Westinghouse 42" LCD w/1080p Part II, MSRP ONLY - Page 182

I hate to ask a question thats been asked 10,000 times, and I will read this thread but for now...

Where can I find a manual for the 42" tv? I got a open box/display model with no extras. Just a power cable, remote.

How do you tell which version/firmware you have?

Thanks guys. Ive been eyeballing this tv for a while now, to use as a monitor/360/dvd. 12% off at best buy if you have a best buy rewards zone.

If you have any professional color calibrating stuff and can find the right colors for color #1, let us know what they are.
Until I can find some good settings, I think I'll just stick with color 2

agreed - and color 2 looks decent enough.

Ive been lurking in these forums for awhile and decided to finally post now that I own a LVM42. My firmware is @1.00 and the HDMI port is pretty messed up. I'm not sure if its my PS3 or my TV. Whenever I start up NBA 2K7 in 1080p the screen cant resolve the resolution. It will go black/fuzzy and come to normal non-stop. CoD3 and Resistance seem to do ok in 720p after some switches of the inputs, but anythign in 1080p gives me a lot of trouble. Tried a bunch of stuff you guys said might work like unplugging it etc. Emailing Westinghouse yielded no answer so I'm going to call next week. Any suggestions in the mean time? I have my XBOX360 in the VGA slot, my comp hooked up as the LVM as a 2nd monitor through DVI1, and a PS2 and a Wii in the component slots with no problems. Is it possible to display 1080p with a HDMI > DVI cable in the DVI2 slot? Thanks o_o-b

ur solution is gonna be HDMI > DVI cable in the DVI2 slot.hdmi wont work with your ps3 has problems.

Ok, I have version 1.19.

I just got home, and when I turned on my monitor, it was on DVI1, and the computer was off, so I switched to DVI2 (computer that always stays on) and the monitor flicked on and off several times. I had to go through the inputs once to fix it. Should this monitor be on a battery backup? I think it is right now.

to me, people seem to blow banding issues out of perportion. In both the sets I have I can see what people are talking about. However these are only things I notice when I bump up the contrast and brightness to 100 which I will never ever do O.o.......

All right, and does HDMI>DVI carry a sound signal? Just covering my tracks before I go buy stuff this weekend.

I think you're right, I looked at my Dell 24" monitor today (what I'm using until I get my 42w2 back) and noticed it has some banding. I've had this thing for more than a year, and I just noticed it! I can only see it ever-so-slightly on a blank screen with the backlight on, and even then its kind of hard to see.

I am seriously thinking about buying this TV, should I be worried about all these issues you guys talk about such as the banding? I would also be ordering it online from page computers. Is that safe? Also, how is the SD quality of the picture?

OSD = On Screen Display (for menu settings)

Question,

Hoping someone can answer. I am unable to enter SM on component 1 or 2 is this common or another anomaly. DVI 2 is fine to enter SM mode and it retains my settings but if I try to do this with component it will not work. Upon trying, the Westy logo flashes but when I hit the curved arrow key to bring the SM up nothing occurs and the screen just goes completely white.

Second I put a dvd in to watch tonight using component out from my Samsung DVD-R135, in the menu I set and tried both 720p and 1080i mode to upconvert. Once the DVD plays I am stuck with the movie playing in a smaller box within the screen and I am forced to use the fill mode on the TV remote?? Is this normal? I was watching Pirates of the carribean and I figured the flick would be 16:9 with bars on top and bottom. Am i missing something here or is this due to the sets 1920x1080 res that you must use the fill mode??

Hoping someone takes time to read and respond, this morning I tried again and I noticed that with the TV set to standard once I select component 1 to watch a dvd it auto switched to fill mode to display the dvd that I plkaced in player which was Sin City and it showed it in a 16:9 format so I am assuming this is normal??????????????????????????????

I thought it was the TV not the PS3?

No one really answered my questions. Does anyone else have the Best Buy Replacement plan for this TV? Since i have this HDMI issue can I go in to BB and get a new Westy? If so...Should I? or should i just pay 8 bucks and get a HDMI > DVI cord and hope my DVI2 doesn't ALSO have problems.

