I have the SA8300 HD DVR set to 1080i only , and mostly all of my sd channels are very very good , no grainy look at all. In fact there are quite a few sd channels that are pretty darn close to looking like hd channels! This tv is amazing. My hd channels simply blow me away and also have blown my guests away , and most of them own hdtv's!!
I only had issues when i picked all of the inputs (480 , 720 , 1080) on the SA8300 , it would take a few seconds when changing channels and the tv would blink twice before the channel appears , so when i only chose 1080 , it took care of that problem , and also in my opinion it made my sd channels look much better.
I guess my connections are also helping out. I have the cable connected to a line conditioner before connecting to the stb. All of my cables are hdmi.
I never noticed any tearing or artifacts , never see rainbows , and we are still in awe of the picture we get no matter what we watch. Even when we zoom or stretch the picture it still looks damn good! Simply amazed , i tell everyone i should be a spokesman for these tv's lol , i even have my sister's husband purchasing this tv now after changing his mind from the samsung 6188 , but beleive me it didnt take much convincing once they saw my tv , their expressions told the story , not to mention that i had to pick their jaws up off the floor afterwards LOL.
