Longshot, How close do you sit to the 65 inch screen? Does the back of the set appear that it would sit in a corner well? Thanks

Kenking,

It was my family room. I had the lights off but it was not totally black. There was some ambient light from the kitchen. As a comparison I went downstairs to my dedicated theater room that is completely light controlled. I turned TPOTC on my Sim2 300e projecting onto a 100" screen. It looked good (the Sim2 is 720p) but simply lacked the detail and crispness of the 731.

CHAS,

I'm exactly 10' away from the screen. The set is much to big to go into a corner IMO. I'll post some pictures of my setup later.

I got some updated info today on timeframes. One of the high end stores in No. VA, The Big Screen TV Store, found out that the 732's went into production today (actually being built in the plant today) and will ship tomorrow with an ETA of 7-10 days. They were told the 831s will not begin production until the end of August so he predicted around 9/10 for arrival in the store. With the 731's this particular store got them about 2-3 weeks before Best Buy so it might be the same with the 732s (meaning BB might not get them 'till the 1st or 2nd week in September). I'm not a BB fan personally but they've so far offered me the lowest price on the 65731 so I'm hoping they'll do the the same on the 732.

One interesting tidbit from The Big Screen TV store. The manager told me that only the high end stores will get the 831s (like themselves and Tweeters). He said they'll be ordering 500 plus units with the plan to price their 831s at or near 732 prices in order to compete with the BB's of the world on price. However, if they're simply dropping from $4199 MSRP to the 65732 MSRP of $3699......but BB and others will sell the 65732 much cheaper than that.....have they really accomplished their goal? Anyway....just sharing what I've learned today.

This jives with what tenguru mentioned in this thread earlier about the MSRP of the 831 coming in around $3799. Of course I have not seen the 831 but it will be very difficult to resist at that price.

Thanks igorick for the info.... I'm willing to buy the 732 sight unseen knowing how good the 731 is...provided it's only 200 - 300 more than the 731..I wan a 57732!!

If BB gets the 732..then it's their Magnolia stores that will have them and magnolia usually list their TV at MSRP prices only. making it difficult to bargain/purchase.

I'm in the exact same boat. I have my best negotiated price on the 65731 in hand and only want to pay $200 more than that for the 65732. I think we'll be able to get there in time....just don't if it will happen when they first come out. But that's when I get into the start of football season vs getting the right price trade-off! Decisions.......

Question about the DVI input on this TV.

I am going to buy a cable to hook up to 8300HD box (TWC), but I want to know If I will get a better picture with an HDMI-HDMI cable vs an HDMI-DVI cable. From what I read on here, there may be problems with the DVI input.

Anyone know if an HDMI-DVI cable will get me as good of picture quality as the HDMI-HDMI cable?

I think DVI input is for computer only. HDMI from my Comcast DVR to HDMI in on the 731 works just fine. The HD programming is outstanding. See my above comments on Showtime HD. The standard def is for the most part pretty bad. But hey, I didn't buy a 65" HDTV to watch standard def.

I bought the TV. Got a great deal (since I am an employee). I'm very happy. I wish I would have waited for the WD-65732, but I'm really needing a TV. If it comes out within 30 days, and I can get as good of a deal, I'll bite, otherwise, this TV is mine!

Anyone have any settings they would like to share?? Maybe we should start a thread for settings/tweaks?

Do most owners leave it on brilliant, with the color temp set to high or low? what about the perfect color? play with that?

I am hoping that running a splitter before the box, and switching inputs to watch SD and analog TV, I will get better reception. Who knows.

Congrats on your new Tv. You will love it. Just feed this baby a good source and it will humm. With the money you saved buy the Toshiba HD A1 and you will be set.

I'll check my settings tonight and let you know. Do not use brilliant unless you are seated like 20' away. Go with normal and color temp of low. I did not touch perfect color.

Let us know how it works, my dad has an 4 year old Philips which the SD is really really terrible. I am talking a lot of snow, you really cant watch them. I would like to improve them a little for him if possible.

Back to my point....

The problem with SD channels on the 731 isn't that bad is it?

Thanks
Jim

This film is an excellent test for dark levels and detail especially the opening scene in the Garden of Gethsemane. The smoke or mist had a three dimensional look and shadow detail was pretty darn good. Other scenes such as the crucifixion was so lifelike it was very difficult to watch.

I don't know how much the dark detailer will improve upon the 731 but I'm extremely pleased with this set. I was all set to trade mine in for the 831 (sight unseen) but I will at least wait and compare the two before making a decision.

thats funny cause I watched that movie last night only because it looked so amazing ....probably the most impressive thing i have seen so far. it made his hideous wounds look even worse.