P.S. my firmware is 1.19

I've got a 1.19 set and just got a PS3. I have the PS3 dashboard set to 1080p and don't see any sparkling issues using HDMI. I don't have a 1080p game but I did also test a blu-ray movie with the PS3 and again had no issues. I'm just wondering if anyone else has a 1.19 set without any 1080p problems? I ordered mine from bb.com back in June when they had the one day sale but didn't get it delivered until late July since it was backordered. I'm thinking maybe I got one of the last 1.19 sets made and so it was fixed.

I do have one other question. Both my cable box and PS3 have an HDMI port but no DVI. Since my westy only has 1 HDMI I'm thinking about getting an HDMI>DVI adapter and have my TV use the DVI port. I'm planning on buying the adapter from monoprice.com but I was hoping you guys could tell me exactly what I need to buy.

P.S. I won't lose any picture quality using the HDMI>DVI adapter right?

It sounds to me like you are getting 480p output over component from the DVD player. Maybe that's the best your DVD player can do over component.

Am having a problem in which at power up there is a loud buzzing noise coming from the rear of the panel. I have done some troubleshooting, and disconnected everything from the panel and turned it on, and it still made the noise, as its powering up it seems go get louder for the first 3 minutes, and then it dies down and its almost completely gone but can be heard very faintly. I also suspected the problem could be from interference , and went ahead and disconnected EVERYTHING that is around the display and the noise is still there. Can anyone advice on this issue? Thank you.

In order to access SM through a specific input, in your case the component input, the input has to be active meaning something should be playing on that specific input. Otherwise, you will get the burn in mode in the form of a white screen.

It might be just me. But the few sets I've dealt with have the faint buzzing in the back. However, with a majority of them you can't hear it unless you put your ear at the back of the set or be positioned behind.

I assume this is due to the backlight. At least one tech told me this is the cause of the buzzing. However, since they seem mostly clueless at times. I can't take it as they say.

Yours might be a extreme case of the what I described above and it is hard to say without seeing it. But if it bothers you enough. Then talk to the place you bought it from or Westinghouse support.

You could attempt to get Best Buy to replace it. However, if it is not in stock then they might just end up offering you credit towards something comparable. Mileage for this type of thing varies.

There is a chance that DVI2 might also exibit the same problem since it is one the same board as the HDMI. But there have been people without problems on DVI2 even when they have problems on the HDMI.

Banding is uncontrollable. It all seems to be the luck of the draw. As is with the dead pixels.

SD is watachable. But some people would say it looks horrendous.

Read Page Computers return policies and customer reviews of the site. Also take into consideration that shipping this thing back and forth if there is any problem is a pain in the ass. A lot of people seem to have bought from Crutchfield due to their support and return policies.

Its funny because I talked to Westinghouse and they told me that the backlight transformer does emit high frequency noise, they told me most people over the age of 14 cant hear it but if I am hearing it they recommend replacing it. The funny thing is that there are only two people who confirm the noise, my self and a another friend of mine both 22 years of age. My father / mother etc tell me it is the quietest piece of equipment they have EVER seen. So, what do you guys make of this?

I'm 25, and I can only hear it with one ear (my more sensitive ear) and only when I put it right up to the set, I mean right next to the set. Comparatively, my Comcast DVR box sounds like a battlefield compared to the westy, so using that comparison my TV is extremely quiet.

Getting to the service menu to set RGB color, unable to get past step 1 of the service menu instructions:

1. With the set OFF, Press and Hold the VOL - + Input buttons on the right side of the set. Holding these buttons, press POWER.
First of "vol -" and "input" are on the right side of my remote, second by power I'm assuming the "red button", third this does noting had 5 people try nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?

The color on my set sucks (9800, 9600 or 6800), I want 7500 and need the service menu to set that.

Yea, I know it probably covered in many places, but did you know there are over 180 pages to this form and searching did not locate it.

Well luckily my HDMI to DVI cable worked perfectly with my PS3 and LVM42 and it displayed 1080p on 4 movies and 2 games(Marvel & NBA 2K7) just fine. Just ordered a new sound system so I can get a digital optical ran from my PS3 to a amp/reciever. Then I can see if I can even use the HDMI port on this TV. The amp/reciever I got has a HDMI out so I'll be able to see if it can even sync that.
