Samsung HL-S6767W - Page 51

Chazanova, those are nice-looking custom stands. Do you know that the foot in the center of the TV--the thing with the 'toe' sticking forward...is easily removeable? Remove two screws, push 2 snaps, and pull it to the TV's rear.

I'm building a combination centerchannel speaker and stand for mine. A cabinetmaker/friend is cutting and assembling the system from 1" MDF; I'll be doing everything else. The speaker is rather ambitious--it'll use, in an MTM trio, the same Sonic Craft 6-1/2" bass/midrange drivers and Dayton tweeter as my main speaker systems...

...to which AVS won't let me post a link...

and will have 4 more of the 6-1/2s as bass-only drivers, all in an open baffle. I'll drive the bass system thru an old Dahlquist LP-1 active-low-pass filter and use another channel of the Outlaw 770. The LP-1 has bass-level controls so the system will be easily tunable for voice articulation or music (more warmth).

I'll post some pics when I'm finished....if I get to 5 posts by then.

...and I'm THRILLED with it. Its predecessor was a 7-year-old Toshiba 50" line-doubling 4:3 that looked pretty good, but the Sam is LOTS better, even when driven by only a progressive-scan DVDP, a Denon 2900.

I had done some serious adjusting before I received a 'Digital Video Essentials'; using that caused me to reduce Sharpness--they really ought to rename that control 'Ugly Graininess'--from 10 to zero and increase Black Level/Brightness about 10.

Of course, I'll have to buy a stand. Does anybody have any thoughts on which of these two that they would prefer if price were equal or close? Also, I've scoured this thread, and I can't find whether or not the 6767W accepts 1080p over component. If Costco drops the price back to 2499 for, say, NBA and NHL playoff season, I'll definitely get the 67.

Gurn,

According to my 6767W owners manual, yes, it does accept 1080p inputs, both in component and of course, HDMI!

The 7178W is Also a Fantastic display...every bit as good, if not better than the 6767W! For equal money, and if you have 10' or so from your viewing position, I'd get the 7178W!!! Personally, I like the look of the 67's "floating screen" design, but if all else were equal...!

Can't go wrong either way, both are Great HDTV displays! Good luck with your decision!

Thanks, Theophile! I was looking at the spec sheet on the 67, and it only lists up to 1080i on component. I appreciate your info.

Very difficult decision. I'm leary about buying from the online dealers: I haven't found any that accept returns on large screen TVs except Costco. If anyone would be willing to PM their purchase price and dealer info, I would appreciate it greatly.

gentlemen,

Great posts and information from so many I've been reading last 25 pages of posts and head is spinning...good stuff. I have a Grand Wega from 5 yrs ago lcd rptv and its been great but light is getting out of line and picture is fading on me so thought time to get an upgrade.

I saw the sammy 1080p at costco but haven't been able to really find any reviews other than here on this set. I'm curious why this hasn't been reviewed by cnet and the like as it seems to be a powerhouse TV.

I'm trying to decide b/w Vizio 50 plasma, samsung 5053 flat plasma, or go back to rptv DLP such as this one. I sure could use your advice and thoughts on this as I have a feeling others have thought about this.

My thoughts are I don't want to spend big money more than 3k prefer the 1500-2400 range as this technology is changing. Spent 4k on last tv and tossing that now. So wanting a tv that is going to give me a great picture, great inputs for the digital devices over next 5 yrs. This is in a home theater environment dark room large great sound system viewing distance 8-10 ft etc.

I really appreciate your help and any thoughts or links you can show me.
wburdett, the 6767W at Costco seems to be sold exclusively at Costco's and, in the recent past, Sam's. You can rely on the reviews on this website concerning the 6767: many very knowledgable people think very highly of it. I've looked, and I can't find any other reviews on the internet or in publications.

Would this be a fair review of 6767 different model but I would imagine very similiar internals?

Sorry for all the questions one more.

thoughts on costco with 2 yr service vs buying 61 in which I believe is same tv but buying a 4 extended warranty as it seems there could be issues down the line. Price on 61 is about 400 cheaper than 67 but with extended warranty 150 cheaper.

Does amex add 1 yr to warranty or double the warranty just wondering if anyone new how that worked and who managed that warranty.

Any issues with 67 vs 61 in ya'lls opinion in regards to grainier picture on SD due to larger screen or HD for that matter. I like the idea of a 67 though. Again thanks.
I recently checked the Samsung parts website (samsungparts)
and the price for a HLS6767W bulb was listed at $149.99.
Did the price recently drop for this, is this the right part (BP96-01472A, Philips 132W)?

I've now come to find out that the price at Costco is an open box and last one they have. Not sure I want a used TV although it's broken in already. Does have some smudges but easy to clean I'd imagine.

What are your thoughts save the money and get open box or just get a 61 in as now the price difference is 1000 dollars for the 6 inches of viewing.

That's no value either way with this technology. Assuming it's been on for a lot of hours what you will get is a very old lamp and a fairly old color wheel.

If the smudges are on the outside surface of the screen they are easy to clean. They can be between layers, and they can be on the inside surface. Neither one is a snap to clean.

Sam's Club discontinued the 6767W on 1-1-07 (on line and stores) and I picked up a local Sam's floor model + stand (last 67" over 3-states) for $2K...manager stated it had been a demo for 2 months (about 1K hours on bulb).

Cleaned up the dust and finger prints and Wow, the PQ is Amazing! Since the receipt doesn't say "open box", I have the 1 year mnf. warranty to rely on. The savings of the purchase will easily cover 2-$150 bulb replacements + a 4 year Repairmaster servive warranty + 25 HD-DVD's....!!!

