But man; HD has barely taken hold...and it would be easy to argue, even that hasn't penetrated the mainstream at all. It's really just, a faction of the faction...that is audiophiles.

DSD? It's a gleam in your father's eye...lol. There's just NO content (unless you're all about Classical...or plan to buy an old PS3, and rip your own. I'll hand it to the Classical guys; they are always first, to push the SQ envelope!)

I guess my point is; sure, it couldn't hurt. But if it were me...I wouldn't choose an otherwise "better" (sounding) DAC, over another...because of DSD.

Happy reading wink.gif

Looks like positive consensus to me! How often does that happen? For under $1k? I think I'm sold smile.gif

And thanks for the PM!

BTW...ever since giving up my C1s frown.gif...but holding onto my Stand4s; I've been contacted by various members, about selling them. I've resisted; mostly out of hope, that I'd have use for them again...in the somewhat near future.

This Thursday, that hope will come to fruition or not. If there's no S1.6 on the horizon; or something that will stand-mount to the 4s...it'll be time for them to go to a good home.

First come, and/or best offer. PM me.

S 1.6? Where you getting that number? Why not S 1.5?

I'm betting no new Contours. Given the Focus line the only reason to have them at all is for the styling. Otherwise updating the line just overlaps and competes with the Focus. My bet is it slowly goes the way of the Audience, which was the line just below the current Contours when they first appeared. Then it made sense , i.e. Audience->Contour->Confidence.

140s went to 160s; 1.4 = 1.6 biggrin.gif

It seems very unlikely. IDK about anyone else; but I really have no idea what it is.

To me, the clues don't add up; but I guess we'll know soon enough.

Yes but there was also a contour s 1.3. So Contour s 1.5 would make more sense wouldn't it? This isn't the Focus line numbering. rolleyes.gif

1/6: "I'm thrilled"
2/6: "I'm mesmerized"
3/6: "I'm ecstatic"
4/6: "I'm delighted"
5/6: "I'm surprised"
6/6: "I'm amazed"

And answer will be "I'm Excited"

So your bet is on a new Excite line?
I just figured this out...

How about a new line combining the Focus and Contour lines named......SPLICE....LOL!smile.gif
post #19241 of 21832
If we exam in the "i" alone in the teaser pic above (I added the red letters), I think we may be able to interpret this literally as perhaps a unique speaker+sub combination. Maybe as a new line or an addition to the Xeo line? I still think it involves a sub.
Another idea...super budget model called ENTICE.....wink.gif

82db sensitivity for the x14, ouch!

That's pretty inefficient; really a shocker. 4db down, from the X12 (and 5 against the X16). I thought Dyn was headed in this "modern" direction. This is a head-scratcher.

At 8 ohms too.

I'm wondering if one was to take a current Excite X32 (or even the Xeo 5), and in a double blind test, note an improvement in the "new" Excite X32?
Wasn't the Excite line released recently? It has not been that long, yet how long has the Contours been on the market?............Just my gut feeling, the Contour line is not longed for this world.

Its good to see continual improvement, I want what has changed on the competitve landscape that required this, thenew KEF R series?
The woofers of the X38 are new, before they had the inverted dust caps. I wonder if the taller x24 cabinet means a larger woofer? Say from 4.33 to 5 inches?

Well, that's what I thought too; but actually, the Excite line has been around 5-6 years I would say...because that's when I first became interested in Dyns wink.gif

Still...there's no question, it's the newest of the lines; and so to give it an update...before the Contour...speaks volumes. Either the Contour is not long for this world (which I've been saying for a while now)...or just the opposite. We don't know the sales figures. Maybe this is more a case of "if it ain't broke..."

Another thought, what if the new Excite sonics are similar to the Focus. Notice has the Excite has lost its grey facade and looks like the Focus line now. Maybe the Focus line is going away to make more breathing room for the Contours.

