I don't believe you use your mini while it is charged. You probably use it during the day and charge it at night. A year for a Li-ion battery that needs recharge frequently is not uncommon. And as it is always the case, most teches are clueless when it comes to charging Li-ion batteries. You have a few hundred fully recharge cycles per battery.

I don't know how old your Compaq laptop is. Old laptops didn't use Li-ion. I have quite a few laptops at home and left plugged in 24/7. Some are 3~4 years and some are even older. Some other components start to falling apart but battery on those are still strong.
