I have my room completed now, finally finished it this past weekend.
The projector is ceiling mounted projecting from 10.5 feet back onto a 96" diagonal gray screen. The ceiling is about 11 feet high in the middle of the room where the the projector is mounted. I am sitting under and behind the projector which drops from the ceiling beam to about 7 feet off the floor. My seating is just over 12 feet back from the screen.
I am using an Oppo DVD player up-converting to 1080i over a 35 foot Better Cables DVI to HDMI cable, with an adapter on the projector side. I am also using Straight Wires 35 foot Silver Link component cables for gamming, standard TV and Satellite HDTV.
First the good news:
The image it produces is jaw dropping!! Better than I had hoped and better than any of my previous projectors both DLP and LCD. Image is sharp, gray scale almost perfect, with no colouring on the edges of the screen. Colour saturation is Wow and shadow detail is very good. I smile and want to cry(with joy) every time I watch it. I have so far only used Get Gray to set brightness and contrast, but that has made a big difference already. I will not use Colorfacts to calibrate it as this is not my replacement unit yet . I am still awaiting it's delivery, but it is closer to me now, and should have it any day. So I will wait for it before I invest the time to totally calibrate it and post my results.
Projector noise is not so bad in low mode at all, and not noticeable over other room noise like the air conditioner or fan. In bright mode a fair bit louder, but like I suspected I will not need to use that mode as it produces plenty of brightness in low mode on my screen. I can not wait to see what the numbers are like with Colorfacts, I think I will see 12+FL'S from this projector when calibrated!!
Now the bad news:
I have noticed when watching a movie in 1080i it will looking fine and then every once in awhile produce a twitch or flash on the screen. I have tried different movies to rule that out as a potential problem and all have done same thing. I think there is slight sync problem here as when running in 720p I do not get this same result and the image remains stable. I like 720p but the image seems to look and fit the screen better in 1080i. It may also be a copy protection encoding error, I will check out some of my burnt archive movies to test this theory out. I will be investigating the cables tonight and also looking for a possible setting in the Oppo or the projector to fix this problem. Not sure which it is or even if it may be my long run of cable, but 720p is fine so not convinced it's the cables fault. I will also call Oppo and Optoma tomorrow to get their take on it.
Tom do you have any comments on this issue or a possible solution?
Will post pictures of my new room, some screen shots and give calibrated settings and results once my new projector arrives. Can not wait as this projector is every thing I have hoped for and more so far!!