1. Excite vs. Focus: sonically similar? I have compared the X12 and Focus 140. I can't say they were exactly similar but I am not sure if they were the best representatives from each model line to compare. (I personally preferred the X12.) Callas has compared the X16 vs the Focus 160 and would be in a better position to comment.

2. Not all older Excites had the grey facade. The high-gloss white and black X12 and X16 models did not have the metallic face plate.

3. The Focus line underwent a "shift-up" in the lineup in late 2011 after the series debuted in 2005. This would suggest a 6-year upgrade cycle? This is in line with what was said about the Excite line. Can a similar pattern be found with their other lines? I don't think that the Focus line will be discontinued before 2017 or so.

4. It would appear that the New Excite line is the first to use magnetic grills!

5. I still think if I could compare the X16 vs. X14, the former would still win the day. Meaning, I still see a place, both in terms of price and performance, for the X16 even in the New Excite lineup. It should also be noted that both the New Excite and Excite lines are co-represented on the Dynaudio website. This leads me to believe the two lines will continue to coexist as if Dynaudio's market research found that there is room for an Excite+ model beneath the Focus line. This would also lead me to believe that the New Excite line will cost at least a small premium initially. But one can only assume that the Old Excite line will eventually be phased out. I am personally extremely curious as to why an X18 wasn't released? Perhaps the X16 did compete too closely with the Focus 160 and was not given the New treatment.

My Dyns have all been Cherry, except the Maple Contour S1.4s I had for a year.

If I were to get different Dyns now, my first choice would be to stay with Cherry. Second would be gloss Piano Black.

Just because a "new" speaker has been released, it doesn't mean it's "better".

I hear a lot of people wanting to replace the Contour line with a "New" Contour line, assuming it would be better. Perhaps that's one reason Dynaudio hasn't done it....cannot improve the speaker under their cost restraints (which dictates everything they do).

This news is very underwhelming for me. I'm sure the Sales force of Dynaudio will trump it up as so much superior to the older Excite......it'll give magazine reviewers something else to do, but to me, this simply smells like selling the idea of an upgrade more than an actual one.

I tell you what though...most people in the price range of the Exites will want to use an AVR as part of an HT. 82db, even at 8 ohms, is going to have a lot of receivers sending clipped signals.

Hi All,

I've been following this forum for a while, and trying to read through all the material....quite daunting.

I'm new to "hi-fi" 2 channel audio and had a quick question.

I recently took the plunge and purchased my first pair of Dyns....Focus 160!

I'm still breaking them in, and running with some old borrowed gear from a friend.

I'm looking to spend 1000 - 1500 on an amp...figure at this price integrated is the way to go.

Anyhow, my question, I've come across a used Creek Destiny for $1100 through a dealer, thats in great shape.

What are your thoughts on this, and is this a fair price? Since I'm new, my thoughts are to run with the Destiny and see how I like it, and if I decide to sell down the road I won't lose alot of $$.

Thoughts, its the Destiny One...2 years old, one owner, and traded in to the same dealer.

Thanks,

Jay

Well, I disagree about the Contour face-lift Jam. Though I haven't heard them personally...reports from other Dyn users who have, describe the Excite and new Focus line as just slightly "tipped-up"; just a bit more open, and bright...than the usual Dyn house sound. In my mind...that would make the Contour (the S1.4 anyway), nearly a perfect speaker at its price. I think the speaker could use this tweaking. If it has one knock, it is that it's slightly "dark"; almost too "smooth"...a touch bass-heavy. Did anyone have any similar criticisms about the Excite? From what I could tell, it was a damn good line...for the price (in fact...I think I'm going to get a pair of X12s, for the Office...while I still can!)

That's why I just don't understand this whole 82db sensitivity issue. If Dynaudio is getting just a tad more "modern"; not quite so dark...broadening its appeal, etc. 82db is not the way to go. But my guess is, if the Contour still sells well; that's why it was not upgraded...or discontinued.
