I read a article many years ago where PWK was quoted that the longer the stroke on a woofer the more chances of distortion can occur. Radius surrounds be it foam or rubber allow a longer stroke
by design... all my subs are NOT pleated. A pleated surround will help hold the paper cone "straight" during the stroke. IMHO better then a radius rubber or foam surround when used with a smaller magnet. But larger voice coils and huge magnets off set this
but require a more powerful amp to drive them. Opps My BAD on this post you quoted.... I forgot "foam looking radiused".... surrounds as my first post about these two different surrounds last week was more detailed in my script. As my point was in the design vs distortion in my first post about this topic. Thanks for the info on the rubber Not foam on my non pleated Klipsch. I feel better knowing this.
My real point was in the design of the two different surrounds...... I guess I still like old school pleated that don't require a huge amp to drive them. I use have a McIntosh tube amp 25WPC that would
play my Cornwalls as loud as a my Yamaha A1000 amp or my AVR for that matter. My RF-7 I sold never sounded like they do now at my neighbors home with a 250 WPC amp on them.
Glad to know my RS3-II are rubber and not foam. My Cerwin Vegas are radiused surrounds (don't know if foam or rubber) my late Brother had Bose 901 (same design surround on the woofers) new back in the day and his son just spent
a lot of money having them all repaired. These two NON pleated woofers that have to be repaired were another reason why I like pleated better. I am sure there are exceptions to this as rubber should last longer...hope so as I have few of them now..... jus sayin what I have experienced and what I have read about the two different designs of surrounds..
