I would prefer to buy some at a store as opposed to on line. I will be getting the new DirecTV DVR coming out soon (it gets local HD channels, doesn't need a phone line), and I'm hoping the HDMI issue will go away.

Personally, I use Blue Jeans Cables .

Wow they are expensive

I suggest the premium 5rca component cables here

Wal-mart sells Phillips Component cables.
Ditto on Monoprice. Very good quality at very reasonable prices.
Are the Phillips cables good? I know they are relatively cheaper.
I use the Phillips cables from DVD to my A/V receiver. No complaints.

I use the gold plated ones cost me less then $20 for 6 feet.

I just picked up the 65f59 today. Out of the box with out doing any convergence the sets picture is quite good. One thing that worries me is that I think I'm seeing scan lines every now and then from my seating position. I don't know if it's my dvd player or just that I haven't adjusted the set properly.

Make sure your DVD player is set to progressive, then your DVD player is doing a poor job of de-interlacing 480i.

Since scanlines do not scale with resolution, this will happen with SD content unless you have a decent de-interlacer in the mix

Anyone ever use Best Deal Cables?

Should I buy an HDMI cable before the cable man comes to my house? When the cable box is connected to the TV is it just by the HDMI cord or are the component cables still plugged in to it? (the three colored cords)?

Comcast did not supply me with the HDMI cable, you can purchase one here

HDMI will carry both digital video and digital audio to your tv with 1 cable.

I watched a few more dvds and I noticed it's not really scanlines I'm seeing but just a rolling line. It's kind of like a ripple that shows up every 20 minutes. I think it's probably my player but I don't really have any other good players to test.

Its your player/or set....depending whats doing the de-interlacing, I've turned my cable box from 480p to 480i for SD and there are noticable artifacts(blown up scanlines), the TV's de-interlacer is not/does not work miracles, you should atleast invest in a DVD player that output decent 480p(it wouldn't cost more then $50 )
A decent progressive-scan DVD player is a must. I use the well regarded Panasonic S97, and the progressive component output (480p) to my f1F59 is very good. However, it takes another step up when I use the HDMI output and send the DVD signal at 1080i, avoiding the scaler in the tv.

ssj is a smart man, the TV's scaler is pretty poor, but its acceptable when watching properly de-interlaced 480p

You can get a nice up-scaling dvd player for cheaper then the S97 though, the little brother of that model, S77, still has faroudja (genisis) scaling chipset.

Well after watching a few more dvds the rolling lines have seemed to stop. The only problem I have now is that I really don't know what to do during manual convergence. I can get into the convergence grid and move the cursor around but I can't figure how to actually adjust anything in there. I've read the manual but it hasn't helped me at all.
For convergence let the set warm up for an hour, in my opinion the 20 minutes suggested in the manual is too short. Start with magic focus, then after that do the 9 point convergence and save your settings. Then, do the 117 point convergence and save.

What you're looking to do is line up the red and blue lines directly on top of green, which remains stationary. Red is easiest to do because it's easier to see. Although it's a pain, I actually do all red convergence 1st, then all blue. Start in the center and work your way to the edges. For example, if you see red on the right side of the line, move it left until you see no red.

Blue is a bit trickier for two reasons. 1st, blue is more difficult to see. 2nd, blue is intentionally defocused slightly (results in higher light output) which causes the blue lines to be a bit thicker. If the blue lines are thicker you'll want to make sure that if there is overlap on the grid lines, that it's equal on all sides. Hope that helps.
Are you able to move the entire line because when I go into convergence all I can move are the two short parallel lines. I can move them around to any point and switch the colors but I can't actually adjust anything. Also all the lines are white so where is this green line I'm supposed to line up with?

