first post for me!
I spent the last, oh I don't know, months (feels like years) researching what to get. The last time I bought a new tv was when s-video was THE thing (to give a frame of reference to how outdated I am with television technology). I had a lot of learning to do before making an educated decision.
Many-a-trip to best buy, cc, video only, sony stores, etc and many-an-annoyed employee later I decided I wanted a sony panel..but which one? again, I weighed what was important to me and the xbr series was it. I waited just long enough and noticed the xbr2/3 hit the wild..sweet! What I was reading about them offered exactly what I wanted, sans the pricetag.
The next part was the tough part...convincing my better half that she wants a new tv too. That was actually easier than I thought...when we brought our Wii home (make it sound like a new born) the first thing she said was "we need a bigger tv". There was the in!
So I was ready to pull the trigger and suddenly there was clouding being reported. what to do..what to do.
I was thinking about going 46" but after measuring where the set will be going, 40" was the ticket. The fact that no 40" sets were being reported as cloudy didn't hurt that decision either! Of course, I see a few reported but not as many as the 46"..or well, not as many are coming forward anyways...
I went back and forth over this. I found a wicked deal on a mail order for the 40xbr2 but was scared about how to return this set if/when it came funked. I took a trip down to video only and after some bargaining and whatnot (more on the whatnot to come) they met the online price and the set was mine. Of course, it is backordered but they expect it in a week or so.
I printed off a couple of the pics of the cloudy issues people were reporting. So thanks to everyone who took the time to let us see what that looks like!! The sales guy told me that nobody had heard of that problem, but the customers looking at the 46" xbr2 started to pay attention to what I was saying.
I showed him the pictures (and the other customers too) and he whispered to me "yeah another customer was concerned about that too" and said he would be right back. Now he left me alone with the other customers and I answered all their questions as best I could based off the hundreds and hundreds of pages/posts I have read here (thanks again for all that info...the other customers thank you too!). He came back and whispered a price in my ear (which I cannot disclose as the rules don't allow it) and the deal was made...I assume his mgr just wanted to sell a set and get me outta the store.
Long story short...someone isn't being completely honest about this issue with the sets. I had them screw with the settings on the 46" and 40" xbr2s they had on display (in a dark display room) and there was no clouding. I checked the manuf dates on the sets and they were all from Oct except one 46" which was from Aug.
Whatever though. Hopefully in a week's time, I will have the set home, and there will be clouds to block my views...if not, well I have 30 days to bring that puppy back and I plan to exercise that right until I get the set right. It is all of 7 miles away so well, I don't mind being that store's pain in the arse
