russound technical help please...

hi eveyone,

I had something strange happen the other day. We lost power to the house for a while and the next day I went to turn on my Russound CAM 6.6 and the keypads didn't work the LCD screen said" no contrl"

I turned the unit off at the source and rebooted it, still the same problem. I then disconnected all the keypads from the rear of the unit and waited a couple days to turn it back on. When it did the system seemed to work. however when I turned multiple keypads on the same source like in party mode, the were unresponsive and again said no control.

My surge protector wasn't tripped, but I am afraid that the power spike damaged the unit.

Has anyone had this happen to them and can anyone offer any advice.

thanks much

Pat

Hi Pat,

I haven't run into this one before.

I'd recommend giving Russound tech a call or email to inquire. If it's indeed damaged, they can assist with an RMA if the unit is covered under warranty.

Cheers,
Paul

Here is a link to their newsletter. See page 6 for tips on this problem. http://www.russound.com/pdf/russound...ndings_5-2.pdf

I have something similar. Not specifically related to a power outage, but I do get the no controller message. It is still not resolved though so I would be interested to know what happens for you.

I can reboot and sometimes there is no response, sometimes it shows no controller and sometimes it works fine. But it only works fine for a while which can be several days or even a few weeks. Then it has problems again. When I contacted Russound they said they had never heard of a case where it is intermittent like that. It's been very frustrating. If anyone has suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

Fin,

You checked the obvious, right?

- Repunch the 110-block connections on the keypad (actually remove and cut the Cat5 back an inch or so in case there is a broken lead).

- Re-crimp or replace the RJ45 connector at the CAV (the RJ45's pins can become oxidized, or loose if not properly crimped in the first place)

- Temporarily run a new Cat5 from the controller to the keypad, even if temporarily across a floor. This will rule out hidden behind-wall damage to the Cat5 run. if it behaves, you have a wiring problem. If not, see next step.

- If it still acts up, then swap the controller to a known good zone port. If it still acts up at this point, its the keypad. If it behaves on the new zone, you have an intermittent port on the controller.

After changing the firmware in the CAV6.6, I had the same problem. I set the loading program to first erase the existing Firmware first and I reloaded. The system is working again, but I can never get those two hours back.
THis all was because the keypad would not learn a radio station into f1 or f2, like the manual describes.
Did you know they are on the fourth revision of the CAV6.6. How time flies.......

If the power went out, or you had a surge, unplug the CAV from the actual wall outlet for a couple of minutes then plug it back in. It may have built up static electricity which is causing it to act erratically. Basically just like any other electronics equipment, sometimes it's "brain" gets scrambled from a surge or static electricity. Unplugging from the wall allows the capacitors and also and built up energy to dissipate. I would try this first before all the rest of the options honestly. You can't even imagine all the messed up equipment I've fixed over the years just be removing power for a couple of minutes.

Same dang problem here...except none of my UNO keypads work. I took them down one by one and each time, hooked in a section of CAT5 like I was going to program with the front panel RJ45 input.

It's then that the UNO shows No Controler message.

I thought about static or spike too...but I've been trying for a couple of weeks and unlike some here, can't get anything to work.

I cannot get Russound tech support help for various reasons...but the above linked article is helpful, and I've yet to go through all keypads, will update later.

Hope to hear someone resolved this....

Update...after unplugging for several days, replugged back in, same problems.

No Controller message on all 6 zone ports, as well as front programming port.

Will call local Russound dealer for help tomorrow...Russound tech support won't help if not purchased from Russound dealer, which mine isn't.

Wish me luck and look forward to any progress from those above.

What is the best way to find an authorized installer? I am looking for someone with the software that can program a cavs6.6 in So. California.

There's a "Where to buy Russound" link under Product Support on the left side of Russound's home page. This information is actually very incomplete , but in your area you'll likely find a couple options.

Russound is working to replace the current dealer locator pages with a new system that will even differentiate the dealers that have factory training, etc.

If you strike out on the web, try giving them a call 1.866.222.6997 or email sales@russound.com.

Cheers,

hi guys,

sorry I have been away so long. I originally posted this question. I followed up with russound tech support - they stated it sounded like a surge and that the unit needed service. I then spoke with the local dealer I bought my unit from, deisconnected everything and took it to him to check things out. He plugged the unit in with a keypad and it worked. i felt like an idiot - so I took everything home and tested each interconnect with a unused keypad and jumper.

The end result was that I had a RG45 connector loose that shut the whole system down.

I would check disconnect all keypad connections then connector ends as previously mentioned, then test each run with a test keypad and wire. This worked for me I hope that it works for you all. and you should be able to do it quickly to find out the problem.

I now have a new question, so I'll post it above.

take care,

pat

Same problem here...so, a single wire that is loose somewhere in the myriad of connections can stop the whole thing? It's not that there's a short.....just a missing connection? Gee. Is there any shortcut...other than having to dissassemble every one and rebuild the connections? Thanks for the help....

Process of elimination would be your best bet. Bring it down to a simple 1 keypad setup and see if you have the same issue. If so, swap keypads etc etc.
