Chris

Well, its the only way I will be able to get a blu-ray player, so I'm trying to be optimistic. Hey, I got my TV (a Philips 42" plasma) in a radio contest (Mike and Mike, ESPN2). All told, I've won over $10,000 in cash and merchandise on the Internet in the last 4 years. I'm currently waiting on $150 in gift cards that are coming from winnings on the internet.

I won my 1000 on ebay 275.00 a year ago factory reconditioned and had no problems with it until a few months ago when it started to not play a few of the new releases. I loaded the latest firmware from nov. and it has played flawlessly since. Just watched Pirates AWE and the video quality is jaw dropping even to my wife! Running a Barco data 808s onto an 8' DIY screen.

^^ So far, I like the BD-P1000 -- strikes me as a good player! It doesn't have the bells and whistles and there are a couple limitations (audio setup, no HD pillarbox, the "wrong" IR frequency), but I'm not seeing any serious reasons to complain about it. One day there will be a player that makes sense for me to move to, but until then, the BD-P1000 appears to be just fine !

Did they tell you what was wrong?

Probably the blue laser died which would explain why it had no problem reading CDs and DVDs (both using the red laser beam from the optical unit) while blu-ray has been unreadable (hence the "this disc cannot be read" pop up message). It's a well known problem on those first generation units and many early adopters have reported it already... Symptoms are always the same : At first the player seems to be picky with some titles and you need to reload them a couple of times to get the film started eventually. Then, with the time the problem gets worse regardless of the firmware updates performed... In the end no BD can be read.... No wonder why the player you bought was so cheap

They provided no information at all, however it was pretty obvious the drive had been switched (different sound) and I strongly suspect they changed the main board as well (since the firmware had been rolled back to October 2006 from October 2007.) My understanding is that swapping out those two items is pretty standard when there are disc reading problems. Saves a pile of tech time !

Yeppers, both my experience and my interpretation ! (The decline to BD playback death took less than two weeks )!

This is getting very frustrating. I upgraded my firmware so I could finally get it to play the latest Fantastic Four Movie.. Good. I just rented Die Hard (the latest) and I can't get it to play. I think I own a piece of junk.

i stand, 'corrected'

It took me 27 tries to start the movie. We now sit down to dinner. I have it on pause...wish me luck!

Wow! Then maybe I shouldn't give up on trying to play DAT. 27 tries?
How long did you wait and what were the symptoms?

Some titles take a reall long time is all.

Were you able to get the PotC films to play?

Nope. POTC1 and 2 yes, not 3. I really want to see DAT, less so POTC3

DAT was corrected with the Oct 12 release (together with FF:RotSS.) If your discs are both nice and clean, I'd say you have a hardware issue -- don't see how it can possibly be a question of FW.

Well everything else works except DAT and POTC3. On the Samsung site, even with the new firmware they note that there is a known issue with POTC3. I'm not jumping to the conclusion that it is a hardware issue.

Where does it quit for you on PotC 3 (that one doesn't have a long loading phase like the first two films)? I've read of an issue with disc two (the extra content), but haven't actually tried it yet.

With 1.3 firmware it just spits it out after, what appears to be, one cycle. Reverting to firmware 1.2, it gets further to the spinning coin.

When you say just one cycle, I'm guessing you mean where the colored dots move towards each during the first phase of the loading process. I'll try it on my other player and see if I get a different result. I honestly didn't even notice a spinning coin on PotC:AWE!

FYI: I observe an approximately nine second delay between pressing drawer close and the transition to the moving colored dots. I then observe an approximately nine second further delay before the beginning of the Disney advertising and film trailers. Do you observe something different?

Edit: After the advertisements, I ran into an approximate 25 second loading delay before the film menu appeared. Is this were you had the problem?

looks like firmware 1.4 has just been added to the website for download
post #1429 of 1912
Another download?

Good: The damn thing is not heavy enough to use as a boat anchor......

Thanks for the tip! I've one player updated (playing PotC:AWE) and the other player in progress

EDIT: Don't know what changed, but AWE plays fine on both players! Maybe it makes a difference for "Con Air", "The Rock" or "3:10 To Yuma"?

Any ideas?

No it's different. I don't get to the advertisements at all. One cycle meaning that the colored dots move toward each other for about 30 seconds and then the drawer opens and it says 'unplayable disc' or something similar.

Also, BTW, I sent you a PM
Just loaded the latest version PSD:80110.1 DMN:060929.01 everything seems to work great. Pirates AWE played with no problems with the 1.3 firmware and still does with the latest thankfully. I have not had any problems at all since the 1.3 version.
FWIW -- Since someone had mentioned having a problem with the PotC:AWE bonus content disc, I just tried playing it and didn't discover any issues. Of course, I really don't know if it would have played properly before the 1.4 update !

That was the problem I was having with the player I sent in for repair -- though at that point, it wouldn't play ANY BD, even those that were OK just one week before (SD DVD played fine!) I found polishing the data side lightly with a clean soft cloth did help before the ghost was completely given up.

Any chance of trying alternative copies of those two discs, or perhaps trying your copies in some other player (just to make sure the discs are in fact good)?

Thanks. Sent you PM plus. My DAT copy is from Netflix. I ordered a 2nd. With the new firmware (hopefully) and the 2nd disc from Netflix, we'll see if it's the hardware. I had another bad Blu-Ray disc from Netflix. Never had a problem with my HD DVD unit. Best to you.

I downloaded the Firmware 1.4

It is still almost impossible to get that Die Hard disc to play.
How long do you leave the white dots swirling for?
I left them swirling on "Sunshine" for at least five minutes the other day and then it just came on.
Yep to the above poster. Die hard and Sunshine still take forever to load for me. I never had them fail though.
hey all,
let me first say I am an hd dvd lover with an xa2, but I just jumped into blu also by purchasing one of these players. I kept telling myself I would by a blu player if i could find one for $100 and I caught a bd-p1000 on ebay the other night. I cought it about 10 minutes after it was listed with a buy it now for $100 shipped. The seller said occasionally the loading mechasnism stick. She did say it played fine 95% of the time, so I started thinking what she was experiencing was because of firmware.
Well, I got it and the first thing i tried was spidey 3. It wouldnt load, so I just did some searching and found how to check the firmare. The firmaware was from 7/27/06(If I remember correctly) so I updated to 1.4, I reloaded spidey 3 and it works perfect now. I dont know about any other movies yet but it seems to be a decent player. I was getting worried that at even at $100 I shouldnt have bought it with some of the comments you read on here about the player...

There are actually very few issues with this player.
