The last poster prety much made my point. Personally I dont fear burn in. But I guess if you watched grey bar stuff 24/7 it may cause an issue.

For the most part I watch most 4:3 material in the stretch mode , but there are times I do watch with the grey bars. Some 4:3 material is just too low quality to stretch. It will depend on the SD quality of the channels in your area.

But as stated you will be surprsed at how nice the stretch is on this tv.

Hello,
I purchased this set about a week ago. I have also read just about every page of discussions in this forum!! My eyes are hurting!!
Here's MY questions: (forgive me if they have been answered, but I DID read through all posts, and didn't see any answer to my questions....)
I am coming in, SD not through a box, just plugged straight into my Sony RDR HX-900 DVD player, out of the Sony via component cables to the input 3 on the Hitachi. (will have a new Denon receiver soon-lightning took out my Onkyo)
I "assume" it is giving me an output of 480 in progressive mode?? I popped in Star Wars, and noticed throughout the movie some small white lines a few inches below center every now and then...not sure what this was.
Should I set the Virtual HD to 540p or 1080i? I assume since it is getting a 480 signal to set it to 540p?
Hmmm, did the magi-focus, and the 9pt manual after about 20hrs useage.
Set it using Lee's (thank you!) settings. Does the settings get "erased" when I push day or night under picture mode?
On my dvd player, I have wide, dynamic, standard settings for audio out.....Do I just turn these off, and use the setting through the tv? (I am using the speakers in the tv until I get the new receiver)
Will I get noise if I plug my tv,receiver, dvd player into an APC UPS? I'm kinda paranoid about another lightning strike. Heard good things about brick wall on another forum....
Last question: I got a "calibration" dvd when I bought my set from ccity. Is this a good starting point for calibration?
Overall, very satisfied for a tv that cost $1080, delivered same day free, and received some of the best service I ever have had-and I have worked in cust service for over 15yrs! Very happy, and ready to tweak!
THANK YOU FOR THIS THREAD!

I hooked up my HD digital box yesterday and the HD channels blew me away! Man this tv has a great picture. My fiance turned on "So you think you can dance" and the lights and PQ were amazing. I did see a few faults though and I don't know whats the blame; here's what I seen.

At first I hooked up the box via HDMI, I got picture but no sound. I'm thinking "oh no, I hope its not the TV", so I changed the HDMI to components and got video/audio. We started to watch "So you think..." and I noticed when the host would stand in front of an all red background, the red would get these horizontal lines that were missing a lot of color (only on the right side of the screen). So I flipped around the channels and they didn't really appear anywhere else.
I decided to call TWC tech support about the HDMI issue, and it was really simple, the software in the box wasn't updated to support HDMI audio (They are bringing a new box today).
The last issue that I'm having is when I'm watching an HD channel and the commercials come on, the black bars on the side of the screen are uneven. The bar on the right is like 2.5" and the bar on the left is about 4 to 5", and I think it's effecting the whole picture. When I go to a SD channel that's in 4:3 the grey bars come on and there is a thin black bar between the grey bar on the left and the picture. So the left side there's grey for about 4" then black 1" then the picture and on the right it's just grey for about 3". So I started to wonder if things are being cut out of the right side of the picture. I turned on a workout channel, because the instructor is usually in the middle and its mostly symetrical. Well, the instructor was off to the right a little and the girl on the right was halfway out of the screen and the girl on the left was cleary on the screen plus a couple of feet to her side. Do you guys think this is a problem with the Box, or could there be something wrong with the TV? Oh yeah, the espn HD channel does the same thing. There sidebars that come on during commercials and during sportscenter where uneven too. The one on the right was a lot smaller than the one on the left.

I just can't get over the picture that this TV puts out. My boss has a huge samsung 1080p dlp and this tv has just as good of a picture, it's unbelievable that he spent about 3000 for his, lol.

as far as the 4x3 screen being uneven 2.5 on one side and 4-5inch on the other i would say your aspect ratio is not set correctly someplace, either the tv and the cable box. both have setting and i would put the tv on 16x9 automatic and have the cable box 16x9 and 4x3 stretched or standard which every you like that should take care of the uneven screen. also you can access the aspect ratio in the cable box's advance settings in case you weren't sure. hope this helps. fyi i have the 57f59. oh set all input to 1080i as i think this gives the best overall picture on this tv in my opinion. enjoy!

I've went into the advanced settings on the cable box and it's set for 16:9 and 4:3 sidebar (stretch loses alot of quality, i use the aspect button on the remote for 4:3 and change it to expanded). My tv is on 16:9 also when watching HD. When it goes to commercials and the black bars come on the bar on the right is dramatically smaller than the one on the left. I've also figured out that I'm losing some of the picture on the right side of the screen. It's not my settings I know how to set them, I think there might be a problem w/ the box. Has anyone else experienced this?

I've also read that some HDTV's have a "centering" option. Do these Hitachi's have this feature? I don't think the Pace HD box I have has that option.

