Westinghouse 42" LCD w/1080p Part II, MSRP ONLY - Page 3

I'd asked in the original thread about losing picture whenever there was a bright flash. Just thought I'd let anyone who cares know that it wasn't the TV's fault. Somehow my receiver (JVC 8020 something something something...) was doing it. Plugging straight into the TV solves the problem (though now I can't use my receiver has a video switcher..... [insert pouty face]).

Apologies if this has been discussed but a quick search and comb thru a few of the 100+ pages of this thread didn't turn up an answer.

Got my set today, works great. However, when using component inputs, the monitor seems to lose sync if there is a sudden scene change from dark to very bright, or an on-screen camera flash, lightning, bright explosion, etc... Team America: World Police was especially bad but there's a few moments in Finding Nemo where it happened too. My DVD player and SA 8300 HD both produced the problem when using YPbPr. The screen goes blank for about 1 second when this happens. I managed to bring up the system info screen during one of these drops and the resolution was reported as 0x0. I suspect the quick flash makes the monitor think the input is changing rez on it. The phenomenon is repeatable - every time the flash happens, the picture drops. The problem goes away if I use HDMI, DVI, or composite. I presume that's because the digital signals flag themselves unambiguously as whatever resoltuion they are carrying, and of course composite input is always going to be 480i, so no confusion there. Problem is I really want to use YPbPr for various reasons I won't go in to here.

Any thoughts?

I'm having the same problem on DVI 1 using Directv Toshiba DST-3100. I would like to know also if anyone else experiencing this problem. I haven't tried changing it to DVI 2 yet. It seems like not that many people here using the DVI inputs.

Peter S posts got nuked again, I've been on this site for years but this is getting a little sad, he is just trying to help us out. Is there another forum we can talk about this TV that won't delete lock threads just for those that are asking for help?

PeterS seems to be the guru of this Westinghouse. I keep seeing quotes from him giving screen shots and passing more valuable information out to us, but then I cannot find those threads that were quoted and I don't see any links to his screen shots?

Just call Logitech Harmony tech support, get past level one by telling them you have to change the codes for the inputs of your TV. Once you get to level 2 support (in canada), tell them how the TV works and they can set the remote up to work just like the original remote does (ie YPbPr1, and YPbPr2 on one button, all the digitals on another button). Make sure to tell them that the TV remembers the last input it was on in YPbPr, and DVI.

I doubt they would update their database after just my call, but if enough call to make this change to this TV, perhaps they will update their main database so that it will work for everyone.

My Harmony 880 works great and always goes to the correct input.

Where are peters post in this thread that showed the 1.18 service menu then? they were in this thread earlier today

May I also suggest that we all collectively try to figure out the service menu codes. In many other sets it is some combination of holding down the right buttons at the right time. These buttons may or may not be on the remote.

I've been trying to "happen" upon the codes, but haven't any sucess. With as many people who now have this TV, evolution says one of us will eventually find the code. Parallel processing by means of multiple users might prove useful in this case.

So start pushing buttons!

Now that we know firmware version 1.18 exists, has Westinghouse support finally stated it exists? I just called Westy on Monday and the rep said no update is available to fix the lockup problem. The fact that the rep minimized the lockups as being a feature was most frustrating...stating that the set is sensitive to power fluctuations and I should try connecting its own surge protector. This explanation is a ridiculous excuse to a bug in the Westy's firmware. Why can't this company simply admit a problem and implement a timely solution?

After having my second lockup today in 1 week of ownership, this problem requires a solution. Today the set locked up while on. Neither the remote nor the buttons on the Tv would respond. Has anyone experienced this type of lockup? I only thought the lockups occurred when trying to power on the TV.

do i even want this tv now that it has been discontinued? there's probably a reason no?

best buy is the only place that carries westinghouse i know of other than online. damnit now i'm stuck without a tv grrrrrrr how come there are no other good 1080ps anywhere?

Order through crutchfield, the price is the same as BB plus a good mail in rebate, crutchfield is also known to have much better service.

thanks i am ready to pull the trigger however if i get the service plan what happens if i get a tv with a dead pixel...if the tv is discontinued they won't have any to replace mine soon right? is there anyway i can find out if the tv they are shipping has the 1.18 firmware first?

I'm posting this out of frustration -
I didn't learn ANYTHING, even after reading Part-I, Part-II, now this Part-III threads.

Only people bragging about how cheap this tv, how much discount they got, what they consider problems with their set, etc. Absolutely no technical/practical information.

