Sony Pictures press release--titles!

SPHE has the following press release dated 6/13:

http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/060613/20060613005377.html?.v=1

It lists titles for the next few weeks including titles that a thread yesterday claimed had been delayed.

Thsi would appear to be official notice that BD is coming as we have been promised for some time.

Gear mentioned in this thread:

Let's hope so. Launch don't launch. Just pick a firm date and stick to it.

For accuracy's sake, two titles *have* been delayed: Knight's Tale and The Last Waltz. Both were scheduled--as of last Friday, confirmed by SPHE themselves--to be part of the revised 9 title launch for 6/20/06. And both were on the "original" launch scheduled for 5/23/06.

SPHE's been tweaking the launch schedule all month: original plan was to launch with 8, that was upped to 9 and is now down to 7. The MGM distrubution loss hasn't helped them keep on game, no doubt.

Yes, the situation has been a bit fluid. However, yesterday's post claimed:
____
"Sony has delayed some of its titles originally scheduled for a June 20th release. "Last Waltz" and "Knight's Tale" will be moved back to July 25th. "
____

and clearly the delay is only by one week.

A delay is a delay, right? :)

Grubert: SPHE ran a VB pre-order ad for The Benchwarmers for 7/25/06 as well. Odd they didn't see fit to mention that...maybe it's been delayed? :)

Excellent, they've added T1. Now there will be three titles I buy right away. I'm also getting 5th Element & UE.

Gotta love having the 5th Element as a launch title for BD (:
Still far better than what DVD had at its launch.

The first titles released in the U.S., on March 19, 1997, by Lumivision, authored by AIX Entertainment, were IMAX adaptations: Africa: The Serengeti, Antarctica: An Adventure of a Different Nature, Tropical Rainforest, and Animation Greats.

I'd have to disagree. There are probably about 5 movies I'd double-dip on. True, they're not great movies but I'd still be buying them. Oh well.

Is there an extended cut of The Terminator? I was only aware of the extended cut of T2.

You're looking in the wrong forum. I don't expect to see an announcement for King Kong on BD anytime soon... unfortunately. :(

Very true. However the most objective measure is box office and Home video sales. The Terminator did fairly well theatrically and has been very popular on home video, becoming one of the most popular franchises ever.

5th Element is also a pretty popular titles

HOFD was critically acclaimed and did well for a foreign film.

Frankly Hitch was average but it did very well theatrically and is recent enough for people to buy for the first time. 50 first dates is a similar story although I thought it was a fairly watchable film.

So there you go, like it or not, it's a pretty strong launch. Much stronger than DVD and HD-DVD. But lets be honest, does it really matter? Unless your the sort of person who buys 10 DVD's a week regardless of whether you're going to watch them or not it's a little inconsiquential. Most people only buy one disc a month or less, so as long as there are 12 appealing discs a year they'll be happy.

Stealth looks a fairly dumb movie to me (I still laugh about an actor going from an incredible performance in "Ray" to "Stealth", at least in the order they came out in theaters), but somebody showed me a portion of it from DVD and that one could look OMG awesome in HD.

I rented Stealth awhile ago and at the time it was not a DVD purchase but it's a slick looking fun "dumb" action movie. Even my wife said that we should get it in HD when it comes out because of its visuals alone (though we liked the story as well, I thought the critics were too harsh on it and I liked how it cribbed a bit from certain anime series).

Out of the first batch of titles HOFD is the only one I consider a must see and will buy.

Me thinks it will be absolutely jaw dropping.

Longshot that's the first correct thing you've said in a month. :P

I have to agree, the BR titles are weak. Samsung has a $1000 pricetag. If you're going to push a format, from a company prone to FAILED formats, you'd better put out some kickass titles. None of the titles are compelling me to drop $1000 on a player. Now, if it were Star Wars, that would be a different story. T5E gets old after a while. Yes, it's visually great, but the movie isn't that tremendous. T1? Maybe. It's an old film on bad film stock. I've seen it on restored 35mm and it really isn't that impressive.

And what do you mean "more than 3?".

Sony creates a lot of formats, naturally some of them fail. But no one has a better record for success in creating or leading the adoption of new formats.

Remember, Babe Ruth also had records for the most strikeouts!

It's a dig at HD DVD.

And Nolan Ryan lost almost 300 games. ;)
