Yesterday we went to see Casino Royale near Worcester where my MIL lives.

The movie was great, but the sound system was complete crap, and it is hard for me to understand how the theater's system sounds worst than my modest 15K system.

The center channel was completely muddled and even my wife, who lived and worked in the U.K., had problem understanding some of the Brotish dialog. Also, the higher frequency was also way over emphasized which could be due to improper rom treatment, it was quite fatigueing.

In short, I never thought the movie theater sound would be that bad. Or perhaps it's because that I am spoiled by Dynaudio's.

Being a cinema technician I can tell you it was probably not balanced and EQ'd correctly. Most modern cinema's when tuned correctly can sound damn good. What would you reckon the age of the cinema was ? Who was the theatre company ? Or was it an independent ?

Thanks alot yuriv. Looks like gik acoustics has what I need for a very reasonable price. Will be contacting them about what to start with.

Does anyone think that Dynaudio will debut a new speaker at 07 CES?

They are going to debut some new speakers at CES. Some of which, I think are going to be incredibly hot. Only a month to go!

It was AMC, and it couldn't have been more than 5 years old.

The sound was horrid.

So far, the only theaters that I have been to where the sound is worth a lick is the Mann Theather in Westwood, CA that is used for most movie premiers in LA. The rest ranges from bad to worst.

Realized the tweeter on one of my Focus 220s was dented in this morning. I wept bitter internal tears.

Not sure how it happened. I've been leaving the grills off, and I moved recently. Nothing happened during the move, but I have to think some tradesperson did the deed in the new house by sliding the speaker out of his way for something.

Anyway, I took some masking tape and was able to pop the dome back out. There are two tiny indentations left in it, but it's shape is 98% restored. I listened to some loud two-channel music and couldn't hear any signs of problems. As before, the speakers sound amazing.

Couple questions:

1. If I can't hear the difference, is it likely the tweeter is fine, or are the degradations just too subtle to hear without A/B testing?

2. Any idea what a Focus 220 tweeter costs and whether I can swap a fresh one in myself?

3. Does the dent up the chances of a future blow out?

Thanks all.

You should be just fine if you popped the minor dent back out and it sounds normal (the imaging).

I agree with Chris. As long as you are OK with how it sounds then it is more than likely not worth the cost of replacement. One could argue that it is in fact compromised and that it's dispersion characteristics have been affected, but in reality these are things that are difficult to actually hear unless you have a very TRAINED set of ears. TO most of us we cannot hear a difference.

Hello,

I had a chance to listen to the Contour 5.4 today, felt it was overkill for what i needed.

I am wondering what people would recommend for a Home Theater setup, in a 21x21 room. I am looking for something that is open and airy, and can give me a great sound stage for a 70" TV?

Thanks

Overkill in what way? What about the other contour models? Do you want floor standers or are you open to bookshelves? I am assuming you are going to be using a sub?

They very were nice with Music, but when it came to H/T they didn't seem that much better than some other speakers that I demo that day for half the price.

I will admit, I wasn't playing the same material, so it wasn't an apple to apple comparision.

I am looking for a floor standing speaker. The dealer didn't recommend going any lower than the 5.4 for Home Theater. Maybe I should have said that my budget was half at what I said.

Interesting observation, but if it isn't music then it's dialog and sound effects. Dialog is mostly coming from the center so your mains aren't going to matter much. So long as the speaker has a reasonable dynamic range and you have a decent sub you might be able to get away with a much lesser speaker. Music is a substantial part of a sound track so I don't understand why one wouldn't want a speaker that is suited for music. If you like Dynaudio's I would listen to the 3.4s and the focus 220's they might suit your budget better and both are fine speakers.

Also remember the higher end speakers are going to need better amplification so the cost differences don't stop with the speakers.

I am keeping my budget open to the 5K to 10K, and the dealer had a deal on the 3.4s with a center put it just above my budget.

Surely a pair of 3.4s and a sc center cost less than $10k.

If they didnt sound good with home theater then the dealer did not have them setup right. The Contour and Focus series is amazing with home theater, and for music I wouldnt recommend anything else.

The 5.4 certainly isn't too much for that size of room, which IMO is larger than the majority of peoples rooms. I will say you have a lot of things going against you in a square room, so your early reflections need to be taken care of with room treatments.

The 5.4 is easily one of the best speakers under $10K on the market, the only other worthy competitor is the Aerial Acoustics Model 9. For music I opt for the 5.4, however for HT.....that's easy....the Model 9 kicks a$$ and has a much better center channel speaker.

I have the 5.4 in one of theater rooms, which 13.5'x20' and they sound amazing. They do need to be placed out into the room 3' not to sound too boomy, though. The 5.4 doesn't need a sub or much help if any for music.

Hello all,
I am very glad to discover people who share a common passion for these wonderful speakers.

I hope my question is not too innapropiate, but I would like some suggestion about coupling a pair of the small Audience 42 with an Onkyo Integra A-8850 amplifier. I already got the speakers at half price and consider to buy second hand that amp (~300$) . They will be used in a bedroom , never too loud, but i would appreciate the finest possible detail for what the speakers are capable. I was just wondering if that amp is not too "big" (2 x 120 W at 4 Ohm) for those speakers which i love how they sound on an old sony TA-FA5ES which i had before . Could you make any suggestion/comments/critics?

Thanks in advance for any kind of advice.

There is no such thing as too powerful an amp.

I couldn't agree more. Those Dyn's will love that power, if you can feed them more!
Realistically I would think there would not be much to gained by feeding them more than 200 watts per side. The 42's are inefficient at 86 db but they can't produce the spl that the larger floor standers can. 120 watts should be just fine, certainly not over powered.

thanks very much for advice!

Audience 52 vs BM6 Passive
Has anyone done any comparison between the Dynaudio 52 and Dynaudio BM6 passive near field montiors? This will be used in a 13'x15' room. I am considering either Onkyo TSXR674 or Denon 2807 receiver. I plan to get 122c for center channel.

I'm in the midst of demoing an Ayre Cx-7e cd player with my Sim I5.3 amp and Dynaudio S1.4's.

The Ayre player is showing itself to be a great addition to my system, however, I'm interested in your experiences with other cd players and the S1.4's.

Congrats on the 25's. Huge improvement over the B$W's I would imagine. The Esotar2 tweeter is incredible.