With the advances we've seen in other technologies (i.e., longer lasting plasmas and reduced risk of burn in) is there a REAL risk of burn-in with the 59 series?

I'm not saying sitting there and watching 8 hours a day, everyday with the gray bars on the side but Im talking regularly TV watching, or doing old school gaming.

Thank you in advance.

Personally. I am not worried about burn in at all. Thats my own opinion of course. I truly think the only way to get burn in is by blatant abuse. Use common sense and I think everything will be fine. Reduce contrast and brightness levels to normal. Dont leave a static image on screen for 2 straight days . Use 4:3 expanded when you can and enjoy the TV.

Just think. How many people do you know that have rpcrt tv's that dont do any of those things ? Personally I dont know anyone besides me who owns a rpcrt that knows about any of this stuff. They just turn it on and watch it. Heck my brother has had the same tv for 7 years. He doesnt know jack about any of the stuff I know and he has no problems at all.

Chitown, Thank you, and I gotta tell you, I'm leaning more and more towards this TV (65F59) even though I have a hl-s6187 on order.

It's inexpensive enough that if I want to change TV technologies or to wait and see how Directv shakes out with HD in my area (HR20-250) I can do it in a couple of years and move the 59 series into another room...oh, and I can go and get it RIGHT NOW.

Thats exactly my philosphy. I bought my F59 because it is very nice HDTV, handles SD VERY well, and it will tide me over until the HD market as a whole gets figured out in the next few years. The fact that is costs about 2K less than a comparable microdisplay only solidified my decision.

Sorry to be asking another question but does this TV have the 3/2 pulldown?

If it does, where does it state that?

I cannot find it in the manual or specfication listings in certain sites.

It's called Movie mode, and it is enabled in the user menu.

I just got my Comcast Cable box upgraded to the Hi Def version. I've got my 57F59 hooked up via component at 1080i, the picture is amazing!

Question for you on your cable box Lee. First off did you get the dual tuner motorola? If you did when you switch from an HD channel to an SD channel does your screen kind of scramble up instead of just smoothly changing to the SD station ?

Hard for me to explain, but whenever I go from an SD channel to an HD channel or vice versa my screen " scrambles" up before switching channels. Unlike the normal smooth channel changing I normally get. Its hard to explain , but if its happening to you youll know what I mean. It isnt a problem and doesnt seem to effect my TV , but I just wonder if its notmal. P.S. This only happens via HDMi.

the reason it is (scrambling) you have more then one output format selected on your cable box so the tv has to either up convert to HD or down convert to sd. i have my cable box set at 1080i for all formats and in my opinion this gives me the best overall picture and you won't keep doing the scrambling thing every time, plus i have found no benefit to selecting 720p or 480i/p on the cable box. the picture seems to be just as good if not better on 1080i for all output formats. hope this helps. good luck and let me know if this resolves the problem.

This is the Motorola DCT6200 HD cable box. It does not have a dual tuner. The scrambling comes from the fact that I set the box up so all HD channels send my TV 1080i, and I set the 480 override to 480i. If you set the override to off, it should simply show the SD channel with black bars inserted by the cable box, instead of the TV using its grey bars. I see this with my component connection. I've not tried the DVI/HDMI connection. Will need a DVI to HDMI adapter first, though I think I will leave it on the component, and try out the Oppo 971H over the HDMI.

Lee and Big. Thanks for the responses guys. Your responses make sense,but the problem for me is that the new dual tuner box from Motorola does not allow you to select output formats. I called Comcast because I could not find the menu where you select formats and they told me that this box simply outputs whatever a particular station is transmitting. It does not allow you to select between 480/720/1080. The only thing that resmbles something of what your suggesting is an option called " RF bypass" on or off. Ill give that a shot and see if that does anything.

Turn the cable box off and press the menu button. It should bring up the settings menu.

If this works Im going to call Comcast and snap on them. They flat out told me you cant select between 480/720/1080.

Thanks. You were exactly right. I cant believe how uninformed these people are.
There was nothing in there though to fix my issue. Not that its really an issue at all.

It's been about 5 days now since I brought the 51f59 home and I've been doing extensive fiddling w/ all the settings and inputs. I'm starting to conclude that the HDMI is really crappy w/ this TV. It's either that or I have a "dud". I haven't experienced any of the all green or black screens that some on this thread have stated their HDMI problems with, but this is what I'm seeing:

Whether the HDMI through the HD cable box or my DVD player I'm seeing on the right side of my screen something really wierd and irritating. When there is an object in the middle of the screen I see horizontal lines stretching all the way from the right edge of the object to the right edge of the screen and the color is all broken. This is kinda hard to describe, but it's almost like an old tv getting bad reception. This only happens in the same spot everytime. Say I was watching "The Wizard of Oz", in the sceene where the scarecrow points both directions for dorothy to travel; from his right hand (on the right of the screen) all the way down to his hip and over to the right edge of the screen (a large rectangle) is broken with those horizontal lines and faint color.