For me, my fm display has worked out...guess your purchase opportunity depends on their sale price reduction offer for a used, discontinued set and the performance risk you are willing to accept!

btw, did I say the HD\\SD PQ of the 67" is fantastic, breathtaking, awesome, inspiring.....oh, I did, Never Mind!

Good luck with your decision!

Well.. it finally happened.. the son got to the TV. He decided, after sticking his fingers in his mouth while playing, that it would be a good idea to give dad a heart attack by touching the TV. I think I broke Mach I getting over to where he was at and moved him away from the TV, but not before the damage was done. 2 very visible yuck-marks on my otherwise pristine TV. Heeelp!! Will the included blue cloth be enough to wipe that away? Is there some type of cleaning kit you've used that's effective against saliva?

Your son didn't damage your other "pride and joy".

The included cloth is microfiber and it will do the job. In this case you might want to use it slightly damp.

You can find microfiber cloths in places like Walmart, hardware stores, and auto parts stores if you want a bigger one. Just be sure you don't buy one impregnated with auto polish or other cleaning chemicals.

By the way, you have just taught your son that he can get a big reaction from Dad by touching that big screen. You might want to come up with some way to hide the entertainment value by distracting him instead of using the "big scoop" method.

Now I have a confession to make.

I believe I am now the worst abuser of the 6767 stand/glass.

It holds my Onkyo receiver, HTPC, center speaker, Slingbox, HD DVD 360 add-on drive, router and modem.

However, it got some support, thanks to my wonderful wife. It was her project.

Home Depot guy was captured at Home Depot and forced to cut drain pipe into equal parts, about 4" each.

Then all those pieces were painted and laquered.

Then those pieces were put into furniture movers from Bed, Bath and Beyound.

Total cost was about $30.

I beleive this glass can now hold a small elephant.

The drainpipe was a great idea. Can you give us a better picture how you have them laid out, the tiger is in the way? How many did you use? Did you just put them under the glass or did you also but a couple under the supporting arms? What in the world do you have in A/V stand? Are those all pre-amps? Tell us about your system?

Picture is below.

I used 5 of them out of probably 20 cut (Home Depot guys don't work well under pressure ).

All are under the glass.

In the A/V stand I have 1 HTPC and 4 Sony XL1B2 200 DVD changers / burners daisy-chained to the HTPC#1 thru 1394. There is also H20 DirecTV HD receiver on the top of the one of the changers.

My system is described in details in this thread:

I feel lonely there, 180 views and no comments? Someone please say "nice job Galileo2000"

Nice job Galileo2000!

Now that we've seen the most amazing combination of components on the planet, I can't help asking about your speakers. With your TV against the wall on one side, I'm having a problem visualizing the location of your speakers.

Thanks htwaits!!

My speakers (small speakers from Mission, can't remember the model number, 5.1) are above the TV on the same wall (front L/R) and surround speakers are on the left and right walls. You can see the right speaker on the ( pretty bad ) picture.
Left speaker sits on the top changer in the A/V cabinet at the moment.

Powered subwoofer is behind the Sammy on the right side.

I am completely impressed, if only I understood what the hell you did??? I understand the 4 DVD changers, but I am lost on all of the new tech that you are talking about but it sounds really cool and I know I will want it sometime. Any tips or suggestions now that you have gone through it???

BTW, anyone have any good suggestions for universal remote controls that will take care of everything? I am tired of 5 remotes.

Belusch,

What exactly do you want to know?

My remote control solution is described there (see the very last post, replaces 8 remote controls):

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...ht=galileo2000

I can play HD DVDs on my system at full 1920x1080p resolution.

If something goes wrong with HTPC #1, I can fire up HTPC #2 and she who must obey will watch the movie and will not complain about all the $$$ I've spent on this stuff.

If I am in New Zealand tomorrow, I can have full access to everything and anything I have in my living room.

Ask specific questions, I will answer.
If you ask about HTPC / System, please ask in the AVS HTPC thread http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=837015
so we won't pollute this thread.

Nice Job!!! ... I'm also abussing my glass shelve; I have my receiver, VCR, DVD, DVR .... What I did is put my UPS unit underneat.

I have a question (hopefully you can help me), Have you noticed any popping sound (like when you heat plastic and expands and contracts) on your TV???? mine does that, I wrote Samsung and they told me that I have to call to discuss that with a live person .... I'm trying to find out if somebody else has the same problem or if is just me. What my TV does is after at least 30minutes of use, from time to time it makes a popping/craking noise ... I think maybe is heat build up inseide the TV and that produces the noise.

Have you (or any other owner of a HLS676W) noticed this???? ... please let me know so I can call Samsung and explain them.

It's common. Plastic -- power on -- heat -- expansion -- pop -- power off -- cool -- contraction - pop.

Most people ignore it. Some have tried backing up the screws on the case a slight amount.

Mine does it, too. Can anyone report on whether loosening the screws alleviates the problem?

Check the big owner's thread and maybe you can find someone who has done it.

As docrings has reponded, it is in the "Service Manual" not the operators manual. I purchased it at samsungparts.com part number sm-hlsXX8Xw where the x's= size and series (SM-HLS5088W). It's on page 6-3 in the service manual under: 3.Noise. As I re-read it, it says: "Any intermittent 'creaking' noise can be removed by loosening the screws." Quote

You are correct, it is the case. According to the service manual, loud popping or banging sounds coming from the TV are caused by the expansion and contraction of the case due to thermal changes. This sound is caused by the case screws being too tight and recomends slightly losening the external case screws.

Note: It does not say what "slightly" means so, I would say no more than 1/8th of a turn.

Is good to know that were not alone .....

Here is a couple of posts I found today, I will loose the screws on my TV and hopefully this will solve the problem .... Thanks to all.
