imported if customers pay in advanced.

Thank you so much!

Mr. Pooper -

Surrounds should be placed 2 - 3 feet above seated ear height, so I would base your decision on that. It seems to me that the #1 position is too high, but if you go that route, run the rears in monopole mode since they will be close to the side walls. For that matter, I would run them monopole regardless of their position on the back wall.

I used to own the GSFXs, but for the life of me I can't remember if there was a problem with description of the config switches in the manual. I would send an e-mail directly to MA on that one.

I can't tell you how the 12V trigger would work with the Onkyo, or if it will work at all, but the use of that trigger is meant to automatically switch the config of the speaker from mono to dipole depending on the surround mode. I would consult the user manual for the Onkyo to see if it supports this feature. Not many AVR's do.

Bass sound quality is very dependent on speaker placement and listening position. If you aren't getting the bass you desire from any speaker, try placing it closer to the nearby walls, or moving the listening position forward or back before judging the character of the bass.

Unfortunately, no one can tell you if the RS8 will give you what you want in terms of bass power, since we don't know what the Missions sound like in your room.

Can you bring the RS6's home for an audition to see how they compare to the missions when they are in the same location as the missions?

If i did put the rears at that height (close to the ceiling), will it be okay to put the sides at the same height? (do the sides 'have' to be at the same height - or can they be lower?)

I think they should all be the same height so that there is no discontinuity as sounds travel from the sides to the back. If you place the four surrounds too high though and the surround field from front to back will sound tilted up in the rear. If you can, I suggest buying / renting some adjustable pro audio speaker stands to temporarily place the surrounds at various heights and positions to see what sounds best before mounting them permanently.

Something like these:

You'll have to makeshift a platform for the speakers to sit on though.

This is is what I did and it will save you a lot of heartache when things possibly don't sound as good as you had hoped.

Good idea! I might just get 4 friends to hold them in place while I audition them! lol

I've actually been looking at the Dolby recommendation... they say 2-3' above ear level... but then i looked at the THX recommendations.. and they say something totally different (they talk about having the rear speakers right next to each other...)

ohh and no one mentions dipole speakers! lol arghhhhhhhhh

Hi friends, in the lookout to setup a small speaker sys for my bedroom. Looking for a mini reciever (nothing fancy) + a couple of small speakers to listen to some light music during the night. Suggestions ?

I own a pair of R270's (main) and looking at buying a center - RS250 for my center.. that's my HT setup.

Ok, guys, I am back, but this time with an issue..

My current setup:
GS10s
Denon 988
Oppo 980H

Ok, this is my first real audio setup, so I am not really familiar with the sound that comes out from the speakers .. Have couple questions though.

Do I suppose to get equal amount of sound from both speakers? What I mean is that on certain songs, I get some audio scenes only from one speaker, while I get the rest sound from another speaker.

A second issue with Celine Dion SACD. I am not sure what to blame, but for instance, playing the song "My Heart Will Go On" I get the bass and treble only from the right speaker. It looks like zero bass coming from the left, or only little. I went kinda crazy trying to figure this out, so I swapped speaker wires. I plugged the right speaker wire to a left speaker terminal on the receiver, and left to right. The bass and treble came to the left side.. I don't really understand what is the cause here. I listen to music in pure direct mode, so all the processing is off.

Thanks!

Since the problem traveled to the other speaker when you switched, it is either a problem with the Denon or the oppo, or possibly this is how the song was recorded (not as likely). Sounds like you bought this gear recently, so I would go to the dealer and ask to borrow another Denon, or bring yours in for them to check out.

Thank you hifisponge.

ps. ive compared my M35i with Rs6 in the dealer's demo room. Mission has a much more powerful bass but MA has a much more open bright sound. If RS8 would have the same open sound and the power of the mission bass, I would be sold!

You may be able to get the bass closer to your liking by placing the RS6 closer to nearby walls than the Mission. Consider going back to the dealer and playing with the position of the RS6. The RS8 will certainly play lower than the RS6, but I can't say whether it will have the power you seek.

Best of luck.

I am in the process of getting some rear channels to mate with my setup. I run GS20 + GS LCR (black piano lacquer) on an Onkyo 875.

I first thought of going with the BRFX (Don't watch that many movies...) but when I told my W about the fact that you hang them on the wall and high up she said that she didn't want them on our livingroom walls. Hmm...

So, I am considering Radius 90, in Black Piano they should look pretty sweet paired with the rest of the setup. The Radius-line is inferioer to the GS of course, but will the difference be to big for them to run together smoothly? Also, are the Radius HD 90s delivered with wall mounts, and are there any stands available for them? I have a pair, but the top-plate is bigger than the Radius speakers

The R90's come with wall brackets. As far as performance, if your wife won't let you do what you want, the R90's may be your only option.

I will get the 90s in black finish, but have one question; How far can you turn the speakers sideways, I have to hang them on the back walls to the side of mye listening position and then angle them towards sweetspot, preferably up to 90 degrees...
The brackets are like a ball and socket design. The mounting plate that attaches to the wall can be installed in any direction so you'll be fine.

Well, I meant when the speaker is mounted, how far you can turn it from "straight"-forward-position.

Here is a really basic sketchup of the placement I am considering.

Audiophile82 -

If that is where you want to place your rears, I suggest going with the floorstands for the R90's.

http://www.monitoraudiousa.com/produ...e=4&product=32

Or get the R270 floorstanders.

I have 2 R270's.. they are really good !!.. crisp ..very nice mid.. have a velodyne as a make shift sub until I get enough $ down the road to get a MA sub.

I've had this MA Radius system for a while now, but I don't know that I have ever posted pics of it. This is my second system that I use just for gaming.
