Myself and others asked for this a while back. Would be really useful and allow those of us with DVI inputs that accept Component color to achieve a better picture.

Hey all, are there any other links for the 1.2 upgrade? I have tried the site published here, but it is infinitely slow and ultimately ends up stopping.

I was able to get the 1.3 but considering I don't have the RCA logo I am thinking I shouldn't use that one. Am I wrong?

Oh yeah, I have the HD-XA1 and am unable to connect via the Ethernet connection which is why I am asking. Plus Toshiba has told me I have 7-10 days to wait for the disc and I don't want to wait.

Are all consumer electronics companies this bad? I called Toshiba support because my unit is stuck at 'WELCOME' after the update. The person kept grilling me as to why I updated the firmware. If they didn't want me to update it, they shouldn't have added that as a feature.

After running through one troubleshooting step (unplugging the unit for 3 min), it still didn't work. I now have to fax my receipt to Toshiba with the symptoms, then wait 24-48 hours for it to get entered into the system, and THEN call back after they have read the symptoms. Meanwhile, I'm without my HD-DVD player. I guess my $500 is not paying for support. It sounds like it will be my responsibility to send it to them at my expense for them to repair it (no timeframe given if that happens for them to fix it and return it). Frankly, I feel that is unacceptable. They should cross-ship me one with a credit card as collateral at the very least.

Did you get the update directly from Toshiba?

Makes no sense to question you as to WHY you updated. If they only wanted customers with units fitting specified parameters to update, Toshiba would have stated that in the notice giving all others specific instructions not to update.

Still having problems...

Just got back from vacation and was happy to see the firmware available.
My player suffered from random freezing and pause/fast foward moments causing a loss of audio sync. After successfully installing the 1.2 software I initialized the unit and unplugged it for a few minutes.

Now when I start it up, I sometimes see horizontal lines in the image and distorted color. Pressing STOP then PLAY will fix it sometimes but not always. This did not happen before the firmware update. I ran Van Hesling to see if it made it past a scene that it usually locked up on and it still freezes there 30% of the time.

Has anyone else seen these horizontal lines in the image and color problems?

I bought this XA1 from Robert at Value Electronics. Should I return it there or send it back to Toshiba?

I'm trying to update online to 1.2, but I'm having trouble. I have my ethernet cable hooked from the back of my wifi laptop to the A1. I put it to DHCP "on" and I get this "VUP ERROR 121." What am I doing wrong?

You have to also enable the DNS server button.

Yeah, sorry, DNS is set to on as well.

You have to find the IP address of your router and manually put it in along with the gateway. I had the same problem trying to update. After I updated to V3 from I disk I tried the auto settings and they now seem to work since it states I have the latest firmware. It might be that V3 corrected the DNS connection problem that some of us have had.

Just received my player hd-a1 back from Toshiba repair in MA. Noticed that it was updated to 1.2, but all my previous settings were still active. Played Unforgiven (very repeatable freeze earlier) and it played without freezing or sound sync issues, although I did notice some very brief pauses/glitch where it would freeze before, so that is much better.

On changing resolution over DVI, I do get a couple of vertical lines on my displays blue background followed by a brief display of what I would label as white noise/static screen, like when you watch the old Twilight zone and they take over your TV After this, the display works properly.

Have not had any color problems but I have had trouble placing a standard DVD in the player while the resolution is set to 1080i, I get the dreaded HDMI 1.0 error. Prior to upgrading I could just press play and it would function, now pressing play only results in the same HDMI error. I must eject the disc, change resolutions setting, then re-insert the disc and it will play at a lower resolution. I have not played with this enough to know if it is always repeatable.

More experimentation with STD DVD's seem to indicate that with version 1.2 I now have more timing issues with HDMI handshake, More than 1.0 at least. Sometimes it works while most times it doesn't. Arrghh!

So I guess I'll take the good with the bad, and hope another update is in the works.

So then even sending it in for repair doesnt fix the problems...
Wonderful..

Maybe I'll be able to exchange it.
Thanks for your input!

The peeps that are having these issues, are you trying to go through your audio receiver first then the tv or just straight from the HD DVD box to the TV?

I have the same issue. -edit- Do you have any equipment hooked up to your tv or a/v receiver? You might want to try unplugging them, then try turning on the player.

