Working for a big time retailer, I bought a pair of Yamaha NS Series 3-way bookshelf speakers back in the late '90s. They retailed new for $100. At the end of the summer, they discounted them to $75 or so because of the new model coming in. Then, they had a back to school sale and then my employee discount. I ended up buying them for $44 including tax and thought it was a great deal (I was a poor college student).

I've since moved on to some better equipment, but a friend of mine got these and a pair of KLH satellites for free. I tend to think that my used stuff deserves a good home, and can't part with them for only a few bucks- worth it for me to give them free to a good person who'll appreciate them.

Although I didnt purchase the setup, I informed a friend of mine of a local ad for Paradigm speakers.

We drove down to the sellers house and picked up a pair of Titans, Atoms and a CC170..... along with a Yamaha Pro Logic receiver that was in excellent shape, he paid him $145.
Cant go wrong with that.

Although I'm a dealer for API products, my best deal from them actually came after the product line was discontinued - I made the purchase personally via the Athena Clearance website.

Earlier this year I got a new pair of Athena SCT series S3/P3's for $670 shipped (Retail was $1800).

I won't mention the deals I've taken advantage of from being a retailer

I've gone a little speaker crazy in the past two months.. updating my previous post here's what I've gotten:
2 pair Polk RT7, $100 per pair (retailed for $500/pair)
1 pair Polk RT1000i, $100 (retailed for $1200/pair)
1 pair Polk RT800i, $150 (retailed for $1000/pair)
1 Polk CS245i, $50 (not sure of retail)
1 pair Polk RTFX bipole/dipole, $50 (not sure)
1 pair Klipsch KSF10.5, $80 (around $600 I think)

A full surround set of the Acoustic Research Hi-Res series from the late 90's including
1 pair AR5 towers (retail $1800)
1 pair AR15 bookshelves (retail $500)
1 AR2C Center channel (retail $600)
1 ARPR1010 Sub (not sure)
All for $200. That's probably my sickest purchase to date.

I also picked up a Yamaha RX-570 stereo receiver for $25 and an HK330 for $250.

WHERE WHERE !!!..I want I want....could this still be available??
Everything was on craigslist except for the HK330, which was on eBay. Open box, but brand new, plastic still on. Guy just never had time to set it up. *shrugs*

I should mention that everything I've bought looks brand new. I should also mention that my roommates are planning on having me committed because I've filled our apartment with speakers.

Purchased a Butler 5150 amp for $1,895 from a certified dealer as a demo unit. The amp had been in a showroom rack and used sparingly. Dealer also threw in an upgraded power cord and free shipping!

Here are my audio deals:

Advent H500 towers, got them for $59 each, original cost was $299
Advent H200 bookshelfs, got them for $69 a pair, original cost: $199
Advent H100 bookshelfs, got them for $49 a pair, original cost: ~$199
Advent Heritage Center, got for $24, original cost: $149
Total cost for 7.0 setup above: $276.25

SVS PB10-NSD, got if for $399 b-stock (still looks new and they replaced the amplifier for free cause the auto/on switch was damaged in shipping).

Onkyo HT-S780, got it for $350 refurbished, sold the speakers for $159 so for for $190, I got a receiver at least as good as the Onkyo 503, with maybe more power.

So my total cost for this setup was $865.25 but had I paid full retail for it, I would have spent $1914 so I paid roughly 45% of original MSRP!!! A $2000 setup for under $900 aint bad in my book.

One more to add is the Panasonic AE900u which when I bought it, still listed for $2299 (bought it in Feb06) and I got it for $1995 - $400 mail in rebate and a $300 blockbuster rental card, so total cost including the rental card put me around $1295 or $1595 excluding the blockbuster card(though to be fair, most everyone got a deal similar to this and you can get it even cheaper now).

I also picked up the Logitech Z-5500 for $206 new in box Dec of 2005 which is still less than I can find it new.

Did you mention that you that you can turn around and sell most (if not all) of them for a decent profit?

Says a lot about the desireability of the PB10 that saving less than a hundred bucks is considered a great deal!

Sure does. I was about to order the Bic H100, still a good sub, but chanced one last glance at the b-stock page at svsound.com and just my luck (or my wallet's bad luck), they had one and that tipped the tide. You'd have to surf every only auction or resell site to find a used one for only a little less than that.

Free is always nice!

Since posting this, I picked up a free Yamaha receiver from craigslist that I use for my pc sound now.

Schadenfreude, who is your qoute from? I never equated fascism with pacifism. Fascism is the merging of corporations and government and a strange brand of nationalism. The term Fascism seems to be taken way out of context these days.

I looked it up, was quite suprised it was George Orwell. Thats interesting. Orwell was talking about Hitler an Mussolini and if you don`t stand up to them, they will crush you.

Context is always helpful.

The consolidation of the religious right and the political right is bringing this country dangerously close to a condition of fascism. There are active efforts to violate the constitution by eliminating the separation of church and state (especially in the schools.)

My best audio deal was a Carver CM-1090 for free. (MSRP $800 when you could still buy one.)

It's always funny to me that the people who seem scared to death of our religious conservatives and wish to confront them at every chance seem to be the same people who want to play "can't we all just get along" with Islamic Fundamentalists.
When Christian Conservatives start flying airplanes into buildings and sending suicide bombers into cafes, then I'll worry. In the mean time I think confronting the real physical threat is a more immediate concern.

I used the Orwell quote because it confuses then pisses off quasi-intelectual one-worlder types when they find out who said it.

Orwell got the date wrong, but he got a frightening number of the concepts right. Today's America is much closer to "1984" than it was in 1984.

And those of us who are equally opposed to both as well the far left animal/environment rights groups PETA/ELF etc?

Some awesome deals here. My best deal was buying the Velodyne VX-10 subwoofer for 60 bucks off craigslist. It was only used for a year and in excellent condition (not a scratch or anything on it).