The HD is incredible on this TV and so are my dvd's via component, no problem at all!!! Will Hitachi be able to fix these problems in the future, because I'm starting to believe that there are serious issues with the HDMI? Or could it be that whenever there isn't a 1080 source and I have the virtual hd at 1080 using the HDMI for that specific component, this could be causing the interference?

This is seriously starting to make me nervous about keeping this TV.

Has anyone used the Toshiba HD-A1 player or any other dvd player via HDMI with the Hitachi F59 series of TV. If so, what are the results. I am thinking of purchasing the 57F59 next week, but in the HDMI is problematic, I may have to re-think my purchase.

Thanks,
Randy

Great web site, glad to find others with the HDMI problem with their Hitachi 57F59A. I just bought mine last week at CC for 899 and I love it. However, When I plug my Scientific Atlanta 3250HD STB [DVI] into the HDMI port on the Hitachi, it displays in green and purple only. Went thru two cables and three stb's before I concluded it was the TV. UGH. I am keeping my hopes up that we get this bug squashed.

Would anyone care to help me out with post #452? I had a few questions, but noone responded. Thank you!
Saw a Samsung @ Target for $80 that "upconverts" to 7?? and 1080.....Is this a good player?
I assume it will look WAY better than my current Sony with 480 output...? I will ditch the HDMI and just be using the component outs......(been hearing alot of crap on it lately)
post #474 of 4686
Might be a better thread for me to put this in, but anyway....Do whites and bright scenes look bad on these F59's or is it just me? Dark scenes and scenes with a lot of color look great but when you have a lot of white the white looks noisy and off. In fact any white object at anytime look noisy to me. Is this just a CRT thing in general? If not what would fix it? Happens on all inputs and with all sources, D* HD, BEV HD, Xbox 360, OTA with no multicasting, HDMI, component, you name it. None of the regular settings do anything to it so I'm assuming if there is a fix it's in the service menu or DCAM?

wow, a lot of problems with the hdmi on this tv. i have the 57f59 and i have had only two issues with the tv/hdmi going from dvd player to tv. the only issue i have seen and it was a small one was when i watched about 3 dvd movies for about 4 to 6 hours on one of the movies it turned a funny color like a purple gray. it did this for about 10 seconds and then went back to normal. i have also seen a small issue with my old tv a panasonic pt-47x54j that was replaced (i replaced it with the hitachi 57f59) hooked up to the same dvd player via hdmi once the screen turned all red. it did this only for about ten seconds again. i would say it's probably 75% tv and 25% hdmi/dvd. at least mine only happened after long periods of watching dvd's so it's not that bad and hasn't happened again since. hopefully they (hitachi ) will come out with a firmware update to take care of the hdmi issues. i can live with mine since it's only happened 2 times,but if i were you guy's i would be on hitachi every other day about the hdmi issue since it sounds like it's happening all the time. i guess i'm getting lucky not having all these hdmi issues like most of you. keep on them if they get a flood of call's ect.. about a problem they are more likely to do something about it i would think.

I don't think you'll get the 1080 upconvert through component, only HDMI. I have a toshiba upconvert and if I use component cables, the info says its 480i. My pioneer progressive scan dvd player looks just as good. Buy it and try it with HDMI and let us know if you have any issues, you can always take it back...

I'll be calling them monday, but what really can they do to fix the problem? Would firmware really solve the matter, what if it's the hdmi port all together?
post #478 of 4686
I am thinking of buying one of these, but i am also intruiged by the Hitachi 57X500, does anyone have any experience with that tv as compared to the f59? I see they note hybrid wideneck II CRT's,
but its an older model, so would the crt's in these be identical? (uecweb)
For the f59, which size screen is the 7" crt's optimal for? Viewing distance is 8 feet (from eyeball to theoretical screen position).
The frickin sale @ sears ended yesterday, so ive got a little time now to decide, hopefully they drop the price again soon.

it might the firmware that is. if not and it is the port maybe they can replace it under warranty. i know i would ,but like i said it's only happened twice and after very long hours of use on dvd player. the picture through hdmi via dvd 1080i upconvert is incredible near hd and you cant beat that until the hd dvd format wars settle.

I find that if I lower brightness to where my black is truly black, I lose shadow detail. This is true even after I got into service menu and set the "STATG1" value to the highest setting. I was told STATG1 has something to do with gamma and shadow detail but it's a very subtle change.

Is there a more dramatic way to adjust gamma on this thing? My current settings are:

Brightness = 51
Contrast = 38
Color = 55
Tint = middle
Color Temp = Standard
Sharpness = 60
All enhancements off

Service menu:
STATG2 = 02 (seems to be some sort of "white peaking" setting or something... ?)
STATG1 = 07 (seems to be some sort of gamma adjustment but doesn't do much)
ColorG = 01 (helps to correct red push not exactly sure why)

Any other suggestions? I want shadow detail but without having to sacrifice blacks. I wish I knew more about the service menu.
