Toshiba DLP 52HM84 Problem

I have a Toshiba 52HM84 that has been nothing but problems. It just went out of warranty and of course it blew out its bulb (shattered the bulb in the housing) after only about 1500 hours. I ordered a new bulb from an eBay vendor. It arrived in a Toshiba factory sealed box. The vendor had an excellent (100%) rating on almost 4000 transactions. I installed it and it works about 50% of the time. On times it works - everything looks good and the screen is bright. When it doesn't work, there is about a three second whine/buzz noise, then the green and red lights flash (manual says that indicates a bulb problem), then shuts off and attempts to turn back on. Even when it's not working, turning it on and off a few times will normally make it work (which I'm sure isn't good for the new bulb). Anyone else have a similar problem or know what I might do to fix it?

Thanks so much for any info,

This is a new one for me. I have the 95 version and just blew a bulb, after 2 months of viewing! I'm waiting for the bulb as we speak.

I would call Toshiba and explain your discontent. Possibly, they will honor your warranty if they already have you on file. Good luck.

Hi! I have the buzzing problem now and the tv won't turn on. (Same model). I thought is was the lamp so I bought a new one and installed it and still getting the buzzing problem. What was the diagnosis and remedy?

I am having this very same issue! The bulb looks fine (not busted like my LAST one) and when I attempt to turn on the tv I get a buzzing sound from the left side of the tv for about 3 seconds and then the LED code: solid red and flashing green (indicates issue w/ bulb but I don't think that's the issue) and then resets and does it all over again (buzz and led code). I already bought a new tv (it's on the way from Amazon) but I would like to find out what the heck's wrong w/ this set without having to pay a tech $75 to look at it. Anyone have any issue/resolution as to why this tv's doing this? Thanks in advance for any comments/help.

I would look more toward the ballast than the bulb.

I am having the same problem too - buzzing problem but won't turn on. AND THE SAME MODEL! called local repair service and service call is $125!! This is in addition to the new bulb. Anyone with similar problems and successfully solved it? Would really appreciate any advice.

52HM94 - exact same problem. Started happening with original bulb (2300 hours ). Replaced bulb w/ new one - same problem. Put original bulb in - same problem. Service Tech came out - both bulbs OK, ballast OK, color wheel OK - swapped old to new bulb again. Puzzled look on his face, said maybe Light Engine, left - $95 thank you very much. TV would eventually cycle on after 2 - 10 reset attempts and work fine. The past 2 days, the buzz is there upon power up, 1 reset and then TV comes on. Called Toshiba ( 4th time ) - usual response - suggested I call a different shop - on my dime again. Guess I can't complain as the TV works. Be nice to identify the cause of the noise.

Nobody ,hardly, sells TOS DLPs. Where'd you get these?

Sorry - I haven't checked this thread in awhile. Here's an update. I had a repair technician, who, with all due respect should have retired 25 years ago. He almost knocked the set over (I caught it) and cut his hand and bled all over my carpet. He also wanted to leave my set disassembled on my living room floor for three weeks. After all that he did absolutely nothing to fix it and in fact made the problems worse. I will never buy another Toshiba anything. I got tired of the good for nothing, fuk-ing piece of sh1t television and literally threw it in the trash! I was so happy to see that thing getting smashed to bits in the back of the garbage truck. I now have a Samsung plasma which is absolutely wonderful. So that's what I did.

Sorry for going off on a rant.

I was wondering if anyone ever got a decisive answer/resolution on this issue. My 52hm94 had been buzzing since shortly after the first and only lamp replacement (June '06). It finally died this past Monday and I'm trying to get my Svc guy out here (good thing my ext svc is still barely active).
Last time I talked to the guy at the only Svc repair place in my area for Tosh, he thought it might have been the light engine, but he never followed up with me on the issue. This attempt is pretty slow going as well, but I cannot let him off the hook this time due to the set being totally dead in the water.
Recycling the power is not saving me this time. And the LEDs are not signaling that the Lamp is part of the issue. The LEDs aren't signalling that anything is wrong actually.
This is where I did my research to make my purchase decision yrs ago. So... long time reader, first time poster.

Sounds like a bad ballast. I had a HM95 at the shop today, same issue. I can find no part number for the ballast board and that board comes pre-installed on the new engines so I'm guessing they don't make it available as a separate part. You have to put in the engine.

Thank you. My Svc Tech stated the same, either the ballast that is part of the light engine board or some controller board (both being pricey items). He's got a call into Tosh Tech Svcs to get their recommendation as well. I'll make sure to post the results, but it appears a new light engine fixes many things (where they're not modular/component-ized in design), so I'm not sure if I'll ever know which part of the light engine failed.
