What I love the most about those is the number of drivers. What are they 4-way? 5-way? The missile-bay look of the bass ports is awesome too. I bet they have real "subwoofer-style" bass!

"I also do not think that dinky throw rug on the floor will justify as "room acoustics" for speakers like that. LOL"

Actually Mike because of their controlled directivity horn speakers may need less room treatment then direct radiators, depending on the pattern chosen for the horns. Often floor and sidewall treatment isn't needed at all, only some furniture and some rear wall treatment.

I don't get what's so ugly about the JBLs you started the thread with. They're studio monitors and completely functional as such. I presume you know what an acoustic lens is?
Who cares about the functionality, but come on, anything that looks like "Butt Cheeks" pointed at you is still funny and ugly... even if they do sound really good.

On the first point you are probably correct as I have no real love for horn sounds in a home but felt it funny to point it out anyway.

On the second point I never made any JBL posts that I can remember so were you referring to my posts on the Klipsch monitors? If so, I was pointing out how ugly they would be in a home and possible "wife" reactions. Its a Ugly speaker post and all in good fun so a AWSOME sounding speaker may still make it in here but we are simply having fun with looks is all. I guess I never really did like the sound from Klipsch speakers so I did poke some fun by referencing them as ear bleeders. Then again, I should not have made that comment about sound, so I am SORRY it may have upset you or anyone else. However, the "wife reaction" to having them in the living room would STILL BE FUNNY to me and perhaps a few others.

If I made one person have a laugh then I feel good about it, I have no intentions to offend anyone hopefully in here or to turn this into a technical war on a design. Even those Ugly Bose speakers from way back in the 80ties may have sounded great, but they still look like a AA defense battery and having fun with the looks is all.

Acoustic lens is like an optical lens as it will channel or direct sound, like a optical lens will channel or direct light. Works great when done right, but may still look silly. Now, I am no expert on designs like this but I do assume it will greatly enhance the db output as well and why it's used in pro applications.

Now, on that note I will not get into any technical battles in here, I hope we can all find a laugh out of this thread without hurting anyone in the process.

Be well,
Mike

Mike----Well I think the monitors (JBLs) in your first post that started the thread look good because the form is dictated by the function with very little thought given to styling. I like the look of machinery and have always thought those slatted JBL lenses looked cool, same with the potato-masher JBL lenses. And it helps that those JBL horn-lens-drivers sound very good, to me anyway.

To me things that are ugly are usually things that are overdone or have form that has little to do with function.

Of course in matters of taste there's no right or wrong, only opinion.

Kind Regards

Yes, there are plenty of threads for technical discussion. This one is just for fun.

Thanks for the reply Tom... I was looking at the pic again and I think you are right, they may be JBL's. the picture is too low detail to read the badge on the face, but looks like it may be a JBL. I found them on Ebay and the guy never said the brand but i thought they were ugly. There is lots of cool ugly stuff on Ebay, but I am jealous that ChrisWiggles has found some really cool stuff elsewhere.... I need to find his sources. lol

On that note... check out these really vintage JBL speakers.... My grandfather would be proud if I got these I bet. Looks like the mid-late 50ties perhaps?

Be well,
Mike

I went back and looked at that first post again. Oh, yes, those things are hideous (that's what grilles are for!)
Virtually everything on the site is hideous IMHO.

LOL.... Its like looking at a naked man..... Please cover it up!

Some speakers are like a beautiful woman, and we can't resist taking off that little sexy black dress, oh i mean grille.

Enjoy!

If I were Captain Nemo, I would definitely want a pair of Ellipticas for the Nautilus.

I agree, everything on that exoticaudio site is qualified for this thread.

I apparently have lead a sheltered life. I never knew that there were so many hideous speaker designs out there.

I was better off not knowing.

That's true I guess, I can hardly notice its even there......
They may look funny, but the avantgarde speakers have certain qualities that can't be found in almost any other speakers. And, a lot of people really like the retro look. As a matter of fact, some people buy them just for their looks

Why does that matter? I thought audiophiles judged the quality of a speaker by what it looks like.

My mistake, I forgot that sound doesn't matter

I just want to know, are the Avantgarde HORN speakers? I couldn't tell by looking!?! Or, am I looking at an episode of the Simpsons? I haven't seen candy apple red since the 60's. Dennis

That thing uses the same jbl horn lens that's on my JBL 4675's I just finished refurbing. I'm totally pleased with how they turned out and to me...they sound excellent. In fact, I replaced my Klipsch RF-7's with the JBL's.