IMO yes it is. I have Comcast and all movie channels that are not HD are terrible. Same with CNN, Fox, MSNBC. The DVDO VP 30 is supposed to really improve pq on standard def but I'm not willing to drop another $2,000 to get better standard def.

One of the major reasons I bought the Mits over the samsung was how it handled the SD picture quality. I thought that with samsung's DNIe off, (which is how most users suggest) the Mits handled SD better. Even more amazing, was when I changed the output resolution of the box, down to 420p, it looked better. Nothing amazing, but better.
I appreciate your honest opinions on the SD PQ, at least now I know what to expect when I get mine. I still have to save up the money and start negotiations to get a good price...

Thanks
Jim
SD PQ is a problem on all RPTV sets not just the 731. Again this is a non issue for me. What the Mits does do well is shine with HD content. Mix in the features and price and it is a class leader IMO.

Got a call from the store I preordered my WD-65831 from and they said the set would be in Tomorrow, Aug 15th. She said they would be calling me to set up delivery. Very interesting. I hope they are right!!!

Fitterguy,

Who did you buy from? This goes against several posters here who have talked to Mist dealers and are claiming Sept. 10th delivery. One poster (teachsac) is a dealer and he has no idea. Another poster talked to an authorized Mits dealer and said the 831's aren't even in production yet! Are you also aware there is talk the MSRP on the 65831 will be dropped by $400-$500?

I'll laugh out loud if they tell you delivery will be the 1st week of September!

I received an e-mail from Gregg Loewen at Lion Audio Video Consultants, Inc. today because I was inquiring about what DLP RPTV he would recommended between the HP Pavilion 6580n, the Samsung HL-S6187, and the Mitsubishi WD-65731. Between the HP and the Samsung, he said he would go Samsung because it offered more flexibility in terms of calibration. What surprised me, was that he said, "Historically, I am not a big fan of Mits dlps. They are very poorly sealed and need to be opened up every 6 months for a good cleaning of the optics".

Does anyone know if the new Mitsubishi 731 series has a better seal than their previous DLPs?
OK, so I just called over to my local Tweeter and they have the 52631 on display. They appear to be 2-3 weeks out on the 732 series. I'm trying to get straight what the differences are on all these models. Can anyone give me a definitive answer on the differences between the 631 and 731 series?

I know the 732 adds a couple things beyond the 731, but all I've seen on 631 vs. 731 so far is that the 631 has a 52" screen model and the 731 doesn't.

I will probably take a trip over there tonight, but hopefully will get an answer here first so I know what I am missing out on with the 631.

My local BB has the 65731 on display, but no A2000 to compare it to. Tweeter has a better layout for direct comparisons anyway.

I thought they were all made by Texas Instruments. So wouldnt all the DLP light engines hve the same problems.>?

Saw the Mits, both the 631 and 731 and they looked better than the Sony for that particular feed. I hate the Sammy and the Mits is 12 bit which i feel makes the difference between the two. Another big plus for the Mits is the DVI/PC connection, i plan on using the display as an HTPC. I guess the main question is how much difference the "Dark Detailer" makes.

you should be nervous. Do a search in the forum on green haze issue and you will be overwelmed.

TI makes the chip not the light engines.

Just came back from BB and the salesman looked up his system and see that they do have the 65732...not sure when it'll arrive... BUT there was no signs of the 57732

I live in the Atlanta area and we have Fry's, BB, CC, Brandsmart and Tweeter... but not sure which one will have the 57732. I prefer brandsmart because of their prices...but don't think they'll have the 57732

Just got back from Tweeter. They had the Samsung LED 5679 (don't want to get it, but I wanted to see it), the Sony A2000, and the 52631. I mostly compared the Sony and the Mits. They weren't side by side, so it was tough to compare. Unfortunately, I don't think it helped my decision process much. I still don't know what to get. I'd like to see the 732, but I also want a TV before football starts, which could be cutting it close. Tweeter was expecting to have them mid September, so I'd have to find someone that gets them sooner, at least to look at. I want to know what features are different between the 631, 731 and 732 as well.

Zarak...did u try toplay with the settings on all the sets? I really would try to play with the setting (brightness, contrast etc.) to getthe best PQ for that set .... watch it for 10 minutes ... then move to the next set and repeat... compare only 2 sets at a time and eliminate the one u least like.
You for certain pq issue like noise, brightness, dark details...and then hopefully u'll have a better idea of what u'd liked...that's how I do it anyway
Good luck
