Honestly, I can't even tell you when the last time I played my pottery wheel eerr... turntable and they're just collecting dust. I realized that vinyl playback is just not my niche. Hence I traded in my Clearaudio Concept.
What the pottery wheel is gone eek.gif Honestly even though you know I am no fan of TT's my Brother in law swears by his since he picked up a separate line stage. Haven't heard it yet but I believe him. Since I gave away my Thorens TD160 AND albums I'm never going back - that's because I don't want to spend that kind of coin to re-purchase all of it.

Well, I happen to agree; but you're the one with the pottery wheel, lol confused.giftongue.gif

Hey George, the rpm 1.3 is not evn funtional at this time because my nephew broke the stylus.mad.gif This TT was in my secondary system but had to move it to main rig. I do need to get an mc cartridge for it sometime so I can use it when if feel like it. But for now, it's just decor! eek.giftongue.gif;D

If that's not the Clearaudio what is it? To me they all look alike LMAO!!!!

It's a Pro-Ject RPM 1.3 turntable.

Hi Dynaudio fans!
I've been cruising through the thread and really getting a kick out of some of the posts.
This is my first post. I have a set of lowly x12's that I use in my office. (Quite good sounding actually)

I don't see a place to upload pics, is this one of those sites you need several posts before you upload?

One more thing, I just picked up a pair of 160's from a dealer for a song, they came from Dynaudio and were used but are in perfect shape with full warranty.

Welcome to the thread Rob.

Just so you know, there is no such thing as a lowly Dynaudio. They don't exist. You must be thinking of another brand. wink.gif

Good point!

This is the preamp I'm using with the little x12's. I'm going to design stands in the same color scheme and also a new power amp is in the works. (tube/ss hybrid)

Welcome!

I auditioned the X12s quite extensively before buying the X16s. The X12s put many speakers to shame, even those twice in size/costing twice as much!

I can't find that Merlym amp anywhere online. Link?

Do you live in the DC area by chance?

Merlyn was a preamp I designed for an article in AudioXpress (May-2012). It was experimental with tubes and the latest semiconductors (THS4631). The design was quite successful, it is my favorite preamp, The directly heated tubes have an immediacy I don't find in many amps (Nelson Pass and Simaudio do some very good work on that). I built in my "PI" (aX August - 2012 ?) level stage which uses no carbon resistors in Merlyn. So the combination has absolutely no carbon anywhere in the drive line. If anyone wants schematics PM me and I'll be happy to pass them along. I'm working on a hybrid amp for the Focus now, the original amp was published in aX in 2010 or 2011 and it sounds good ( over 1000v/us slew rate!) but doesn't have the umph for larger drivers. I'll try to post photos when the system is done and all the stands are made (periwinkle and brass like Merlyn). I did do a Jfet amp (no tubes) for aX (class A) but it was highly experimental although it sounds very good. I hope to revamp it in later articles.
Before the x12's I ran Allison speakers from the 80's. Roy Allison was quite a remarkable guy and I spoke to him a couple of times, needless to say he knew speakers. He was in on the first AR projects. I did have a pair of AR3's from the late 60's, in fact they are still in the basement waiting for re-foaming. I always cracks me up when people say you need A LOT of power to drive acoustically suspended speakers. The AR's were about as inefficient as you could get and we were running them on David Hafler's 60 watt comp/sup output transistor configuration. If you ran them at 60 watts they would fry and we used to keep a stock of transistors just for this!
But Hafler was one of the gifted designers back then and his advancements helped make audio what it is today.

Sorry for the ramble!

Rob

Here's PI controlling a 6SN7 preamp stage.

That's some really cool lookin' stuff there, Rob.

Thank you!

Naim is good stuff, that's a real compliment!

Some people on here might wonder why with all the equipment I have (and it's a lot!) that I don't build my own speakers.

To build a really good set of speakers, I mean a really good set of top sounding speakers like Dynaudio's would mean the best transducers from people like SEAS who do make decent stuff. So let's say I spent 1k or 1.5k on components and built my own boxes and hand would my own crossovers etc. and let's say that I found they fatigued me after two or thee hours of listening. I would be out essentially the money AND time I invested. Speaker builders never make one pair of great speakers, and while all of them have been individually granted Herbert Von Karajan's ears, on his death bed no less, most of the speakers they make are products of other speaker builder's 'opinions'. Even Joe D'Appolito, who actually knows something about acoustics, gets bad press from some of these guys!

Companies that have been designing speakers for decades, Dynaudio, B&W, KEF, etc. have some very talented engineers along with state of the art sound rooms and test equipment to match. Can I make a better speaker than them, maybe by luck but probably not in a lifetime or then I could win the lottery which is about the same odds!

That's my take on speaker building. If I buy a pair of Dynaudios and don't like them for some quirky reason I have a line of people ready to buy them for good money, check Ebay if anyone thinks I'm wrong.

My amps, that's another story I have people begging me for them but I've been at it over 45 years.

Thanks, Mick!

Please tell Wilfried that he'll like my set up a whole lot more if he'd be so kind to donate a pair of Evidence Platinum to me:D

Youre right, I am whats wrong.....

hows you're 200C? Watching Raider of the Lost Ark tonight?

I thought the PQ was good, SQ was OK, but it was nice they mostly stuck with the original soundtrack from what I could tell instead of over-enhancing it like they did with Star Wars.

I'm about 30 minutes into it now. Don't know if it's the soundtrack or the speaker but it sounds small compared to my other center, most likely just need some time to get used to it.

well if you think about it, its what almost a foot less wide, has 3 less drivers, and not to mention the 2 woofers are 5.5" vs 4 - 7"s and 1 - 4" woofer. So I would think it would have to sound somewhat smaller in terms of overall output, however the Indiana Jones movies so far seem to have a somewhat weaker soundtrack. Probably not best test of the center channel to start with.

I agree that's probably not the best soundtrack to test it out with but it's new, I'll try out a more modern soundtrack on the weekend. The Avengers will be a good test for it next week as well. First time I've heard a Dyn center before, spending some time listening to it without making any comparisons is probably the best thing to do.
