Leave it in hyper-brite mode and put on your cheap sunglasses...but seriously, if it bothers you that much try watching it off axis slightly with the suggestions Jeff made.

If that does not do it for you get the Panasonic if you get a PDP. Maybe RP is not for you. The other thing to consider is FP.

I can see artifacts from every screen material. I would only consider direct view if that artifact is a deal breaker.

CRT isn't an option. I'm either going to get used to it or go back to PDP.

LCD, PDP and CRT are all direct view when they do not project an image.

Yes . . . and CRT is not an option.

But, get this, the A2000 has the green stain on the upper right hand corner. It never seems to end. But what i did learn today was if you want a 60" SXRD save your money and buy the A2000.

Assuming the XBR2 has the same propensity for green blobs as the A2000. I haven't been following that issue as closely lately but from what I could tell the XBR2s haven't had this problem or even a greenish tint at startup . . . yet. Too soon to tell, but if better QC on those sets eliminates the problem it would be worth the premium over the A2000 and provide a worthy competitor to the Mits.

Does anyone know how to turn Demo Mode back on?

Well, my comparision was really between the 2 Sony's. The Mitsubishi next to it was the lower end model of the line. Having seen the 831 diamond series i can honestly say i would get the 831 over the XBR2 based on equal PQ but the Mits being the better value.

That's my opinion also. But each person should make his own determination, based on the relative weights he applies to each evaluated parameter, and based on what his own eyes see. Most people would be happy with either set.

I don't really know about the site, but the retail store is OK. I was in there Saturday. They have been in business longer than I have lived here.

I've had my 65831 for two days now.....tried the Smeeg settings...did not really like them....not much pop to the picture on my set. I must admit that I like the Brilliant setting...the pop is great with this setting. The only complaint I have is with the grass during the football games today. If I just watch the grass...it looks like its dancing around. Of course....if I dont pay attention to it...it is no big deal. So do you use the Brilliant setting...or are you able to get the same pop on Bright or Natural? Thanks...and this is one gorgeous TV! Went with the BDI 9640 stand and friends are very impressed...as I am!

Did anyone here bother with the 731 line? I'm looking online and it looks like I can get the 65731 cheaper than the 57732. It would be nice to have the bigger TV, but if the extra modes on the 732 really make the picture that much better, I'd rather have the 732.

The 732 series has "dark detailer" which will give you better shadow detail.

Popular thinking is that the 731 (and the Circuit City models) lack some features considered essential. Aim higher. You'll be glad you did.

Turn off SharpEdge.
Turn off DeepFieldImager (DFI)

I haven't heard of anyone using Brilliant picture mode. You may be the Lone Ranger on this one.

I have three options.
1) I can just live with it and try to quit thinking about it.
2) I can call an authorized repair center and see if the warranty will cover it.
3) I can return it to Vanns and eat the shipping costs, then go buy it local for a few hundred dollars more.

Could you live with it from that photo if it was yours or would you return it?

Try option 2 first. The factory warranty will cover it and likely fixable in the home.

When I first got my 65831 I was in the same boat I liked the Bright and Brillian
much better than Nature. The Bright and Brillian seems to give more pop in the
pictures. After playing with it for 2 - 3 weeks than realize the Nature setting is
the way to go, it gives more neutral look. Yes, Nature setting still have less
pop, but everything looks real, on one football broadcast last week,
there were shoots in the anouncer booth, these people look like they are
sitting in front of me. The skin tones look more real compare to Bright mode.
What I see is in Bright and Brillian mode, the background is darken and added
some color to the focus image to show more pop, but cause black crush in the
background and little unrealiztic look on image. I think that why people said
after they have their TV calibrated they don't feel right at first, but once
they give some time, they said the image look more real. I wonder what
mode UMR used after he calibrated the 732 and 831.

I do use Bright mode when I play XBOX 360 and some HD broadcast
with bright images to get more pop.

Yes Cap.....it wont be the first time I've been the Lone Ranger!
When I turn off the DFI...it seems to lose the pop too. I really enjoy bright vivid colors...not cartoony but probably a step above natural. Any ideas on how I would achieve the pop on the Natural setting?

How? Did you go in and mess around in the SM? If so that is all on you. I used his basic settings as a starting point, tweaked them to my liking and conditions.

Thanks Smeeg, my set looks great.

I've added the following information to the FAQ:

According to page 97 of the 831 User's Manual, the 831s support the following video input signals:

HDMI: 480i60, 480p60, 720p60, 1080i60, 1080p24, 1080p30, 1080p60
DVI-I: 480p60, 600p60, 720p60, 768p60, 1024p60, 1080p24, 1080p30, 1080p60
Component: 480i60, 480p60, 720p60, 1080i60
Video/S-Video: 480i60

I couldn't find where the manual specifies what video signal formats are supported over firewire, but I assume it would be the same as for HDMI.

Another cool feature of the TV I discovered, but have not seen discussed: If you press the pause button on the remote, it temporarily freezes the picture. You can unfreeze by pressing the pause button again, or just wait for it to timeout.

I own the 65831, So is there any advantage to converting my component cables to HDMI or are those signals only supported from HDMI to HDMI? I am using component as the max option for all of my equipments outs. At this time I have a comcast STB set at 1080I (was told by comcast that they pass a native signal up to 1080I at that setting), component from STB to TV. Also using component for DVD Player (sony DVP9000 max res 480p ) to TV. Pretty much happy with all other than 8 year old sat receiver on S-video SD picture SUCKS! Any thoughts on the above or any thoughts on an up-converter for SD signals?? Hell is there any such thing? Thanks to everyone for their Pennies, Nickels and Dimes worth

Well.. I just bought the Mitsubishi WD-65731 today, and it will be delivered saturday! Can't WAIT.. OTOH, I've got a LOT of rewiring to do.. ugh. ah well.. I think I can deal with it.
Ok.. I did a search and I guess it must be down.. but I wanted to ask.. where is the best place to get bulbs for the WD-65731? I mean, I'm in no rush, but.. I'm getting the tv saturday, and I get one replacement under the warranty, but.. any idea(s) on price of the bulbs for this set, and the best place(s) to get them? I was also wondering, how many of you have an extra one around the house, for when your bulb goes?.
Man.. I am SOOO excited!

I am one of the people who has ben bothered by fan noise on my 65831. I called a Mits service center and the tech stopped by today. I already had the tv on and when he walked up to the tv he immediately noticed it. He said he has worked on several of the current yr models (not sure which ones) and hasn't noticed the fan noise before. After removing the back of the TV he unplugged the lamp fan (apparently there are several fans in the TV) and the noise immediately dropped off. He ordered a replacement lamp fan (through Mits) and it should be here within a week.

The sound from the fan is more of an annoyance than anything. I hear it during quiet movie passages or when the volume is low during nighttime viewing. If the guy had walked in and said "this is how these things sound" I would have dealt with it. I love the picture and it wouldn't have been a deal breaker for me. It was just nice to have my concerns(hearing) validated.

Anyway, I'll post when he installs the new one and let everyone know if there's a change. If not...I'll have to figure out some sort of noise dampening solution.
