*OFFICIAL* Philips 42PF5321D/37 Thread

A new model introduce by philips: 42PF5321D/37. Which from all indications it is the replacement for the 42PF7320, which for many is plagued by Black Screen issues, digital noise, and pink speckle.

I owned the 42PF7320 for 7 months, and experienced all the above issues. So I returned the set for the newly released 42PF5321D/37. I am happy to report none of the 42PF7320 issues so far. The picture quality is better on the new philips 42PF5321

The glass in this 42pf5321D/37 is manufactured by samsung.

Some features absent in this new model vs. the 42PF7320 is:
NO cable card
Only 1 HDMI input
NO audio out (but there is a workaround thankfully)

There is already a firmware update issued 5/19/2006.

So far, I am much happier with this new Philips 42PF5321D/37.

Interesting.....the Phillips website reports that the 42PF5321D is 15:9 while the 42PF7320 is 16:9. It shows one less HDMI input as well as no firewire. Also, it reports that while the 42PF7320 is progressive, the 42PF5321D is not. I called Phillips cs and they told me that the 42PF5321D was a lower line model than the 42PF7320. Now this was from the mouth of a csr drone, so take it with a grain of salt. I did take mine back to Sam's opted to exchange for another one rather than swap it for the 42PF5321D. This was before AstroSaberIII review.

AstroSaberIII, you mention a reduction in digital noise with the new model? Could you elaborate on that? I watch mostly Dish over component and do notice some noise in the picture when sitting up close to the screen. Are you saying that this new model PQ is sharper when viewing non HD feeds very close to the screen and not a little 'fuzzy' like the 42PF7320? How does HD compare on the 42PF5321D compared to the 42PF7320 at regular viewing distance? One last thing, does the new model suffer from red push as the 42PF7320 does and are their any additional color balance controls to correct it?

Sorry for all the questions, but I have exchanged TVs twice at Sam's and would rather not a third time, however if the PQ difference on the new model is substantial then I guess I will have too.

I am trying to decide between the Toshiba 42hp66 and the Phillips
42PF5321D/37.

Both are 42" and about the exact same price. Is anyone familiar
with the Phillips versus this Toshiba and can you tell me which
do you think is the better plasma?

Thanks I really appreciate any feedback on this manner.

After more than a week, I am VERY happy with my new 42PF5321D/37. The clarity is amaizing. The de-interlacer is very good in the 5321 Philips, depending how much SD your going to watch, a good de-interlacer is key to a decent picture. The 7320 had a decent de-interlacer, but not as good as the new 5321

Very little image retention on the 42pF5321D/37, so video games in moderation should be OK. I've been playing Xbox360 for the last week, and not even a hint of image retention (Let alone burnin!!!)

THe 5321 is running a Samsung panel manufactured Jan 2006. Try to look between the vent holes in the Toshiba and see what glass they are using.

Image quality is much better with the Philips 42PF5321 vs the Philips 42PF7320 IMHO. Had the 7320 for 6+ months, and 5321 for under 2 weeks, both sets were calibrated.

What settings do you have your Philips at (color, bright, contrast, etc.) and is it possible to have different settings to watch HD content?

With the Philips 7320 and the 5321, i do notice a difference mainly with the bright/contrast from HD signals & standard def signals. When I calibrate it using HDMI or Hi-def over-the-air test patterns, amd then switch to SD image, the SD image is slightly brighter.

I have been playing with my Xbox 360, and i cannot be more pleased with the display image in this television, however i have found i little issue with the video output of the Xbox 360...

When i'm in the dashboard i can notice a little screen adjustment, either up or down, less than a milimeter i guess, it happens in-game too, but it is very hard to notice when you are playing, or when you are more than 2 meters away...

My question is, ¿is this an issue of the Tv or the 360?, ¿can you please confirm this?...

Thanks for your help...

I too had the same problem. I resolved it by changing the aspect on the TV from automatic, to widescreen. I also changed the xbox resolution from 1080i down to 720p and now everything seems to be fine.

Yes sir, it's been working 100%. No problems yet. I notice less image retention from static images then the 42PF7320.

7 months into ownership of this TV, I'm could not be more happier

Hey Astro,

This "workaround" you speak of regarding the audio out, how did you manage that? I have this TV and I have a SPDIF digital audio out, yet my receiver is analog. Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks

....by the way, I picked this model up . It has been working great ever since.

Same problem here, digital out, no digital in on my receiver...
Found this in one of his other posts, hope it helps you.

There is sale on the local retailer the price for the 42PF5321D is now $1,550, however I didn't find much information about this set.

BTW what's the workaround the audio out issue?

Is the 42PF5321D (1024 x 768) an step up or down model away from the 42PF7320 (862 x 480)?

there are no pannys better than 852 x 480 here in peru, so that's not an option for me at the moment. Am I doing a good investment with this plasma?
