Big Mouth In DC's beautiful black/grey theater - Page 49

Big,

My condolences to your sister, you, and your family. It is always tough going in after loosing a family member and helping "pick up the pieces".

I'm not familiar with the X-10 automation, but by the application photo it looks less than user friendly. I see why your sister is asking for some help in simplifying.

Regards,

RTROSE

I never get sick of looking at your theater. Simply awesome

Had to revisit your thread today now that I'm thinking about the possibility of an open concept theater in the next house
post #1444 of 1578
Funny, I'm thinking about a dedicated room in my next house.

Gee, I'm thinking about never moving again

I think they both have their purpose...I like the kitchen space right there when I need a "pop" or any other mixed beverage, sometimes sitting with the computer at the counter while watching something is nice, way better than sitting on the couch with the thing, but other times I do think about a completely enclosed space and what it would be like to have sound isolation and all so i can watch movies late at night when the wife goes to sleep...

I think they both have their place. I am still enjoying my open design, but every now and then think about the what ifs...but never regret.

I had the same thoughts going in my mind, so I set up both...

In my main living area, I removed the walls between the living room, kitchen and dining room, so that entire end of the house is an open concept, because it has many windows I carefully positioned a 58" Plasma TV with a 5.1 surround system to enjoy while we are entertaining friends or enjoying an evening by ourselves.

But if we are in the mood for a serious theatre experience we head downstairs to a dedicated room with a 7.1 (soon to be 9.1) sound system, leather recliners and a 120" wide cinemascope screen.

I sit in my theater depressed that I haven't finished ALL the other projects on my list. I was out shopping for tile yesterday for my basement bathroom and the search continues today. I also have some speaker drivers on hand and in the mail for a multiple sub building project.

Thanks for the feedback.

WOW! I can't believe this thread is still live...

It's been several years since I started coming here. I built my first theater from this forum and it's based on BIGmouthinDC theater and this thread.

He even sent me the samples to go by.

I wanna just say thank you BIGmouthinDC for everything and for providing us with great stuff.

I'll post some pix here soon on my theater. It's not like BIGmouthinDC but the color scheme is the same ;-)

Oh and before I go, this theater to me is the hottest one I've ever seen ;-)

Take care guys,
Joey

Thanks, there have been days when I can't believe I'm still alive.

I have some big, speaker building projects coming up, and I've actually started to plan the tiling of the basement bath/spa. Of course pictures and commentary to follow.

Hang in there, hopefully Tom will finish soon and then you can go and see your maker in the knowledge that you have witnessed a true miracle.

But don't be surprised if you learn that even your Maker had been Loganed ...

Actually I'm interested in finding out if it is true that Heaven and Hell are separated by double wall construction with Triple DW and GG and if they built backer boxes for the outlets.

What did you decide for subwoofers? Are you going to build the THT?
I have the drivers ordered for a couple THT LPs. I also have the drivers for a design of my own (based on the work of others) called the Buttzooka. Stay tuned.

Look forward to seeing some of them subs

Hey Big, a friend and I are doing a project for our high school economics class: setting up a company that builds home theaters and possibly automates homes.
We were wondering if we could use pictures of your [amazing] theater and basement-kitchen as examples and/or as "previous work."
Big, I assume you are aware that the DIY DTS10 kit is being offered again. I wonder if you could hardly build anything in its performance range cheaper? Something to consider.

Actually I have considered it. Last time I checked there wasn't enough room behind my screen wall with my L/C/R where they are. I may have to get out my tape measure and check again. I also considered building a couple of TH-SPUD clones based on the bootleg plans that are out there, but even they were too big.

I think that you should build it based on the name alone. As always if you build it, they will come, no er ah I mean it will be top notch and be beyond expectations.

Glad I check BIG's thread occationally...

I was drooling over the DTS-10 kit the last time they offered it. I've love to build one and I managed to even get tentative approval from the wife with the only stipulation that I have to sell the PC13-Ultra.

With 18" behind my screen wall, it could just work.

Hmm....

Where you gonna put your LCRs? Maybe you've already thought that out, but the DST-10 is 44" tall, so might present some problems. Hey, unless you bolt a pair to the ceiling behind the screen? Then the LCRs could clear under them.

Double hmm....at 285 lbs each though, not sure that would be such a good idea! lol

If you get a wide enough screen then you can fit the L,C,R between them!

I figure this should work (DTS)(L)(C)(R)(DTS)
Mine are configured (L) (DTS) (C) (DTS) (R). My LCR are each 24" wide and it all fits in a 17' wide space with a little breathing room. You could also stack DTS cabinets if braced well.