You are lineing up all the colors(red, green, and blue) so they blend to make white properly
post #260 of 4686
I know that I'm supposed to line them up, I just can't figure how to. I can move the cursor around and switch the color from red to white to blue but i don't know how to adjust any of the lines. Can someone please tell me how they did this step by step and what buttons they were pressing at the same time. Also how long can I have the convergence grid before I have to worry about burn in?
Move the "cursor" to the section you want to adjust and press 'select', the cursor will change to red and you use the directional 'arrow' keys that surround the select button. Hold it down to really move the red and you'll see it move off of the line that is surrounded by the cursor (the +). Move it back or cancel but this will show you what you are doing. You can move that color on the + up/down/left/right to make it as perfectly balanced as possible. Press 'select' again and it changes to Blue. Do the same adjusting blue this time. Press 'select' again and it changes back to white which allows you to move it to another "+" to work on.

Try your adjustments first on the 9-point convergence. Usually that is enough anyways but if not go to the 117-point and adjust there. Again you'll move around (each press of the arrow keys will move you to an adjustable section...press select to cycle through red/blue/free to adjust that color or have free movement to another section.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the help. I was finally able adjust the lines during convergence. One question I have is on the sides the lines start get more wavy should I forget about doing convergence in those areas?
I have read in earlier posts about the defocused blue gun. I just confirmed it on my set too. Could someone explain what the effects or tradeoff would be for opening up the front panel to make this adjustment? I read that a reason for the defocusing was for a brighter picture... Would focusing this result in a clear/sharp but dimmmer picture then? Any advice from someone who has performed this procedure would be cool! thanks.

I am wondering if anyone here has set this tv up with a harmony or other programmable remote? If so does it have discreet input selection or does the harmony have to bring up the list and try to scroll through the inputs?

I bought the 51F59 for my parents and have been thinking about getting them a harmony remote to make everything easier for them. This is one thing that might help with my decision.

So I went in to CC today to look at the 51f59, and the screen showed two images side by side with a bar at the top and one at the bottom..

Does anyone know why this is? Or how I could fix it there? Didn't want to ask anyone because I'm sure they would just try to seel me a more expensive TV, and I hate salespeople.

I've got a harmony (don't have the Hitachi). The Harmony is customizable in about every way you can imagine. I have the 880 and although I wish the buttons were laid out a little differently, I love the remote. I use to it control my HTPC and TV. I replaced one of the LCD Sony remotes that was only about 1 month old at the time. The sony was decent but way too big.

hey, guys. i just got this set sunday [been waiting about 3 weeks on account of cc goofing up TWICE insert groan here], and i'm real impressed with it. it's not just my first hdtv but also my first bigass set. since i had ordered in june, i've been checkin these forums out for advice and whatnot, basically these are the key things i've gathered:

1. i want to keep the brightness and contrast much lower than the default setting which was at 100 for contrast, brought it down to 55, all other levels there or lower. right?

2. i'll want to wait about 100-200 hours before doing any fine tuning like convergence tests, right? [i've also read that i should do an auto-convergence immediately after setting it up, wrong?]

3. use a variety of formats which fill the screen to counter burn-in from black barred content, this mainly for long term preservation, right?

well, if you guys have anything to add that i've missed, feel free to add or correct me. i'll assume i'm doing things right if i don't get any comments, so thanks for reading this far!

now here's my real question: what is the best way [if i should at all] to display my pc on this set? i used to display it on the old magnavox through the standard red, white, yellow cables, but that was not an hd set like this. if i set it up the same way, will i only get a standard 480i signal, in which case could i enable the virtual hd 540p/1080i setting? i have yet to use the virtual hd setting and assume it upconverts sd signals somehow. i'm sure there's a better way to display my pc, but if yall ain't got any better suggestions, would know know which forum i should check out?

GRACIAS

First of all, I want you to understand if you will be using this set for PC text will be difficult to read(if possible at all)

But generally the easiest way to get PC picture and sound on your tv is to buy these cables and adapters I listed in this post
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...&&#post8025817
(If 15/12feet is not long enough monoprice sells longer cables)
Then go into here and read stickies about creating custom resolutions for your TV in powerstrip
