) disappointment in the DMR-EH55 is that it does not maintain the correct aspect ratio for 16X9 material recorded from my HDTV receiver. The videos from these sources are always recorded in 4X3 aspect ratio, which squeezes the picture horizontally. This is the case regardless of the "Enable High Speed Mode" being set to On or Off, see pg. 8
of the manual. Has anyone had better results recording 16X9 material onto the HDD?
I like to record movies and documentaries from the D* HD channels. In order to correct the aspect ratio for archived DVDs, I have to do the following;
1. I edit out commercials and other unwanted stuff on the Eh55's HDD and then copy the video to a DVD-R/W disk.
2. Using my PC, I then copy the entire DVD to a new folder (named for its content) onto the PC's hard drive.
3. Then, I use IFOEDIT to edit (correct) the Aspect Ratio Flag to 16X9 in the IFO files.
4. Finally, I burn the corrected folder using to a DVD+R (DL) disk, with IMGBURN.
The resultant DVD plays back on the EH55 in the correct 16X9 aspect ratio and the picture quality is excellent. These recordings are of course not HD, just good quality SD.
Sadly, there is no way to change the aspect ratio of titles on the HDD of the'EH55. If you want, you can re-copy them back to the HDD after correcting them on a DVD. This is a lot of steps for something that should have been included in the design of the DMR-EH55, in the first place. Their manual seems to say it does?
