VX10 or VrP-1000

Hello all,

I am a novice when it comes to subwoofers so I need a little advice. My piece of poop Sony sub (finally) died the other night. I dont wanna spend a lot of money on the sub (around $200) so i've been looking at the Velodyne VX10 and the Velodyne VRP-1000. It seems like the VRP is about $70 more than the VX10. Is there a big difference between the two models??? I am using an Onkyo 803 receiver and have Polk RTI 8s in the front with RTI 6s in the back. Oh..and my room is approximately 12 X 18.

Same sub different finish. Don't be concerned about the slight differences in the advertised specifications. If you don't mind the vinyl veneer the VX10, which is often sold as a loss leader, (check out 6th AVE Electronics on line for pricing) is a better deal. I have used this sub and it offers a very good bang for the buck in smaller rooms.

I had the vpr 1000 for a week.. It was the worst sub i ever owned.

Having owned a VRP-1000 for about 3 weeks before returning it, I would say that you are better off looking elsewhere. In keeping under $300, I would suggest checking out the Acoustech H-100 or Onix X-Sub instead. Each would give you better extension and sound quality in this price range.

I'm sure either of the Velodynes that you have listed would sound a world better than the Sony that you're replacing, but there are definitely better options for the money.

Personally, I traded the VRP-1000 on an Infinity PS-12, which was a MUCH better sub, and I then traded that sub in when I picked up a Mirage S12.

Just to put things in perspective, with proper set up the VRP subs are very capable performers. On the Home Theater Forum they compared the VRP 1200 to the Infinity PS12. Although the infinity slightly edged out the less expensive Velo in over all output, the Velo received a better bang for the buck in the review. I have compared the 12 and the 10 and in smaller rooms (under 2000 cu ft) they are very close.

I bought the vrp1000 ain March, and am using it in a 13*18*7'8" room. So far I am very happy with it.

Its a good sub to start out with. The only negitive thing I have to say is that I wish it went deeper for music.

To refer back to that particular article, the Velo was a better value when compared to the Infinity's list price of $449.99; however, it is not difficult to find the PS-12 on sale at prices less than the VRP-1200. Right now, you can get the Infinity shipped from Vanns for just under $300.

Considering that the PS-12>VRP-1200>VRP-1000, it should also be considered at this price point.

I'm not a reviewer.. I just used it as a everyday consumer. The VPR-1000 cost me around $265 with tax.. Then I bought a H100 for around the same price with a 12 inch woofer. It killed the vpr 1000 by a mile.

Of course this is just my opinion.. But I wouldn't wish the vpr1000 on my worst enemy.. Maybe if the vpr1000 10 inch cost $100 it would be a different story..

The problem with the VRP subs is that the input sensitivity is fairly low and this can effect their performance capability.

There are certain set up procedures that I have recommended on other threads and I have received pm's from member's who received much better results after reading my posts. I also had issues with this model and was ready to return it, but after break in and making the right calibrations it turned into a different sub. The H100 is a great sub and offers the best bang for the buck in it's price range. I've recommended it often on this forum. As I said the VRP 1000 is a bit pricy compared to other offers on the internet but at $169.00 the VX10
offers a lot of value for those with smaller HT rooms and will compete with any sub in the $200.00 +/- price club.

Thanks for all your help guys. I ordered the Accoustech H-100 yesterday for $214 shipped. It ended up costing only $45 more than the velodyne VX10....it sounds like either would've been a big improvement over my sony but everyone seems to really rave about the Accoustech. I hope it arrives soon...I really miss my bass!!! Again, thanks for your help!

That's a great deal on the H-100! If you don't mind, could you share where you got it?

I got it on Ebay from sound_distributors. I think he is asking 245 but there is a button for "Make an Offer." Offer him $185.

I just returned the Infinity PS 12 and re-bought the VRP 1200. The Infinity was nice but after a week of having it the thing would start crackling during any powerful LFE scene in a movie. And it wasn't distortion or boominess, the cracking sound was coming from the physical part of the sub. It sounded like it was going to break. To me that was too noticeable during movies to keep so I gave the VRP 1200 another shot. With mailiang's great set up advice, it is working great! With having owned both the Infinity PS 12 and the Velo VRP 1200, I can tell you for certain that the VRP 1200 can hang with the PS 12 any day of the week when it is tweaked the right way. And, JMO, but I think the Velo is built a lot better than the Infinity was. I did like the Infinity, however, and my home theater speakers are Infinity Primus but when it comes to subs I will take the Velodyne. BTW, Happy Father's Day all AVS Fathers!

It sounds like you just got a bad PS-12 if you were having those types of problems with the physical part of the sub. Regardless, if you're happy with the VRP-1200, that's all that really matters in the end.

My Vrp1000 sounds good to me for $170 new. Can't compete with my SVS PB10 but the size and sound is still good. Not for $250 but under $200 worth it IMO

I just picked up a VRP1200 at A&B sound for 170 bucks yesterday. Not a bad deal. Replaces my old Energy 8" sub. Could I possibly get that setup info as well?

I spoke to Curt C. from Velodyne the other day and he thanked me for advising members on my Velo VRP set up routine. He gets a lot of questions and PM's from the Velo support thread and I'm helping him reduce his work load! If you PM me I will send you my recommendations. $170.00 for a VRP1200! Not a bad deal? Thats a #*#*#* of a deal!
