Upconverting via COmponent?

Any DVD players do this? I have a high def projector that is Component only.

The players worth consideration in my opinion that upconvert all DVDs over component:

Zenith DVB318 or clone LG DV7832 with older firmware.
NeuNeo HVD2081 and Helios HVD2085.
Samsung DVD-HD841, HD850, HD941 and HD950 requires simple remote control hack.
LG LDA-511, LDA-531, DVB418. May require a firmware update then hack by remote to allow component upconversion.

I have the NeuNeo HVD2081, Samsung DVD-HD950, LG DVB418 and Zenith DVB318. The DVD-HD950 is the best for 720p and DVB418 best for 1080i in my opinion. If your display is adversely affected by the macroblocking enhancement problem associated with players using Faroudja FLI23xx chips such as the Samsung DVD-HD941, LG DVB418 and Zenith DVB318, you would want to avoid them. The AVSForum should have someone using your display that can offer an opinion on the macroblocking issue. Still, the only way to tell for sure is to try the players to determine your opinion of the best one. The Samsung players often have a skewed picture at 1080i over component, I know my HD950 does with many DVDs.

I should mention, I have read that Samsung no longer has the remote hack with 2006 build DVD-HD850 and HD950 players. The specific formats and regions you want to play will have an impact on your choice as well.

True, I just copied my answer from one and pasted it here basically.

I scrolled down from your thread and here is another one on the same topic on the same page. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=680513 With the release of HD DVD, I haven't spent much time in the SD forum, glad to know this topic still comes up a couple times each week. ;)

I have a 720p projector that only has VGA and Component inputs, would it still work or does it require a Dvi input?

Sure. List your model number and it is likely someone has used an upscaling DVD player with your specific model. I use an upscaling player over component with my Panasonic PT-L500U 720p LCD projector. If you mean would the new HD DVD player work with your projector, yes but most DVD's could not be upscaled over component. All HD DVD's released yet could.

Yes, if that projector accepts a 720p input over component. I can only assume it does since I have no experience with it. I know my 720p LCD projector does. If it does, all of the players I mention would work. I don't like the Zenith DVB318 at 720p, but the others I own are affordable and work well in my opinion.

What about the Samsung DVD-HD860 which you did not mention, though I think may be a 2006 model. Anyways, does this upconvert over component?

I am not aware of a way to make that player upconvert over component. It may be that Samsung has stopped providing for hacks to allow component upscaling. I listed the players I thought would work best, but if you want to come back and ask about every player not on the list, that will take some time. Oppo has a new player allegedly ready for release that has been described as having component upscaling but I don't know the timing of the release.

No Sony player has been shown to upscale over component as far as I know. I like the picture over HDMI with these new Sony players.

Why not try the Toshiba SD-V592? It was made by LG so all the remote hacks work perfectly. Upconversion over component looks fine. It also has a good video dac (12 bit/108 mhz) and audio dac (24 bit/192 mhz). Upconversion over HDMI uses the Genesis FLI2301 on a daughter board.

The latest firmware is available here:

It also is a DVD/VCR combo so you have the added benefit of a good VCR.

Plenty available on Ebay refurbished or new starting at about $69.

I just picked up the LG a511 and indeed it does upconvert on my Sharp 10x to 720p, unfortunately its giving me an error on most of my DVds and seems to be a lemon. Back to circuit city I go.

HDCP free should appear briefly. If the HD850 is a 2006 build, the hack may not be possible.