I wish there's one thread stickied, that contains all revisions of Firmwares, potential/reported problems, SM code, calibration tricks, etc.

This is my first HDTV purchase, and I wish there were more information available on the internet as far as calibration, ICC profile, etc.

Will anyone that have any REAL knowledge of this TV (either from experience or from work), please step forward?

I have stated this fact a week ago but no one wanted to hear it. PeterS is so full of BS about how he wants to help people out here but instead he helps himself out. Charging people money for a service code. That is so low and grimey! I am glad you finally got exposed for the phoney that you are.

From what Peter said previously,1.18 is not available, it's still being internally tested, it does fix the lockup issues. No way to find out what firmware you have until you get the TV. No current plan from westinghouse in getting firmware updates but someone will figure out someway to do it sooner or later.

Crutchfield has a policy about dead pixels something like 3 or 4 grouped together or one dead center

Could someone please confirm that there is a fair amount of overscan when using the component inputs in Standard Definition? When in "standard" mode, the overscan is evident to me by observing the position of the station logos: too close to the the lower right corner compared with other display devices I have. When I switch to "fill" mode I see exactly the same amount of overscan; the picture is simply streched to fill 16:9. This is counter to what I was led to believe in the previous thread; I thought I would be toggling between seeing the entire 525 lines (standard) and several percentage points of overscan (fill; I didn't know that fill added a horizontal stretch, unacceptable to me). I would love to get the entire broadcast picture (including the line of hash!) but I guess I would have to be feeding the unit through the DVI or HDMI inputs?

PS: I saw a HUGE amount of overscan in the Best Buy store in HD fed through the component inputs. This was readily apparent by comparing the Westinghouse to ANY of the various nearby HD displays. Does the fill/standard switch function in HD when fed by component? If yes, what does it do?

I would just wait until westinghouse release's the firmware. They should fix the problem FREE. There product is defective and they will fix it.

Received today my 42", firmware 1.16, connected to my HTPC via DVI.
Didn't check for a dead pixels yet, but quick look didn't reveal any.

I also own Sceptre 37", so want to compare. (My Sceptre didn't have
dead pixels, but then after about two months of use developed two
stuck ones).

As far as banding goes, I do not see any difference between Sceptre and Westi.

Is there any program so I can check for ghosting? I may be mistaken, but I do
believe that Westi unit has noticeable ghosting...

Also, my Tivo was connected to S-Video input on Sceptre, and I can say for sure
that Sceptre displayed SD via S-Video much better than Westi, way sharper, and
less blocky. I was under impression that Faroudja chipset on Westi is supposed
to make SD to actually look better, not worse???... Or I'm missing something?

I have read here before that the Westinghouse uses Sony's remote code. So I purchased a Sony 5 disc up-converting dvd player and it does in fact control the Westinghouse, power on/ off, volume, input select, and etc. I have a Harmony 880 also but use it for the components in my living room.

Off-topic: does the oppo come with dvi cables or hdmi? I am wondering what input I'll be using on the westie and wondering if I have to order cables for the oppo to work.

where is the best deal for the oppo?

Regarding the firmware upgrade I learned from Crutchfield that Westinghouse is working on a process that will have Westinghouse service people do field upgrades. Based on this information I decided to keep the monitor...

I had the same problem with my projector. I found out that it was the cable. I was using a cheap cable that could transmit the bandwith that is sometimes required ... what cable are you using?

My cables actually are kinda cheap, but even using the cheapies, as long as I bypass my receiver, it works fine. I suppose it's possible there is some bandwidth loss in the cables plus a little more in the receiver such that maybe nicer cables would let me put the receiver back in the loop. I'm probably not willing to spend the money to find out though. I'll just wait till I get an HDMI switching/upconverting receiver down the road.

Has anyone calibrated there sets with AVIA or DVE? If so can you please type down your settings and Backlight? Thanks, just want to have some ideas where to start at.

The Poughkeepsie BB sent me to the BB in Yonkers because the computer showed that they had 2 Westys in stock. I called Yonkers before I drove down there and they confirmed they had it and promised that they would put one aside for me. When I got there it turned out that the computer had been wrong.... I ended up buying from Crutchfield, though it was slightly more than at other online stores, but I just totally trust them. Needless to say that they credited me the difference when they dropped their price and they also offered to take it back if Westinghouse does not come through with the firmware upgrade...

After carefully screening my Westy I found 5 stuck pixels. In normal viewing from 7 feet I cannot detect them. Seeing 5 stuck pixels out of more than 2 million is - at least for me - impossible...