MY HD-A1 came with 1.2 already loaded. It's connected straight to my 72HM195 via HDMI and COMPOSITE (for troubleshooting purposes). I'm connected to my receiver using a fiber connection(no 5.1 analog inputs on my receiver). Finally, I also have an Adelphia motorola HD PVR unit hooked up to my tv with HDMI as well.

What I did to get the unit working (every time I boot) is to first unhook the hdmi cable until I get the 1081i display after the welcome message on the hd-dvd player display, then I hook up the cable again and I'm good until I turn of the tv, at which time I have to unhook the cable again. At least I can get it to work though.

Finally got internet connection working with player and did firmware upgrade online. Everyhting went fine but now when I have no disc player, or set-up menu on screen, or anything other than disc playing I have a high pitch tone over audio. I'm using HDMI to Panny 42" Plasma, anyone else have this issue?
After the update it switches back to component output. Hit the video output button to switch it back to HDMI output. Don't know what the high pitch tone is all about though.

1- The player locks up pretty much all the time.
2- When I can get it to boot, only one out of 15 attempts am I able to get into the setup page. I attempted to do an update, but so far it cannot find my internet connection.
3- If I put in an HD-DVD (I tried Serenity) the player just locks up and does nothing. Tried this about 7 times The front of the player would say HDDVD, but it would just sit there and not respond to any buttons either on the remote of the unit itself. I would wind up having to hold the power button down for 10 seconds to get the unit to shut down.
4- If I put in an SD-DVD then the player loads it and shows it in a tiny window but correct proportions if the player is set to 480p (I am using HDMI out). If the player is set to 720p I get a vertical strip of about 25% of the image centered slightly off-center to the right. If I set the player to 1080i I get a sliver about 15% of the width of the normal picture also off-set to the right.
5- With this SD-DVD I get audio over the HDMI connection if I have 480p selected, I get no audio at 720p or 1080i.
6- When I attempt to use the menus in setup, I select 480p or 720p I do not get any image at all with the setup menu I only get an image at 1080i.

I am currently attempting to update the firmware, but having issues getting the DVD player to connect to my modem through my router. I have selected DHCP ON and DNS ON and put the address of the router into the window without success even though my laptop can automatically pull an IP address from the same cable. I have also tried it with DHCP selected to off and assigned the player a static IP address within the range of the router also without success.

So far I hate to say it, but this thing is an absolute P.O.S. as it currently stands!

I know others have had good luck and I am terribly envious of them!

Well after the 47th attempt I finally go the unit to find the router and start an update cycle... my unit came with firmware 1.0. After it finishes I will do the power down, power up, re-initialize and see if that helps anything... I have "high" hopes, but then.... I think where there is manure there must be a Pony!

First I would not use the hdmi output (maybe you have problems there) and set the player up using the component video until I got it updated. Now if you can't figure out how to get the player connected to your LAN then just look in the HD DVD players forum and do a search for the 1.2 firmware update http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forum...ysprune=&f=151

If you can't find a link to download the update then make a post asking for a link to it (I don't have that link). After you download the update then use nero to burn the image file to a CDR (not a CDRW) insert the disc in your player and follow the on screen instructions. This is a fantastic player and at a bargin price so don't give up on it too fast.

Well I finally got the update to start so I am hopeful that afterwards it will work much better at least if it knows what's good for it, it will straighten up and get with the program!

I need to use HDMI for several reasons... one it will give me the best picture and sound... secondly all my component inputs on my receiver are in use! I can get great picture and sound from my Sony Mega DVD changer over HDMI so I see no reason why this brand new HD-DVD player should have any issues!

I know you want to use hdmi however I was just suggesting component until you get the player updated, besides after the update the player defaults back to component video out so I didn't want you to have a heart attack when your display went belly up.

Thanks I do appreciate your help... and if I had an open component connection I might have tried it.....,

Thankfully I did read the post a bit earlier in the thread where the person mentioned that the player would default to component after the update...

Are there any other things I should be doing to get this thing playing correctly?

Curious... while I was typing the projector went to a white screen and the player had gone to just the red button light on.... I power cycled the player for 40 seconds (the red light went off at about 22) and then plugged back in... surprisingly enough the player came back at 1080i and HDMI.....?

Actually, Louis Nye's classic line from the show was "Hi Ho Steverino!". But I was laughing too!
