I'm definitely listening to distortion based on my room size, as well. I've decided to go with a Crown XLS series amp and see what happens. Hate the idea of paying a lot of money for a hi-fi amp (certainly Emotiva is at a great price point), as well as, hate the big boxes with the huge heat sinks. I'm going to take a chance with an 11 pound pro amp and see what happens. Worst case scenario is you return the amp before 30 days are up, for a full refund (minus shipping). Maybe I'll learn a lesson here.
the heat output on Emotiva amps is very minimal
Crown puts out way more heat , they are different class of amps between the two , Each class of amp will have their own + & - on different issues
Emo's are famous for running very cool , mine don't even get warm to the touch after a all day session of heavy movie watching . I like my action movies loud
Those Crowns are not silent ,they have a fan & they do have a higher noise to signal ratio . There are reports of hiss on the Crown's (they are a Pro amp not intended for HT use) and the voltage for the input signal is very different in Pro use than a home use amp (source voltage) .
but to be fair there are reports of hiss on the XPA-3's as well , On the Emo's most hiss is from the upstream issues , if the up-stream units have no hiss then a Emo that has a hiss then it is defective .
go back in this thread there are a few guys who got the Crowns & didn't like them , as well those who did .
trade offs are the of game .
